    One thing that I love is that you go to talk to Hraesvelgr fairly early, and Alphinaud is like, "Can't we move on from the past?" And Hraesvelgr responds with something like, "For you, these things are distant history, but they happened TO ME." This and the anachronistic way of speaking really drive home how ANCIENT they are in a way that games very seldom do. Like, pretty much everyone you meet in Shadowlands is hundreds or even thousands of years old, but they don't FEEL old. Denathrius might be the closest they come to this, but he still doesn't feel like he's a living part of history like Hraesvelgr or Nidhogg.

We're given so many of these moments, truly emotionally driven moments that have caused many of us to become more emotionally developed, and we all SHARE these things. @JuliSoli XII is great. Its only major flaw were Vaan and Penelo being part of the main cast. XIII Trilogy however. Well, let us just say. The concept was great but the execution was horrible. As for XV, the Royal Edition finally did that game's lore justice.

  • @lorenzolyleabadia1669

    @lorenzolyleabadia1669

    2 жыл бұрын

    @JuliSoli Well, story wise that was the minor flaw with FFXII's story. Act 1 and Act 2 were so well structured and the pacing was great but with the last Act (Act 3), the story went a bit fast all so sudden. Overall though, it was still great nonetheless. Yep. The Royal Edition is with all the DLCs. Well, apart from Ardyn's backstory since that came out after Royal Edition. Although, even without the Ardyn DLC, the full experience of the Royal Edition is good enough on its own. The purpose of Ardyn's DLC is to make us sympathise with him more but personally, even without it. He was still a compelling villian where in the end, he actually got what he wanted.

  • @InvictusRed1911

    @InvictusRed1911

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@lorenzolyleabadia1669 the real tragedy of XV is that the world building is decent and.. fuck "whatever his face is" has the potential to be a truly tragic villain, but the way they needed a million different cross-media tie-ins to explain the story as opposed to just including it in the core game (and the adamant approach to never stray from Noctis' POV) made it feel "empty" as a mainline FF. I say this all to add that I am VERY happy that Yoshi-P is taking the helm on FFXVI.

  • @lorenzolyleabadia1669

    @lorenzolyleabadia1669

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@InvictusRed1911 Without having to rely on the other media, the story can hold on its own. Ardyn did became a tragic villian with the last DLC of the game. The flaws of XV was, they didn't had the time to establish Lunafreya as a character. Sure, her selfless journey to awaken the Astrals whilst knowing the risk for her well being is quite noble of her and the addtional scenes that they added made us see her personal struggles towards all of it but sadly, it wasn't enough. If there was a chapter or two that was focused on her, then Noctis' journey would've been more gut wrenching that it already is. Another flaw was to make the other characters story arcs a DLC. I don't blame the director though, since he was given a strict deadline for a project that wasn't even his to begin with but somehow, he made it work. The other story arcs would've have been included on the original release but hey, a deadline is a deadline. As for the Noctis POV, that was the feeling initially but the Royal Edition fixed all of that. XV wasn't perfect but it did revived the mainline franchise's popularity after the tragedy of the XIII Trilogy. It was solid 8 out of 10 for me

    I usually don't like villains that are nothing more than angry rage demons, but holy shit was Nidhogg was so beautifully written, especially in post patches. There's something about writing Nidhogg to be a monster can't be saved, only put to rest, that was done so well. I hated Nidhogg, but the more we learned about him the more I felt pity. He was literally consumed by his anger, and Estinien was going down the exact same route. When Nidhogg finally dies and that beautiful soul ascends before dissipating into aether, all I could think was "rest in peace brother". And then for Estinien to later explain how he and Nidhogg have a connection, and to recognize their shared dichotomy, that broke me. This also starts the trend of 14 villains being beyond top tier.

