Paul Merson says he is "shocked" that Xabi Alonso has committed his future to Bayer Leverkusen and "hopes he doesn't regret" his decision to stay at the Bundesliga leaders.
Alonso had been touted by many as a replacement for Klopp, who is leaving Anfield at the end of the season, though Liverpool were already not expected to include their former midfielder on their shortlist of possible successors.
Bayern Munich meanwhile, were also understood to be keen to appoint their former player as a replacement for the departing Thomas Tuchel

Yes and either way the media wins. Only the manager loses. If he left early, came to the Premiership and was a disappointment… The newspapers have their story on him being out of his depth. If he wins then he’s the new darling. As you say for his own career it’s best not to take too big a jump.

Talk is cheap ,and you don't get second chances with gods team ,that ship has sailed.
One word - SMART. You don't just happen to play in legendary Madrid and Bayern teams and win trophies, while working under two of the best managers (Jose and Pep) by fluke. He has lived different cultures and speaks different languages. Alonso is intelligent, articulate, and knows EXACTLY what he's doing. He will manage in the Champions League next season, where no one is expecting Leverkeusen to pull up any trees. If they do well again in the Bundesliga, he'll get credit. But if they don't, it'll be attributed to their European exertions, players being bought by other clubs, etc. He will not be faulted and his reputation will remain intact. He will also be seen as someone that is loyal and does not abandon projects at the first sight of a better opportunity. That's a win-win-win scenario if I ever saw one. Contrast that with going to Pool, where Klopp's shadow looms large. Let someone else step in and fail there. Also, why go to Bayern, where it's a circus? Even adding the best striker and defender in Europe - Kane and Kim - they could not win anything. They have deep-rooted problems that need sorting out. Instead, Alonso can just stay put at Leverkeusen and bide his time until Ancelotti leaves Madrid in 2026, and then he can go take over Los Blancos where he will manage Vinicius, Bellingham, and M'Bappe - all potential Ballon D'or winners!

This is the best decision I have ever seen a football manager taken, managers explode to scene with a lesser club then comes the huge hyping and appetite sapping offers from the big clubs and they jump onto it and get sacked after 6 months and their becomes lost in history, kudos Alonso "this man would go far"
I respect it, he’s committed to his own project he started, I mean look at some of the players he has at his disposal there. With a few more additions the team has a looking scary, a lot of world class potential talent there.

Why would he ever come to England right now??? 🤦🏻♂️ Liverpool will come back knocking if he’s ever available after his time in Germany. There’s so many teams outside the premier league that are worth more and a greater challenge
If Merson followed the story around Alonso more closely, he'd know he was likely to stay at Leverkusen even before the decision was made.

If you are a manager and your job is in Munich or Liverpool you have the best players the best management the best stadiums the best pr what else can you expect that winning a championship? Woud the focus have been on Alonso if he was Munich coach or is the interesting part that he does it with a club that has never won the league title?
In a way it is utterly logic isn't it ? He is doing so well with this squad, they play entertaining football and these players give their absolute best for him. And don't forget that this is the first season he is being pointed out by the whole football community. Xabi Alonso is indeed very smart and knows that you don't say yes to such big football clubs (Bayern and Liverpool) after 1 very good season.
The English can't believe they haven't had their way... crazy how in any other situation they'd say he's too inexperienced to manage such a big club, but just bcaz their desperate they scrape the bottom of the barrel for a piece they'd otherwise have shunned... smh

