I was also waiting for you to react to that Megan Thee Stallion dissing Nicki Minaj. Now for Important context to this rap beef and how it started, was simply Nicki Minaj being JEALOUS AF about Megan Thee Stallion getting a bit more popular, meanwhile Nicki Minaj. So for 3 plus years Nicki was constantly cyber bullying Megan during Megan's work on her album Cobra. So finally Megan released a track which IMO it's technically not a super aggressive diss track because there are subtle shots fired at Nicki Minaj, but also her entire family and ex boyfriend, and EVEN DRAKE is getting some subs at them. I especially will look forward to when you hear Megan drop that bar at Nicki Minaj, because after that one bar Nicki was spazzing on Twitter like a trigger BITCH, like she can't handle when pettiness is thrown back at her!🤣

Its' simple. He likes Ren, he just really doesn't want to like him. It's comical.

The song was suppose to be haunting, it's about his friend who jumped off The Menai Bridge late one night when Ren was a younger man. Ren was the first to reach the bridge after a mutual friend alerted him to something going on. Ren was just a few moments too late to an empty bridge where his best friend had been. They never recovered the body. Listen again and you will get a different feel from it. Thanks for giving it an open minded listen.

They are not singing in octaves, but in thirds and diminished fourths, which gives it this erie and haunting vibe. And they are both doing a very good job, especially as this is a live performance. I think the musical expression is totally on point.

Yeah it's only like every fourth note matches or something like that So there's like some like weaving in and out of tune but you know the notes are Just mathematically not going to match up when they are purposely anti-syncrocity if that's even a word

Eugene, Ren did write this song as well as all of them unless it's a retake. As far as the vocals go, and I say this as a singer, they're not off key, it's a stylized choice. You may not like the sound or style and that's fine. I've watched a lot of reactions to this, particularly from singers & vocal coaches, etc. I haven't heard vocal criticism on that tune or Chalk Outlines. Both are done live, one shot. These are not reactors who pander. I know one of those when I see one. No hate here. I still watch your Ren Dotta reaction every once in a while, cracks me up.

She is off key. She's missing the harmony in several parts by a half step. Maybe it's stylized, maybe it isn't, but it's my job to know, hear, and correct these things. Harmonic minors are tough to duo, and many times when it's not noticeable, it's her simply octaving which can also be jarring in a duo, burying one singer or the other. It's not terrible here, but it's completely noticeable.

@@x8jason8x Maybe you're talking about _instrumental_ pitches. In singing there can (should!) be a quarter-step difference between omophones like -say- G sharp and A flat. And this is especially important in minor key melodies, more so in interwined 2-voice harmonized melodies. Not every singer is able to manage this quarter-step subtelty. But when two (or more) singers do manage to, it shines (esp in rehearsals a cappella). We call it "intervals' _fragrance_", as opposed to mere perfect-pitch intervals that sound correct but "dry". Anyway, her FIRST slide definitely went too high. She noticed it and corrected in the second slide.

It’s don’t matter what your criticisms-all I ever hear is “Michelle show can clean that shit up” and like Pokémon but with dreads.

Not really super talented, but this was pretty good. I've heard enough of his stuff to agree with experimental though. He pretty much is a throw every basic formula he can artist. Not exceedingly great at writing great music, but he panders to his audience like a pro, and has work ethic... which is all you need to succeed in the pop zeitgeist currently. He reminds me of Kurt Cobain in a way. Not exceedingly talented, but sometimes you don't need to be. Sometimes you just need to be relatable.

Hi Ren is deep. Eugene needs to check out the trilogy of Jenny and Screech. The story telling will trip you out. It's about 13 minutes, but it like a play, just like Hi Ren

I do agree, ChinChilla was hitting them octaves a bit higher than Ren. Song was kinda meh for me.

This is called dissonant chords . It’s intentional to create an awkward anxiety to the song. These aren’t typical harmonies. Ren is a master at creating this tension. It sounds out of tune but it’s intentional. Like creepy.

The part you are confused on is not wrong. In music theory lets take a simple chold like C major. C major is made up of 3 notes..C, E, G. Now let's say Ren is singing C and Chinchilla is singing say in E or G. Even though they are singing different notes, they are still singing within the structure C major. This is an extremely basic explanation and there are endless possibilties withen music to create a certain type of feel/mood. It's very much intentional.

I don't know if the half step off was intentional for some weird attempt at dissonance, or she just missed, but it happened several times. It's not bad overall musically at all, especially for Ren tracks, but holy crap does it give cringe over 9000 as a video. This one-take thing just doesn't do it justice imo.

@@x8jason8x I watched some videos from Chris Liepe who is a vocal coach for a lot of the big name artists and he and REN even face timed during some vocal breakdowns of some of his songs. He did vocal breakdowns of this song here as well as many other REN songs. He suggested that where the beginning sounded "off" was very much deliberate in creating an "uneasiness feel" to mirror something of an uneasiness nature would later be revealed in the song. At the end of the day, I guess we'll never actually know with absolute certainty.

So, in music theory, we have something called dissonance. To dumb it down, it’s basically when artists do something that doesn’t sound or feel right. It’s actually done intentionally because it makes the listener feel on edge. Like you did. You kept saying it didn’t sound “right” in certain points of the song. Here’s why they chose to do it. Yes, it sounds “off” or “wrong” but it makes the impact of things sounding “right” more powerful. I know you’re a hater by trade, and that’s cool. I just didn’t want you to think it was a “mistake” it was done intentionally. It’s just another way to create tension in music. It’s not everyone’s thing, but I’m pretty sure Ren and Chinchilla don’t give a fuck.
