Yes, it is a big part of ASL communication. It's called non-manual markers (also known as "facial expressions). It consist of the various facial expressions, head titling, shoulder raising, mouthing, and similar signals that we add to our hand signs to create meaning. ASL is a truly language for the Deaf people.

Please continue to feature them! More people need to learn about the deaf community and sign language. I wish there would have been more of these videos available when I'd taken ASL in college.

MY PEOPLE!!!!!! I'm not deaf but I do ASL, i grew up mute. Deaf people are more fun to talk to the hearing being 100% honest. The deaf community judge less it seems.

Luna Koroa My son cannot speak due to apraxia. He's 20 months old and knows more words than most kids his age. He just signs them instead of speaking. I get just as excited as any other mom when he learns a new word!

Wellllll, that’s not entirely true. The Deaf community doesn’t judge so much if you want to learn the language and culture, but among Deaf, deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard-of-Hearing there is sooo much judgement and negativity. Not Deaf enough, not Hearing enough, deaf but Hearing-minded... there is so much all the time. It depends on where you go, and certain sub-communities.

Often there is a (miguided) belief that it's best to mainstream Deaf children (e.g. "lip-reading") so they can operate in the "real" world. So they have a no-ASL home.

@@J_Gamble What you said is correct! My parents believed the doctors and the audiologist that learning ASL would hinder my ability to acquire English language. Little did they know, I picked up ASL at school and spoke at home. Once my dad caught me conversing with my friends in sign language, he realized that nothing will stop me from doing what I love. Sometimes I wish that I could go back to find the doctors and the audiologists that told my parents the myth and say "Hi! I can't believe that you fooled my parents who were intelligent into believing that I should be an oralist." So backward.

litteraly every normal person that didn't grow up with english as their mother tongue can do this. me for example, i grew up speaking dutch but since i'm from belgium we had tv in english, french, german and dutch (sometimes spanish too) and almost everything was subtitled (and even though my english may not be perfect this is a big plus for learning new language)

I once got on a long flight with an entire deaf baseball team. I only know a few words and letters in Asl, so I couldn't understand what they were all saying. So I wrote down questions and answers. It made the flight super fun for everyone. I learned so much! We were all just normal people, doing normal things. Best flight ever!

One of my best friends growing up was deaf! I met her when I was three. I didn't fully understand at first what it meant that she was deaf but I just knew I wanted to be friends! She started teaching me how to sign and communicate with her, and her mom would teach me as well! Although my signing wasn't always perfect, we grew up together just like any other best friends! I wish that adults could be as non judgemental as kids and just get to know people 💖

Okay, I LOVE how BuzzFeed has been adding a lot more Deaf-based videos. Being fluent in ASL now as well as knowing the culture, ASL has become my favorite language overall. 🤟🏼♥️ Edit: for everyone saying the captions are too fast or ASL is so fast - ASL does not translate into direct English. The signs are not the exact English word in the caption so it seems like they are signing the full captioned sentences fast. SEE is signing the full sentence. 😊

@@cesar6004 I like to watch anime and movies with subtitles, too. In this video I wanted to fully take in that other language, that I don't know. With forgein movies and anime I still can hear the language. Both sign language and subtitles I have to take in visually and I can't do that at the same time and this fast. Since English isn't my first language either, I can't read it as fast, even though I would like to think that I've gotten quite good. Also: Yay, anime! ;)

Deaf people actually can enjoy music, especially with a lot of bass like rock. There’s even deaf bands! You should check out Beethoven’s Nightmare, an all-deaf rock band😊

Both my grandparents were deaf. My whole family other than them can hear. Ive always had a huge interest in the deaf community. They are people, just like us, just trying to communicate.

I’m Deaf and I was grinning throughout the entire video as I was watching this

Years ago my husband learned ASL because he didn't like not being able to communicate with people. It's served him well, be it talking to a neighbor or a coworker. I don't know more than a few words myself. IMO you don't need to be perfectly fluent. People appreciate that you try and show them respect.

