The major change in Zero Mission aside the graphics, cutscenes, and abilities, is the ending, which adds one final challenge after Mother Brain and some great character-focused moments for Samus.

It's the GBA's audio compression, since the system had limited space, they just compressed the crap out of the audio files

That's true for games with streamed audio, which a few GBA games did have but very few. The actual reason is there was no dedicated sound hardware apart from the legacy Game Boy channels, a left DAC, and a right DAC. Any synthesis not done by the Game Boy channels had to be done by the processor, which was weak and also busy with actually running the actual game, and so the synthesis was very low quality to not make too much work for the CPU.

IIRC there was literally no dedicated sound processing hardware in the GBA and every game had to use bespoke software-driven sound solutions, resulting in tinny/compressed audio and wildly different quality.

Kinda glad Zero Mission was my first Metroid game, it's just such a perfect jumping-off point for the rest of the series and to this day it still holds up in it's own right.

I would absolutely love to see more of this. Zero Mission is hands-down my favorite Metroid game.

Started replaying this game for like the 100th time yesterday. Wait until you make it to the chozo temple and get the full powered suit. Its single handedly the most empowering moment in any game ive ever played.

Probably my favorite Metroid gameplay-wise. It's so FAST!

Oh, this is a fun one. Yesterday I just dust off my Wii U, and bought Zero Mission on a whim. It took me a while to figure out "how", used as I am to just use paypal in the eshop, but now I fear I may have fallen into the Virtual Console void.

GBA's sounded like crap because they had a small all weather speaker running at like 1 watt. The sound chip was decent.

Don't know why you are getting likes because this is factually incorrect. The GBA had no sound chip, all sound had to be mixed by the CPU directly, which meant it was sharing CPU time with the game. Thus all the sound had to be heavily compressed which is why it sounded so tinny. And also the speaker was crap

Ledge grabbing debuted in Fusion, What is new here is Shinesparking when jumping in Morph Ball Mode, which Fusion didn't have which leads into some interesting tech.

This game is so good and only gets better. Lets see a part 2!

The prime music you are referring too is likely from AM2R. An amazing game that you should definitely try if you haven’t already.

That menu theme just gives me the 'stalgia. Zero Mission is my favourite 2D Metroid. I really like what they did with Samus' character toward the end of the game (not talking about the crash monologue, that's not very important). You only get a miniscule amount of characterisation but it's good. Better than in Fusion, honestly. I never liked the dialogues and monologues in that one. Having an otherwise silent protagonist suddenly speak their motivations out loud is too expressive. You could make the game in such a way that the player's actions become the convictions of the protagonist, even if the game is linear. Like this, the player and the protagonist can get an understanding without words. That's a subtle kind of magic.

I beat this game in one sitting back on release day in 2004, never played it again. Good times.

I have never heard Metroidvanias be referred to as “Search Action” games before.

Oh, speaking of spin offs something I'd love to see is a metroid game made like a resident evil game, BUT you can not play as samus. Her suit and stuff could be unlockables, but a metroid game that plays like either og resident evil or even the remakes would be amazing.

Fun Fact: Sonic 4 actually does get acknowledgment to this day. It got a special remix medley on the official Sonic the Hedgehog KZread channel recently, because SEGA has no shame!

This was the first Metroid game that I have ever played and is one of my favorites its where I learned how to bomb jump

Now this is legit my childhood game... My uncle and I used to play this game together all the time and I would just dink around while he would actually progress the game and I remember him showing me the ending and blowing me away since I could never get that far

This is my absolute favorite game. Probably what got me hooked on them permanently. I still spend an afternoon playing through it every once in a while. There is still no feeling like the endgame where you get the gravity suit and juggernaut your way through the rest of the game.

Probably my favorite Metroid game. One of the best remakes of all time.

Honestly, MZM is my favorite Metroid. I have played Fusion and Super but I love ZM because I feel it's controls are better for me and there's plenty of exploration despite it's more linear progression.

I felt like Zero Mission was more hand-holdy than Fusion personally.

I thought Zero Mission did a great job of expanding the original game. Though that "discovery" music during the stealth portion is as dreaded to me as the drowning music in Sonic.

I got this game sometime after playing the Prime 2 demo disc, prior to that I only knew about Metroid through Smash Bros. This and Mario World are some of my favorite GBA games and I'm glad Dread is coming soon... though it's kinda crazy the prices have increased, it's one of the most valuable games in my collection now

The Dread announcement made me go back and beat Fusion mode in Samus Returns. Then I’ve replayed and beat NES Metroid, Super Metroid, GB Metroid 2. I want to play Zero Mission but I lost my copy and I know I can emulate but I want it for my collection too.

My favorite game of the entire franchise and possibly my favorite game of all time.

the term "search-action" will always give me conniptions. Love Zero Mission tho. My first Metroid!

Great video Matt! This is a fantastic remake of the nes classic! I love the additional areas and bosses that fully expand the lore of Samus's history with the chozo and her ongoing battle with the space pirates, especially with mother brain and Ridley!! I would love if Nintendo would port the handheld games to the switch (still waiting for prime trilogy). Metroid needs better exposure and recognition with today's audience!!!

Objectively, the Fusion Suit is the weakest suit that Samus uses, next to the Zero Suit. So much of the Power Suit had to be removed, as a result of Parasite X, that it barely has any defensive abilities. That's why she''s able to casually grab onto ledges in "Fusion": the Fusion Suit is light enough to make ledge grabbing easy. Apparently, the normal Power Suits are heavy enough to require the Power Grip upgrade.

This was such a fun game. This one is close to my heart, Next to Super Metroid.

I got consoles a generation late too man. by the ps3 I finally had my own job etc but yeah this is an amazing game for the gba library for sure. really hope the new metroid game for switch knocks it out the park it looks awesome

I just went through and played this game about a week and a half ago. I'd never played it before but it definitely reminded me quite a bit of the original on the NES which is what I grew up with. It was a lot of fun, except for the final boss which actually just made me quit without actually beating it. It was just too frustrating and stupid lol.

C'mon Matt, you gotta finish it now. The last act is the coolest shit ever :D

This is my most played Gameboy Advanced game.
