I actually like a lot of Big Generator; it more or less bypasses Trevor Rabin's hair-metal tendencies, and the man himself does allow some more classic Yes idiom to appear than 90125, not least in the production (famously abandoned by Trevor Horn). I'm Running is a good example: despite the shock of its pseudo-Caribbean flavours and duck-quacks, there are some lovely keyboard textures (not sure if Trevor or Tony), Alan's high-tuned snare, a glorious use of Dorian mode in the verses - Jon sounds fantastic, and the wall-of-vocals just gets more and more ebullient and thrilling.
!!TWO 5-string basses alert!! - the main featured bass has the B-string tuned down to A, and the second bass is tuned A-D-G-D-F. While the second bass is essentially doubling the first an octave below, there are one or two places where it does a tiny something different, so I decided to include it in the score.
Bar 110 (02:50 - and other recaps) - despite dotted crotchets the overall crotchet feel of the piece makes 3/4 seem the right choice to me
Bar 145 (03:50) - Miguel is playing this (as I'm sure Chris did) with the barest tap of a thumb-knuckle. When the sound is SO low and the bottom string potentially very slack, it is, I think, a testament to Chris's ability to know exactly what works in what contexts.
Bar 229 (05:41) lower octaves in bass 1 just the first time through
Bar 262 (06:44) - time signature LOL
Bar 279 (07:07) - for once I'm going to second-guess Miguel, who doesn't seem to be playing the 12/8 rhythm that echoes the 21/8 of earlier (Trevor certainly is), but I'm pretty sure it's there in the original
