I’m Jack. This is Dustin. We talk trauma, family, relationships, jail, prison, spirituality & more.

This is my good friend Dustin. He has gone from being forced into a juvenile detention center to running a treatment facility/sober living program.
Wilderness programs, jails, prisons, drugs, alcohol and violence plagued his life.
Today, through lots of work, he holds a sobriety date and has a very strong belief in god. His words and experience matter. I hope you enjoy what you hear.

Your interviews so far have been really profound for me. As an older male, it is a new experience to see two men sit down and talk about REAL issues, feelings, fears, whatever it is. Men being honest and exposing their shame and their worst deeds. No excuses, no blaming others. It is too easy to hate someone for being selffish. Most people are selfish. We are programmed for self preservation. We learn early on how to manipulate to get what we want, but it's usually not what we really need. I would hope, everyone respects honesty. and that everyone respects love. Jack, thank you for doing this idea that you have. I would love to see you also interview men who are your mentors. Men who you think are setting a good example of how to deal with life's challenges. Not a perfect man but someone who has made more good choices than bad, someone who was delt a decent hand in life. It's good to have someone elses perspective once in a while. It's easy to get caugh up in one's own thoughts.

Dustin is a good man of God. I can tell God is using him through is words. He’s right, his job is to lead those men to God - and I loved him not taking credit and giving God the credit. I’ll keep Dustin in my prayers that The Lord gives him strength and perseverance. Having Dustin on again world be great, as well as maybe some video of the place/s he runs so we viewers can get a better understanding of what the place is like. Hello dear Jack, the interview with you and Dustin touched me very much. I also used to work with difficult-to-educate young people who came into contact with violence, abuse, drugs and all sorts of things. I really enjoyed the work back then, but the level of aggression and willingness to use violence was quite high despite the caring and loving care, which is why I only work in the consulting area. I think it's good when you find yourself, learn from the past and become a mature person with an authentic personality and have also found your way to God🙏 Find your conversation very valuable and important so that people who are or were in a similar situation learn from it that life goes on, you learn from it, forgive yourself and others and become a mature person who is in harmony with everything and who loves life🙏👍✌️

I was very privileged growing up with wealthy parents in West Los Angeles. I had everything I wanted. I also did everything in my power to skip school, do drugs, steal, shoplift (even though I had unlimited access to money)… I got bad grades and barely graduated from my private school. I betrayed friends, hit my mom, got a felony, etc. I was molested at 7 by my grandfather. I’m not using that as an excuse, but why did I go down the path I did? It wasn’t my friends: I was the worse person in my group. Moving to Hawaii and going back to school was the change I needed. Today, I can’t imagine behaving the way I did. I limit myself to two drink per day. I g hit get broke that rule in over 25 years. I don’t do drugs. I enjoy feeling I’m in control of myself. It took years to regain my parents trust.

Jack from this interview I find a very important point for the younger generation and everyone. That addiction doesn't have to be drugs and alcohol to put you in the wrong direction! At the age of 38 now I say how from a very young age you have to be "mind over body" not to fall to certain things even if they are nothing big. One have to have control over his actions from a young age, given certain responsibilities from a young age.. you mentioned computer games ect...and some parents leave their kids to shut their mouths... little do they know that they are giving their kids a type of addiction !!:-( .. Dustin 's life has been like a yoyo from the start. He did not have a proper up bring at all. I was a school teacher at a treatment center in West Texas. I am from alpine, TX. The treatment center is coed both boys and girls. They have different dormitories. The clients are placed into groups. If one member of the group gets in trouble the whole group goes into concrete room and remain there until they resolve the problem. The treatment will work but the client has to really take the treatment serious, otherwise it is useless. The fee is high so you must take it with an open mind. Dustin has not been a leader but instead a follower and that's has lead him down the wrong road and that is due to the lack of a proper up bringing. Now he is showing his maturity.

