Man, your personal response surprised me. Thanks. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I started my journey November 16th and wonder when to trim it up a bit. It's uneven on one side and looking rough. I appreciate your input.

I’m so happy I just stopped and watched this video because I’m a month in half into my journey and using the balm has my beard feeling hard and ruff. Now after seeing this video I know I’ve been doing it all wrong I will try to use less with water for now on. I use beard oil and the balm in my morning routine and @ night I just use Jamaican castor oil. I know I’m still the early stages of growth I just want my hair to be softer. Thanks for the info brotha I appreciate all the love you put on KZread that keeps me motivated on my journey 🙌🏿🙌🏿🔥🔥

Balm user atm but venturing into the DIY oil and butter. Mainly cost as you can with some research make it at home and have the same product but at greatly reduced costs. I must admit balm does leave the beard feeling dry after its set in where butter from yours and other ytubers looks like a much better way to look after the beard. Thank you for a well informed video on why butter is better over balm, and like with all things in life something's work better for some than others.

So I have to tell you D Hyde. I watched your video with butter versus balm and then I saw the answer video with Lump Confirming what you said and then Lump suggested watching beard tube to see what he said. I've had a whole thing of butter that I've never used to but I tried it because my beard is a little long right now. Just beard butter And a little bit of beard oil and man the results have been phenomenal just in the last few days I've done this. Once again thank you for all the information you give and that 1 you just did was a jem. Companies better start stocking up on butter cause this is about to go wild in 2020.

I totally agree with you brotha. I stop using balm because even with a small amount. A half of a dime that is, it still absorbed into my pores and caused light spots to form. But every time I stopped using for a few weeks and just used oil, my recovery time was pretty fast. After six too eight months lesser and lesser amounts I said no more for me brotha. My skin is just too freaking sensitive I think.

I tried to find ways to utilize all the balms I had back in the day, so I started using them for night routines. Though they have beeswax, I wanted to use them for their butters, and carrier oils etc for the night. In the morning just rinse it out in the hot shower and cowash. 💯👊🏽

I didn’t want to believe this, but damn you rite. I was disappointed that my beard had stop growing, but I took your suggestion and stop using balm for a few days (I use balm religiously, so this was new to the routine) and now that I pick out my beard, the end result is much longer than when I’m using balm. I’ll continue to use balm for work since it holds everything neatly for me, but at least I know the true length of my beard so I’m not discouraged that it’s stop growing.

So I left balm but would apply a layer of beard oils still right after getting out the shower and another layer after I put my shirt on ready to go out. Now use the balm for my head hair to lay it down and on my eyebrows and Mustache not gonna let that beard balm go to waste lol

Hey D Hyde, Thanks for sharing your beard experiences and expertise. My beard couldn't be any more different from yours -- mine is snow white and very straight, but I've had similar experience with balms - the build up, weighing my beard down. Since deciding to exclusively use beard butters and not balms, my beard has never felt softer. I haven't even missed the control or hold from the beeswax. And, I've been making my own beard butter at home which I like better than any other I've tried - shea butter, argan oil, and sweet almond oil. My next batch, I going to use shea butter, jojoba oil, argan oil, coconut oil, and a little castor oil (since my gray beard hairs are very thin, castor oil should help with fly aways). Keep up the work and thanks for your wisdom, my friend!

I've seen a lot of people moving away from using balm. Balm has never really worked for me. When my beard was shorter it would hold it in place for about an hour and then the craziness would pop back out. Now I just use oil and butter and it works great. Every now and then if I have a spot that won't stay down, I'll use a bit of balm to help get it back in place, but it doesn't happen very often.

  • @maxey05

I got away from the balms too. It was locking up my hair too much with my coarse curly beard.. hard to comb through and manage and yeah, product build up with the beeswax.. It’s all about the oil! Softens and gives my hair elasticity and manageability. The oil seems to penetrate the best with low porosity hair. And for me if I want a little more style I use thicker oils like Artius Man which has castor and shea oil in it.

@@Bthebarber I'm brown (from India originally / based in London). So straight but very, very unruly hair. I use balm and oil both together before I leave the house. Do you think I should use it? My beard is not as thick as yours by the way. It's quite small. Only 2cm I think.

CatchaDouble You can definitely use the balm.. If your beard is unruly, the balm would help by holding and keeping it together.

I made the mistake of thinking beard balm or butter were the way to go. I have dumped them both and switched to oil and now my beard doesn't feel heavy and unnaturally greasy! Beard balms and butters have also ruined my clothes. Imho as a relative novice bearded man. The correct amount of oil is a 100% the best way forward. The longer my beard gets the more it loves oils! Butters seemed to dry my beard out and make it really curl up. Balms just too sticky for me personally.