    The biggest difference I can recall between WoW and FFXIV storytelling is that in WoW, you are...basically treated as a mook? A soldier. The guy who gets asked to do random tasks while the Named NPCs get all the hero moments and all the glory. In FFXIV *you are the hero.* This story is *yours.* *You* triumph against Ifrit, Titan, and Garuda. *You* defeat the Ultimate Weapon. *You* befriend Haurchefant. Harchefant literally hero-worships *You* because of *your* achievements and selflessness. FFXIV understands that the story in their game is *your* story, and acts accordingly.

    @@bitter_gourd you know, whenever I look at genshin's archon quest, I can't help but feel like they actually wanted to adapt some story elements of FF XIV for their own. Its like "Look, FF XIV Heavensward has good story about dragons. Lets make a story of a dragon of our own." The result is Dvalin, lol. And the battle against Dvalin really reminds me of Hraesvelgr's trial, jumping from one platform to another. Liyue is mostly original bcus this is where they want to introduce Chinese culture to the world, but the beginning of the archon quest, Rex Lapis fake death, really reminds me of Nanamo's fake death. And how the traveler became a suspect, too. And Inazuma 2.1 that you're talking about, has a little of Stormblood story element (which I can't say here in case Pyro reading the comments), but you know what I'm talking about. The problem is, it seems like they intentionally wanted to adapt that story element of Stormblood, but still hesitate to make Inazuma story become darker, bcus of genshin's rating. While FF XIV story is targeted for older and mature audience, but thats not the case for genshin. Thats one reason where their storytelling problem came from, imo

  • @bitter_gourd

    @bitter_gourd

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@fahriza88 I think I disagree. A lot of these elements are pretty typical story tropes so I don't feel like Genshin specifically looked and FFXIV and decided to pull from it. A lot of stories start out with Great Big Lizard that Everyone is Scared Of because it's an easy hook and entry point to a story (I also felt Dvalin's fight was more modeled after Nier Automata instead of Hraesvelgr's trial). I personally thought that the Liyue arc was pretty original and it was a good balance between highlighting Chinese culture while still keeping a good storyline. Re: Inazuma, from my perspective I felt that the writers were taking a specific point in history (Japan being a closed off country for many years) but taking a look at it from a different perspective (from within the country and its nearby neighbours without a Western-centric perspective of "we have to open the country"). The problem with the Inazuma storyline is they did absolutely nothing with its potential. :/ The resistance in Genshin is a joke and basically had absolutely no impact whatsoever on pretty much anything in the story. I totally agree with you on them being unwilling to commit to a darker storyline though. I do think the rating is a problem, but another issue is that they are introducing characters with the intention to make money off of them, which is a hole they dug for themselves. For example, if Raiden Shogun was a straight-out villain for a majority of the Inazuma arc and was redeemed later, they would either have to push her banner all the way to the end or risk people not rolling for her because she was "the enemy". Another thing that's problematic for Genshin's storytelling is that the players naturally assume that most (if not all) characters will eventually become playable, which means that everyone is likely to get a redemption arc sooner or later. I think because they're playing to the numbers instead of what makes sense for their story, we end up with characters that are rushed through their development and/or totally basic. FF on the other hand, is not afraid to make characters unlikeable so we can see the slow burn of their development (like Alphinaud and a few other SB/SHB characters I can think of).

  • @bitter_gourd

    @@fahriza88 Yeah, it totally could have happened and we'd never know haha. Definitely not saying you're wrong, and it's totally cool to have different opinions! Having a faction called "the Resistance" is very, very common. I wouldn't really allude that to anything. For example, Star Wars is another franchise which has a faction of rebels simply called the Resistance. Definitely agree with that one KZreadr who said that a lot of the 2.1 events are told, not shown, and that's exacerbated by a serious pacing problem, which means that all the emotional notes they tried to hit fell completely flat. The Resistance makes sense in the Genshin context with them opposing the Vision Hunt Decree, but they're basically just sidelined completely, which makes them, like you said, completely pointless and without purpose. What's more interesting to me is that the Resistance is also partially born out of long-standing bad blood between Watatsumi Island and the Shogunate, but once again, they don't go into that and nobody faces any consequences for their actions sooooo... waste of potential. :/