Hi Jack. I was so inspired by your very 1st SWU video that I shared it with my husband, who I believed needed to hear how you put all your life out there, and you came out the other side victorious. We have been married 20 yrs and both him and I struggled VERY badly with drug abuse, domestic violence (on both sides), lying, manipulating... you name it, and we did it. I was SA'd from the age of 3ish to 12 until the person moved away. I carried so much fear, mostly, on how to behave as a young teen, and I started masking it all with drugs. I felt I had a place there. My husband grew up without his bio dad, who is still using, and had a pretty hard go in his youth and teens. With all of that said, I am very thankful that you shared your darkness into the light to help others who can relate to so much you have been through. Thank you for having this platform for people to share their experiences. Thank you for articulating your thoughts and feelings so well. Congratulations to you on your sobriety and for letting God lead your path! Dustin's story is wonderful as well, and congrats to him, too! Im glad you're here and once again, thank you. You're truly 100% a stand-up, intelligent, and awesome person. Keep helping others the way you are. You will change lives. You changed mine in a positive way for sure. Much love-Jill. Sober date 8-12-2012.

49:46 I have a potentially controversial question, why do religious/spiritual individuals not claim their accomplishments as their own and instead insist God did said thing for them? From a genuine place of curiosity and respect. Thank you!

ThankU Fellows, this is great. Dustin's formulation of pain morphing to power is brilliant & useful. Abandonment is multi faceted. I was not physically abandoned. Rigidly over controlled rather. Old world upbringing=fascist, using fear, coercion to control. I credit the parents, they humbled themselves, apologized, became good friends. It's often asked which parent is easier to lose. I tend to think a boy needs a father first, don't really know. Emotional Abandonment... Ever get acupuncture? Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is very good at connecting emotions to specific organs/meridians. Anger associates to the liver. TCM calls liver "harmonizer of the emotions". Sorta no brainer: since liver's job is to purify blood, then when liver function is impaired, everything is affected, including mood. We drinkers remember how grouchy we get in the hangover phase. Thing is, even when we make the momentous change of abstaining, liver function remains impaired, sometimes for quite a while depending how much damage was done. That's why "dry drunk" is a real thing, not a psychological defect, but a metabolic imbalance. Compounded by the grief of withdrawal. All substances result in this

Great job on interview with Dustin. Jack, I never had the drug or alcohol abuse and never got into trouble with the law. So I found it super interesting, could see how my life probably came close to making some bad choices. You both are amazing to turn your lives around and should be proud of yourselves. Mine was more the abandonment of my parents when they divorced when I was 5. My dad had custody of us. So we had to learn to cook, clean, manage ourselves. My sister left home at 15 and moved to my mum’s house and I was left alone at 13. I was gay and had no one I could talk to. I had lots of issues with relationships and not wanting anyone one to get close to me. I stayed in the closet dated a couple of girls. They never worked out. I came out at 23 and was in a really toxic relationship for 13 years. He was an alcoholic and medication addicted. He would mentally and on a couple occasions physically abuse me. I was never good enough and was told I would never survive without him… I grew to believe it. That’s when I started to gamble on slot machines to escape what I was living with at home. There is so much more to this story. Let’s just say I walked out in the end with next to nothing. It took me 3 years to rebuild and to sort myself out and find out what I needed from life. That’s when life took a complete 180, and life is really good now. All the best from Melbourne Australia.

Many people do not realize that a gambling addiction is very serious, I’d assume as bad as drugs. I had my own experience with that. Changed my life forever. It’s been 16 years and I haven’t been able to forgive myself…I need to.

When I think of spirituality, I think of the purpose of Christ. He came to show each of us who we are. We're dual-natured beings of both temporal flesh and eternal spirit. He taught us that we're to crucify the Old Man [Carnal nature, self, ego, hate, etc] and to resurrect the New Man [Christ, Truth, love, selflessness, compassion, peace, etc]. We're born first of water as the son of man [flesh, carnal], and we're meant to be born again of fire/spirit as sons of God. The flesh is associated with the first Adam, and the spirit is associated with the last Adam [Christ]. ❤