I don’t think that he will regret, because RM will come for him. He wants bigger club than Liverpool.
Xavi Alonso is aware that Florentino Perez is actively working on securing his future with the team, having a contract ready for him whenever he is prepared to take on a significant role. If Liverpool and Bayern fail to recruit Alonso this year, he will certainly join Real Madrid.
Smart move from Alonso. You never want to be the man replacing THE man. Look at Moyes at United, Emery at Arsenal, Rafa at Inter. The list goes on
I love that from Alonso, i'm pretty sure they will challenge Bayern next year again and will be successful in the CL. We all know what happend to so many topcoaches who weren't successfull, they're forgotten now and then the media says "it was too soon". I think this is a smart move from Alonso.
Cutting Sue Off in mid sentence what a bunch of clowns
Everything that glitters is not gold.
People like Paul Merson are the exact reason why everyone outside of England hates English football, the entitlement combined with total cluelessness is crazy.
The same way these pundits sat here and said Arsenal and Arteta overachieved last season and cannot do it again this season. Even tipping spurs and utd to be in better positions and contend for the title over Arsenal. Now saying next season Bayern could be 20pts clear. Does that Alonso team look like they are playing and winning on luck? That's a well set up structure
Paul Merson is the same guy that said Liverpool should replace Salah with Saka. That should tell you everything you need to know!
Well done Alonso. If your career aint broke dont fix it. Merson can be an absolute wally at times, hes definitely a GRASS
hes a young manager, developing his craft
better off having one person talking at a time people shouting over the top of the others is nuts
No he shouldn't be regrating it since that might have hade a lit pressure where he might fail to never return like Gary navil
Where is it written that Alonso is destined to coach any of his previous clubs as a player??? So, it will be a sacrilege if he coaches Barcelona or Man Utd. Or even Inter Milan.
Xavi Alonso is very clever staying at Leverkusen
Give the man a chance with Leverkusen in the champions league.
What you mean regret this????? he can still get a big job when he’s ready, he’s just developing and gaining more experience at leverkusen
I think turning down Bayern may be the regret not Liverpool. At Liverpool he’ll be expected to compete with City while Liverpool are reluctant to spend the funds to acquire top quality players. Why take on that unnecessary pressure? If anyone deserves unlimited funds it’s Klopp because of what he’s accomplished with almost half the money that City have spent, but the owners are still stingy. Alonso is better off where he’s loved and will be a legend 4 years. Remember he’s already made good money in his playing career, it’s not about that 4 him. Klopp wld have won way more trophies if he had been sufficiently backed in the transfer market.
Does he think this is going to be another Leicester - Claudio Ranieri situation?
I think is the perfect time to stay another season. The team would have more expirence and Munchen will have a new manager that needs time
I can understand it TBH and to some extent it’s refreshing to see a manager not jump too soon. Still the league and europa to challenge for. He’s a young manager, will qualify for next season’s CL. Following Klopp won’t be easy, and going straight from Leverkeusen to Bayern in the same league etc would feel odd
As a Liverpool supporter I’m used to these types of disappointments. Wanting someone and chasing them, courting them, chatting to everyone only to end up with someone else who does a great job anyway so onwards and upwards. Let’s get Ruben in and new contracts sorted asap
Why will Bayern be 20 points ckear next season? Ask Merse to tell ys why and he wont be able to tell you
Let'S be real, England doesn't have any teams in the semi final of the champions league and their only successful club (Liverpool) owes most of this success to their german coach Klopp and even they will probably not be able to move on to the semi finals after their 0-3 loss vs Bergamo. All these english clubs spent billions supplied by russian oligarchs, middle eastern kings or american investment firms and yet they don't succeed. Xabi Alonso did very well to stay in Leverkusen, he has so many years left as a coach, why should he rush it now? Let him do his thing, he probably knows better then anyone else what's good for him.
He knows what he is doing. Getting experience and has security there. Why jump ship when they are top at the moment
the problem is he might decide to stay at Leverkusen but the players! some of them will get offers from other clubs and wont hesitate
These jobs come up once in blue moon?? Bayern change manager ALL the time and next Liverpool manger will be lucky to last 2 seasons after Klopp. Why would he leave Leverkusen? He's doing amazing for them and is showing loyalty and class. Fair play to him.
Cleaver move by Alonso there's no hurry

