I'm disappointed... || Ship of Magic Book Review || Realm of the Elderlings #4

With the love I had for the Farseer trilogy I was excited to continue on with the Realm of the Elderlings series. Unfortunately this book really didn't connect with me in any meaningful way and left me wanting all of the joy and goodness (and pain and heartache) that I knew Robin Hobb was capable of. I hope this series gets better in book 2.

I felt exactly the same when I started actually. I really missed Fitz, and I was mostly reading Liveships to fill in the gaps between Farseer and Tawny Man, but as you go, the reason the characters all kind of suck becomes clearer. A lot of these books explore dealing with imperfect people in an awful world, and a lot of those themes really start to come together as you finish (and the characters grow *a lot*). I won’t say I didn’t miss Fitz, but by the end I felt a little sad to leave all these guys too

Aww man, too bad that the book didn't live up to your expectations! Personally, I really liked these characters! I liked how thoughtful and introspective Wintrow was, even if he had a bit of a holier-than-thou attitude and was incredibly naive. I liked Althea's stubbornness and how she refused to give up on her dreams, even in situations where she was abrasive and arrogant. I even liked Malta's scheming personality even though the things she got up to were... quite something in this book. Following Kennit was rough, but even then there's something fascinating about how skillfully and successfully he manipulates the people around him. I guess what I'm trying to say is that even though these characters are incredibly flawed in different ways, weirdly enough that's actually a big part of what made me relate to them and invested in them.

I just finished the first 100 pages of SOM and this is very much how I’m feeling about these characters. I love the setup of “here’s a character with insane personal strengths who also has massive character flaws.” Even without knowing where the plot is headed, I can feel significant character growth coming and I’m here for it.

I have to say that I felt exactly the same as you did while reading Ship of Magic... However, the second book had some redeeming qualities and by the time I got to the third book, I was hooked. Although I never really got connected to the characters like some other readers seem to, they did definitely grow on me throughout the whole series. The scope of the world (and plot) keeps expanding with each book and 'secrets' around the magic are quite cool once they get revealed. I hope you will also have a better time with the rest of the series! If not, then I can assure you that the Tawny Man Trilogy will not disappoint... it is so good to be back with Fitz!

Gasp! Keep reading! I had a bit of a struggle at the start of this book because it was such an abrupt change from the Farseer Trilogy (which I knew going in, but I still anticipated more obvious connections and tie-ins). But I would very, very much recommend you keep going - I don’t want to give spoilers, but the character arcs and worldbuilding developments are incredible as you go along! I'm sad that you didn't like this book, but I totally get it. If you don't connect with the characters, you really can't love the book, because the plots are so character driven anyway. Like you said, if you think all the characters are making stupid decisions... I loved the books because I did connect with so many of the characters. I also really appreciated Hobb's craft here. The multiple perspectives really opened up new ways to see the characters and better showed the conflict between them. We really got both sides to most of the conflicts. And, of course, the funnest part of these books for me were the interactions of Brashan and Althea. Yes, they are idiots sometimes, but they're idiots that I love and ship. I hope you enjoy the next books, for your own happiness :). I'm looking forward to your review videos for them, either way.

I totally agree with you but in the long run I was so glad I finished the trilogy just for the connections to the Fitz and the Fool's story line that come up as the series goes on. Its very clever the way Hobb does this. Basically the third trilogy(Tawny man), even though it goes back to Fitz's point of view, will bring the story lines and some characters from both the first (Farseer)and second (Liveship) trilogies together. Just my opinion but I think you would miss out if you don't read both. Also the other comments are right about some character growth and a more flushed out plot as you get through the next two books.

But, I read the Liveship books once and that was enough. I’ve tried to reread them a couple of times and just can’t. I didn’t dislike them, they just aren’t up to the same standard as Fitz! The only thing I really appreciate about them is the brief connection we find to Fitz and the Fool much later in Fitz’ narrative... and you could Google that without reading the Liveship books. 😂

I loved Farseer and Live Ship both. The first book in Liveship is a set up book just like Assassins Apprentice. It is a big change with multiple POV and it’s not first person so it’s understandable you didn’t connect as much. Without spoilers it sounds like you were frustrated with the decisions main characters made that took them on this journey of change. I connected with those decisions from the point of view of a society that had largely recognized the benefits of equal partnership between the man and woman of a household but had recently been forced to adopt a patriarchal view through the influx of immigration from another culture. Everyone (women in particular) are on shaky ground with trying to figure out their place and how much they can push the new cultural boundaries. Later books will expand on character growth and the tie with the Rain Wilds a great deal. I look forward to see how you feel at the end of the trilogy.

I kind of agree with you. I didn’t struggle with Liveship Traders as much as you did, but I realise now it was only because I was in a hurry to get back to Fitz :) There was also a secondary character I loved blindly after spoiling some things for myself. I hope you get to the Tawny Man trilogy one day, you’ll probably like it. I’m currently struggling with Rain Wild Chronicles and I have the same issue with it: the characters are annoying. I guess Robin Hobb writing multiple POVs just isn’t for me. A lot of people do love the Liveship Traders. My friend loved it more than the Farseer because more things are happening, there is significantly less overanalysing (Fitz does that a lot) and more characters to choose from. Althea seems to be a very popular character:)