In this case it is mostly to do with art-style, lalafel (as seen from the outside) and the fact it is japanese, as well as certain moments (like power of friendship scene after praetorium being an example) being well known tropes often seen in Japanese media, especially manga and anime. (because as is well know, there are no tropes that keep gong on repeat in western media. They're quite short and self-contained but they really add to your impact as the Warrior of Light on the lives of the normal Ishgardians/extra consequences from the Dragonsong War. Those extras are always really cool. Also find the quest from one of the servants within Fortemps Manor called "The Paths We Walk" if you haven't done it already! It takes you through the journey you've made so far in a really interesting way. It was a privilege to watch you experience this live. This game has done a lot of wonderful things, and chief among them is that it finds a way to remind us that it is okay to open ourselves to others, to be vulnerable, and to earnestly care about things. It's hard to tell stories about these things because it's hard to get people to buy in through the baseline cynicism of objective-based gaming. And the fact that they somehow managed to thread the needle and bring us all a story that makes us care means we're more likely to trust them the next time, and the next, and so forth. And that changes *us* at the same time. I've grown emotionally as I've played this game, and it's encouraged me to look at how I relate to others and to remember that vulnerability needn't mean weakness. Glad you're along for the ride, and I'm looking forward to the next hundred pages of notes!

    I haven’t seen this cutscene in a while, and it never fails to leave me teary eyed. People discount “weeb” Japanese games such as FF, but one thing I know for fact: Japanese people just KNOW how to make you feel attached to characters. If Western story telling is great in complex overarching plot; Japanese story telling dominates when it comes to character driven stories. I encourage you to play other JRPGs, or even tap into anime - because trust me. If you feel this way with FF14, there are other Japanese media out there that will leave you in tears. If you loved HWs, Shadowbringers is an absolute TREAT! One of the best final fantasy in recent times - if not, one of the best FF. Ever. Game literally left me in tears. Happy adventures in Eorzea!

    If you every need a good JRPG to start without all the deep complex combat or confusing side systems I'd recommend Yakuza 0. Solid emotional story and incredible endearing characters. I'm not sure it's a west vs Japan thing. There are certainly good examples of great character driven story in western media. And to compare FFXIV to WoW, I think FFXIV overarching plot is better too. However, I think with FFXIV the truth is that they took the story seriously-- partly because of its roots as a single player rpg. WoW and many other western video games do not take the story seriously. They don't give it the resources it needs and it's really just window dressing for the gameplay.

The minute we failed to contain the light, he wrote us off. I was just being intentionally vague for the purpose of spoilers.

