Yes in the books Blackfish was a great fighter with a rich life history. He was good enough to be a Kingsguard. It is like Areo Hotah who was Bodyguard to Doran Martell. He was also one of the greatest fighters in Westeros that we never saw fight. He was stabbed in the back by a sand snake.

I love how Jamie just assumed that blackfish would still be alive waiting to take on more. He knew blackfish was a beast and I think more than anything he wanted to look him in the eyes and say this war is over.

@@Mercurial. The Blackfish was a veteran of the War Of The Ninepenny Kings, and Jaime was obsessed with wanting to know about his experiences since he was a great warrior. Jaime was even meant to be betrothed to Lysa Tully, but he never even spoke to her since he was so fixated talking to the Blackfish.

Funnily enough if I recall, in the books the Blackfish was captured by the Freys after the red wedding. One night under a new moon he escaped his cell and jumped into the river, some guards heard a splash in the darkness, thinking it was just a simple fish, that night the Blackfish swam miles and miles down river. By the time the sun rose, there wasn’t a snowballs chance in hell the Freys could catch him again.

FUN STORY. When Jaime was first knighted, his father sent him to Riverrun to Holster Tully to deliver a letter containing a business proposal or something. Holster Tully said he needed to consider his answer, so Jaime stayed as a guest. This was actually for him to meet and get to know Lysa Tully who was sat next to him every meal as their father's were in negotiations for them to marry. Lysa who later murdered her husband. But Lysa was shy and couldn't talk and Jaime was preoccupied talking to Brynden Tully the legendary Blackfish about his battles and adventures. Later Jaime joined the Kingsguard and all their plans came to nothing.

It’s interesting the amount of different marriage alliances in that era. Brandon was to marry Catelyn Tully, Jaime was being set up to marry Lysa, Lyanna marry Robert, Ned was being set up to marry Ashara Dayne. Almost as if there was a drive in that era to bind the paramount houses together then extend their reach.

@@Phantom19913 Yes a lot of people have theories about this. They think the maester are pushing these alliances to bind the houses closer together. They see maesters as having all kinds of agendas to change and influence things. The are advisors and healers and they teach the young, so they can push views on the houses. But who knows in medieval times making alliances through marriage was a regular thing.

@@movieloverfan18 actually marriage is still treated as a means of alliance in some parts of the world. While not as common in the west, some nations in Africa and Middle East are still prevalent. Targaryen dynasty was in full decline in this era and the great houses may have been preparing for its end.

A lot of these alliances also stem from the War of Nine Penny Kings, which was where Brynden made his name. And Tywin knighted then-Prince Aerys and Robert Baratheons Father, cause they became friends there. And Robert's dad, Ned's dad and Jon Arryn all became close during the fighting. It's mentioned briefly in the books, but Ned and Robert weren't the only fosters. Jon Arryn had his only son in Winterfell coming up with Brandon Stark. The whole older generation made their name and connections in this war pre Game of Thrones, which extended into the rebellion and beyond. Kinda wild to imagine the scope of this

I agree but to be fair to D and D they agreed to ADAPT the books, not to make up half the show on their own. If the author is taking 13 years and still has no idea on how to end the show in a satisfying matter, why should we be angry with D and D? Especially since GRRM promised to finish the books before D and D started writing season 5/6. There’s too many characters and this story is just too complicated.

I just got done watching the movie: The 13th warrior. Black fish was also in that film and funny thing is that he died the same way in game of thrones. Like exactly shot for shot on screen. Lol

Blackfish was one of my favourite characters, and then he was written off so badly. What an unsatisfying ending.

Fun fact about Clive and this scene. His character stayed back and sacrificed himself, to give people time to escape. The same scene he did in 13th Warrior.

Dude just have him leave with Brienne then separate from her when they reach the Neck to say hes going to visit an old friend and he goes to fetch Howland Reed and Meera who then would show up before the battle of winterfell and set up a scene between Jon and Howland about his true parentage. Then Blackfish dies at battle of Wintefell. Meera stays by Brans side after that. Adds maybe 15 minutes of screen times and resolves like 5 abandoned plots.

He was the brother of the previous lord of the riverlands, uncle to Cat Tully and probably patriarch to a Tully cadet branch, as I believe he had a keep of his own

Catelyn Starks Uncle. Her dad's brother. He became Lord of Riverrun in Edmures absence when he was held hostage by the Freys at the Red Wedding. From which he himself escaped in the show but never attended in the books.

Whoever designed the armour on game of thrones needs sacked like. Should have stuck to the wars of the roses theme instead of making them all look like something out of battle star galactica

This whole scene doesn’t make justice to the books but you can’t blame it on the show as must of the dilemma goes in Jaime’s head and his struggle to go against his oath made to Cathelyn while honoring his family and having to confront his childhood hero who only throws insults at him

Descretion... People need to understand that you need to know when and how to walk away AND fight another day