You know what...I actually feel the same way. When I rated the book after I had binged the Farseer Trilogy and loved each book progressively more, in this trilogy (The Liveship Traders), I rated the books progressively downward (starting with 4.5, then 4, then 3.5). I have gone on to Goodreads and adjusted my ratings to show my thoughts since reading it. IF and WHEN I do a reread, I will adjust the ratings appropriately...showing my thoughts at the beginning, to when I changed them (now) and what I have come to feel about the books (when the reread is completed...some time in the future). I really agree. If I hadn't of read The Farseer Trilogy, I definitely wouldn't have finished the series. Unfortunately, the trilogy only gets slightly better IMO, but not significantly. You basically have to muddle on with these characters that continually do things that you wish they didn't. I liked the ship aspect, but even towards the end of the trilogy, the mystic of the ships and where they came from was diluted by over-explaining the "why" and I was less interested in the Ship's magic at the end...than I was when I didn't know as much. This is just my opinion. It definitely is an unpopular opinion. Love or hating characters. YES, I'm with you. Should I like/love this character? Should I hate this other character? I'm with you. I was always wondering what the author's intent was...and if I was ONE with the author's intent, OR just not vibing with what she was going for. I hear you. I TOTALLY agree. The writing was a Step DOWN from the Farseer Trilogy. Did you peak into my mind? I was thinking the same thing. Wow! Yes, again...this is only my opinion.

I am a die hard fan of this trilogy, so as requested I will attemp to explain myself. I do not think it will help you much, though. I loved all the chatacters. I enjoyed reading all the PoV's. I often don't care for switchibg PoV because I get attached to the character, but in LT I enjoyed every single one. Ok, except for the sea serpents, which were thankfully brief. Now I realise my feelings on this are the exact opposite of yours. I respect that. I just did not find any of the characters overly flawed or dumb. Some of them I of course found despicable as people, yet I still enjoyed reading about them. Why? I think Robin Hobb has exceptional insight in psychology, which shines through in LT. She will not shy away from the fact that even decent people can make evil choices when pressed enough, even evil people can actually, possibly inadvertedly, cause some good effect in the world. Everyone has their own struggle and trauma, much like we do irl, and the character lies in how they deal with it all. They are all coping, some are struggling, some are failing and some learn to thrive. I feel that no matter how different these characters' thoughts might be from mine, I get them. Sometimes it's even a tad disturbing, since some of them have a pretty messed up minds. But it is enjoyable. It is like a conversation to read about them. But I won't say "Go on, it gets better." I perdonally was hooked from the start. But if by the end of SoM you are not interested in the characters, I would not hold out too much hope. The series extremely character driven. If you think the other stuff can carry you through, then go for it. You like what you like. My aim was to explain and converse , not throw any shade. Nice to hear an opposite perspective to things.

The emotional payoff in the last book was amazing. And one of the upsides IMHO was that there was no Fitz, a protagonist that I never really grew to like, didn't really care about, and mostly was annoyed by (have read all series in the realm of the elderlings and my opinion of Fitz never changed).

I've read the first 13 books (only having not read the last trilogy), and though I pretty much find most of the books to be middling, this was my favorite series of the Elderlings books. Can't really go into detail about why. I remember liking the plight of the ships and sea dragons, but it's been years so much of the detail is gone now, and as I stated, I think pretty much all her books a mediocre, so I will not do a re-read of any of the series.

Couldn't connect with any of the characters? *YES!* Finally someone agrees with me! (btw, I'm still stuck at 150 pages, haven't picked it up since November, I think 😅 I mean, why would I want to read about an uncharismatic pirate captain, creepy kid or someone like Althea?!!) What is the character that you wanted to dnf the book for (please say Althea 😂 - she's the main reason I'm considering dnf-ing the whole Realm of the Elderlings series - I've only heard praises sung in her honor and I dislike her so much that I wanna chuck her overboard from her own beloved ship 😂😅) The only kinda sorta likeable char for me is the first mate char atm. Although I've also heard that ship chars are more likable and worth following than humans. Is that true? 🤔

  • @QuestLegacy

So you aren't even fully into the WORST character in the book so far. Somewhere past the 50% mark there is a new completely intolerable POV introduced. Althea was also awful though she gets a bit better in this book. Kennit is a monster imo. I'd agree with the ships being the most interesting characters lol.

Is that worst char perhaps Althea's sister? I heard that if I don't like Althea, I'm gonna dislike her sister even more and I don't even know if that's possible 😂 I also don't know how Althea could be redeemed in my eyes 🤔 Was Kennit her brother in law? I don't like him, but hey, he actually stood up for his wife when Althea called her own sister a whore, so at least there's that (so far at least). Good to know that the ships are interesting chars - I desperately need somebody to root for in that series as I'm losing interest in it by a day 😅

Oh, that's right! I haven't picked up the book for so long that I mixed them up 😄 But the pirate captain is pretty terrible right from the start, so I can totally imagine him being monstrous. Oh, that's not comforting! I don't think I heard anyone warn me about her (or maybe I am mixing up names again 😂). Is she Malta or is Althea's sister Malta? That's the char I have been warned about.

I have read the first six books of the farseer series before I started the ship trilogy. I read the second book last year and will read the third this. What is keeping me reading is actually the love story 😅 between Althea and Brashen (dunno if that are their Englisch names I read in German) but I understand what u mean. Most of the characters are just to stupid and blind it seems, it will get better at the end of book two tho. But I wouldn't say one must read it before continuing with farseer. Farseer is by far way better I think. But I dislike ship fantasy books anyway 😅🤣

I presume you are a big fan of this one. Were you a big fan of Kennit and Althea? By the end of the book Althea had started to annoy me less. I assume she is going to be a character that gets a lot of growth moving forward. Kennit seemed like a character that might have been an inspiration for the "Jack Sparrow" character who I did like, but Kennit himself didn't click right. Amber and Paragon's arc was interesting to me, but really sat in the background of this one. I assume that continues to evolve as well.