    @@akkiko How far are you into the story for ShB? If you finished 5.3, read ahead, otherwise this is spoilers and I urge you to make a FULL STOP. I'd say ShB is very heartwrenching, but only if you knew the whole story about your friend who kept the truth from you. So Emet Selch actually saw you as the real you when you were his friend, unsundered form - Azem. This is implied throughout the ShB 5.0 storyline when he keeps on referring to you, especially the part that 'you won't remember any of this', but when he saw you and the similarities of your actions in your sundered form, it reminded him of his friend before the sundering. WoL - Azem - also did things similar to us and helped the people when traveling. In actuality, Emet always covered our backs when things went wrong. He even did so in present time - hence saving Ysh'tola. So remember, Emet has been toiling away - pretty much carrying the burden of the ancients alone - trying to bring them all back to life. In hindsight, he has been carrying all the ancient's hopes and dreams on his back for many *many years*. He was tired and sick of all of this but his goal was too heavy a burden to bear for anyone else. We can definitely see this from Ardbert mentioning how 'that is too great a burden to bear for any one individual alone.' When he saw you, he saw a glimpse of our soul - as we can tell from Hythlodaeus. There is no way Emet Selch never recognized us by the time we arrived at the First - and Ardbert was following us. Hythlodaeus basically implied we were both close friends. It's this exact connection that Emet approached us in the first place, even though he saw the WoL as like everyone else - not actually 'alive' in his eyes. From us, he thought of a separate plan. Provided we can contain the light... is a very nice way of putting he'd see he no longer has to continue his mission because the current beings have the capability to rival the ancients. After all, that was his initial intention - to see if the new beings are strong enough to be the new caretakers of this world. If not, he goes to bring back all the ancients. That means, he was willing to forsake every ancient or find a way forward with/without them assuming -we- are the sole person that met his expectation. To put it simply, everyone can't match the WoL lorewise. It goes to reason that everyone else would have failed to contain the light without exception if the WoL fails. Then as long as the WoL can meet the minimum expectation, everyone can be considered 'alive' & worth keeping because someone has demonstrated the potential of the sundered beings to do so. That's obviously not a fair and valid assumption to make... but Emet was willing to make this concession. Even so, it's us vs the whole world. If he can have both, that would be ideal, but he's also very realistic - after all he's been continuing his mission for centuries as one of the last sundered and watching the sundered forms' daily lives. If we fail to contain the light, then he has to also face reality and continue his plan to revive everyone as all his years alive leading up this point has conveyed him the cold truth: we just can't be considered alive because we have neither infinite lifespan and we cannot protect anything from to being too weak in comparison. If we can't contain the light, it's the same as saying we can't stop a calamity. For someone who have been through the Final Days, if another incident of the Final Days happen again, who can stop it? Clearly, no one would be fit as the "caretakers" of this world. Finally, by the end of 5.0, we learn from Ryne that... our soul went from nearly cracked to fully healed and stronger. By that point, Emet should have known we can contain the light. After all, we still did contain the light until we fired it off during the last cutscene. He even saw a reflection of us. But no... Emet... goes to say we end up fighting. Right at this point, we have passed all of Emet's concessions... but this is the case where he saw we actually had potential. So a couple things could have happened here: 1. Emet, believing we had the ability to contain the light wanted to truly test us. To test if we have the power to contend with the ancients - and thus revealed his true name to us - Hades. If we truly pass this test, he can consider the new beings having enough power to contend with any problems that the ancients could have. 2. Emet, realizing the light can be contained, our soul becoming denser, but nearly killed our primary soul, decided to act on his friend's behalf and put up a Charade to help him remove the light in a battle against Hades because the excess light could still end up being harmful to us. 3. His mission is fulfilled, and he no longer has the burden to continue with his mission - and thus can choose a method to remove the light within us and die, knowing we can carry on their legacy. From 5.3, we learn that Azem is actually supposed to be on the Convocation of the 14th. However, he doesn't get a seat because he opposed the Convocation's plans. That's mainly due to Azem's role - which is more of a traveler who interacts with the people instead of just sitting in the Convocation office and making laws/rules to help govern the world. Because of that, we were never supposed to get a specialized crystal. However, the crystal was made - in secret -, which implies Emet was fully aware of trusting us in case he ever falters. In other words, he's basically seeing us as a friend, though he doesn't actually tell us that because the WoL of this day and age is their own person - not Azem. Even if we were not full and yet whole unsundered being (which implies he already knew we don't have enough power against him), he already saw enough of 'Azem' in the WoL to have Hythlodaeus hand us that crystal (as stated Hythlodaeus can only act to what Emet would have wanted and within his means). That speaks volumes about his actions. From one hand, you can think of that as 'a failsafe to prevent Elidibus to continue carrying the burden he left behind' if he fails. On another hand, it also represents that Emet fully entrusted the future of the world to us and gave us our power to do so - the power to call our friends (aka Canonized Duty Finder). From the 5.3 SoS transition, both these cases happen as we learn the exact nature of the crystal. It allows us to call our friends for help. And guess what? Emet showed up in his ancient form to help us out in a pinch. Even though he's dead and gone. Even after being dead, he's still coming over and busting his ass to save us. These implied parts become a lot more clear if you read the Tales from the Shadow's Sidestories. They draw a new perspective in what Emet sees in Azem. Once you can make the connection of how Emet treats the WoL... well the rest is history.