In fact after 07-08 season Benitez regarded Alonso highly so it was a Iame excuse on behalf of Alonso to use what happened in 06 as an excuse for his exit.
I really dont understand why Paul thinks Alonso would have any regrets at this point in time, as a young upcoming manager he needs to see this season out first of all before making other plans winning the German league and cup if they can even the europa league , they don't need to be start thinking 💭 about there manager leaving at this point of the season. Good luck Alonso I want you to win
You're wrong! Staying at Leverkusen is a good idea! Next season is going to be in champion league with the same time, if he has guaranteed that some players are going to sign and stay. Lock at Gerrard, where is he?
As a Liverpool fan I respect Alonso's decision. He's being loyal to Leverkusen and he's building something there he hasn't yet finished. Whether he feels that the Liverpool job is too big for him right now only he knows that. We move on and must trust the Liverpool board to do what they did in 2015, to find a top class manager who gets Liverpool as a club and is progressive in his thinking. I trust we will have the right manager for the club when Klopp leaves. Our fans need to be patient and have some faith.
I don't know why but personally I don't like having like a "club legend" manage the team, also the hype was too much I had always preferred we didn't get Alonso. I have always wanted Liverpool to get someone like Nagelsman instead. When I heard alonso wasn't coming, I was like "ok".
These guy's are unable to see someone else's opinion. It was fairly obvious to me he would stay. The Premier League IS the best League, but it's not the only top League, let's not live in a bubble. Why would Xabi leave after the amazing job he's done and foundation he's created. He's a young manager and has years ahead of him, there's absolutely no rush to be jumping ship the first time another top European club looks at you, if he backs his ability, plenty of those opportunities will be there for him when he's ready. Maybe he prefers to wait for Madrid even, who knows ?
This Merson guy.. what the hell is he talking about regret for?? Dude ! 😅😂 The guy has made a decision and he's got his reasons for that you probably are not privy to.. Why would you make it look like he's made a mistake for turning down the Liverpool job? C'mon!
Ah here we go again with the entitled Premier League supremacists.
Alonso (as well Grimaldo) should be already granted by RM
So if they never come again..does the world end? I respect Xabi's decision, it shows that he is a real and & decisive man, not driven at the moment by the clout....I lift my hats off to you Mr. Alonso.
Regret what?? I'm a barca fan, and i can tell you this man is going to madrid once Carlo contract ends. Even Stevie Wonder can see that
Someone who wants to build something and him being "shocked" just shows what`s wrong in football. It`s not all about money and leaving just because a big club is calling. Loyalty is something that`s rare these days, and Alonso should be applauded for that decision.
Can’t blame him for staying a leverkusen he’s done a great job there and he’s repaying the trust leverkusen put in him when they gave him his big break in management, he could build a really special team at leverkusen I reckon
Good decision from Xabi, like he said, he's still young so he's learning and getting experience.
This clip will age tremendously when he signs for Madrid in 2 years from now
He's made the right decision and he's not going to regret it,just as he made the decision to start coaching he did it alone and he has made this decision alone again and its the best decision at the moment
Massively disagree here with Merson. I don't think this is "once in a blue moon" moment. I believe Liverpool will respect his decision and believe that he has made a decision for the best of the short and long-term. If Alonso continues to be a successful manager then Liverpool will look at him again in the future when the time is right and at that time, then it will be the right moment for him to take the job. From here until that moment, Xabi will continue to develop as a manager and coach and will have hopefully, further experience. Xabi is in a great place right now and has only been with Leverkusen a short space of time. The respect to him for staying with them and staying in a position where he can continue to test himself and hopefully do the best for the club. Xabi may have also considered a job too soon like Lampard and Chelsea and has considered his position a good one. Right now to be at Leverkusen, to have had Liverpool and Bayern interest after his first senior managerial role, he has a good future ahead of him. So I believe Merson is totally wrong here.
Non of these pundits are managers or owners of a club. There voice does of non investing pundits are there view only. A good, level headed choice by Xabi. These jobs will come again. Stop your procrastination and non patient reaction.
Merson knows nothing, 42 years old, three years in management, he'll come one day, he's still unbeaten, lets see if he show if he can do it in the champions league, lot still to prove.
I'm sure he appreciates your concern.
Great, smart decision.
how is this a mistake. liverpool could fall drastically and he gets sacked after a few months, rather stay where you are undefeated
Liverpool is certainly not the hardest job in the world, that's not true... Paul Merson... Real Madrid is by far harder to coach than Liverpool, that's a fact.... And it doesn't matter which job Xavi Alonzo is after, it remains his choice so deal with it and move on.....
Xabi Alonso obviously thought long and hard about his decision and to be honest you have to commend him for that. He will know himself that this could either make him or break him and no matter what decision he made, it would be a gamble. People are saying that he should have taken the opportunity because it may never come back around, but the guy has literally only just started his managerial career. It doesn't have to be Liverpool, it doesn't have to be Bayern... Plus when Klopp leaves, chances are several managers will flop, so in saying that, chances are the Liverpool job will come back around again anyway. Same with Bayern, the club expects more than just winning the league because it dominates its country so much, so no manager is safe there, which in turn means the job will come around again.
