The problem with rock is that the sun heats it up and it can fry your plants quickly. Also, mulch breaks down and provides nutrients to the plants, rocks obviously don’t. Make sure you keep a close eye on your shrubs. Water them regularly and fertilize as needed.

People have mentioned that this is not maintenance free but it is low maintenance. On a yearly basis we spray our rocks and when the weeds die off and get really dry a quick pass with a propane “rosebud” and the debris is gone. It won’t harm the live plants if you keep it moving. Also, I was fully thinking one of the rounder rocks would scoot away from you and become a monument at the pond. LOL

You’re about the same as our kids and we do all we can to help them Out just like your parents do. Great looking results. And fyi mulch emits a scourge called artillery or shotgun fungus that shoots out about 20 feet and gets all over whatever is within its range. It will not pressure wash off nor even scratch off.

When you put in the stairs consider ptting in a ramp for wheelchairs, atv/ golf cart, wheeled coolers, trash cans etc.The ramp will be used more than you think. It could cross the stairs as a landing. Also will give access to the stones and plants. Ask your parents about mobility issues as people age. They are probably starting to see it in their contemporaries.

Retention walls with appropriate drainage, cleverly hidden by the boulders would last for generations. Also, the stairway could have become a part of the overall retention structure. I worry that you may be dealing with hydrostatic pressure and earth movement, with earth pushing behind, and then flowing over the large stones.

All those hours you've put in on that excavator really show, even if you rented an excavator for this project you wouldn't be able to put those boulders down with as much precision as you were doing it. And those rocks will only look better as it rains and washes some of the dirt off of them.

We picked out a few flowering ones. Spirea and weigelia but the lavender may do well there. Our hosta need some shade or they brown up… I don’t think they will do good as that slope gets beat with sun most of the day. We need plants that are very drought tolerant. It’s going to be a work in progress. 😊