As an ASL interpreter in a mainstream school, I have encountered a lot of interpreters like the ones she describes and it’s infuriating. We’re there to empower Deaf students, NOT oppress. One of the reasons I’m leaving the field altogether :/

They omit all the filler words. So instead of saying something like, "What is your name?" they say, "Name, you?"

Along with the comment above, it’s the same as any other spoken language you aren’t fluent in-it sounds faster because you don’t know the meanings associated with the words and thus it all kinda blurs together :)

I think English in general is typically spoken slower than other languages so it can be jarring to see how fast they go. I felt the same way when I listened in on a Chinese conversation, so were speaking so quickly I wondered how they could hear the tones.

english and American sign language is completely different. So they are translating what they are singing into proper english, but they are not signing those exact words.

Yes sign languages compared to English language much faster. I’m BSL and always notice difference when with interpreters. 😂

Imagine you’re getting jumped by a group of deaf people and you see one of them sign “take his ears”

One of the rare buzzfeeed videos besides worth it, that i find wise and touching. I am hearing impaired myself, can't hear out of my left ear and partial hearing loss on the right. It is so hard to communicate or make sure you know what's going on, when you can't hear or hear so well. It is so easy to feel alone and out of touch. But I also loved the ladies mind set of acceptance of self that was always a hard struggle for me. Very powerful video.

She is so naturally beautiful.

Glad to see these two back again. Really interesting, even if I can't understand ASL at all. I found out that ASL is actually descended from French Sign Language, and that's why is totally different to the BSL sign language group. Also I can't believe Mixxie didn't learn ASL until he was 18. That would have been so difficult. I think all schools should teach that country's sign language.

Roz Harris BSL was also invented by a heating person ASL is a combination inspired by FSL and Martha’s Vineyard Sign Language and signed people made (home signs)

Yes, I would be useful in real life as well. When you’re in situations where you can’t talk or can’t hear what the other person is saying. It’ll also make us more understanding of deaf people and their culture.

Please continue to make more of these videos. I think that more hearing people and hard of hearing people will want to watch them because we want to be respectful and enjoy being friends with others. It has been my experience that hearing people (young people and students) will group hard of hearing and deaf in the same category and they think that because we can't hear, we do not know when they are making fun of us and being annoying. I am not deaf, just have a moderate hearing loss corrected by hearing aids. I have always wanted to know how to interact with the deaf community in a respectful way. Deaf people are intelligent and perfectly able to do anything they put their mind to. They are not help less and deserve the same respect and dignity we all have for each other.

This is so true I agree with Maxxie I think his name was and Lia. Where deaf people are just like us, just they can’t hear us, they can do everything we can do just have a different way of communication. We don’t need to fear them we just need to learn more about their culture and understand that they too have been under a lot of hardships just like everyone else. If we work together to become better communicating and understanding each other’s cultures, history and languages we will be better as whole.

i am so excited to learn ASL! Our differences are what make us Beautiful! I think sign language is the most beautiful language because it uses words and expressions to make words, just like our tone can make a sentence sound sweet or sarcastic I have a few deaf tables come in every now and again and I cant wait to see their faces when i can actually speak a full sentence to them

I wish they taught ASL more in schools, they do have it in one school in my district but it just needs to be more readily available to learn because it’s so critical to understanding people ❤️

Mixxie and Lia have such nice personalities I feel like they'd be really cool if I ever met them!

Part of my wishes that I ended up fully deaf instead of just half deaf? I like the ability it gives me to still express myself, but there's more of a barrier than if one was completely deaf because people can't tell if you're being serious of not. I have to always ask for headphones and such that are designed for one ear so I'm not uncomfortable. I can completely tone out people if they are on my deaf side. And, spatial audio doesnt work for me. I also can't sign for the life of me, but I'd really love to. I'm a very tactile learner because of my disability, which can definitely be very hard for school I'm thankful for the job that I have that is very hands on and experimental.

So if a person is timid, will they make fewer facial expressions when using ASL?

i think actually the signs would most likely be smaller or slower, they might even avoid eye contact while signing though it depends on the person. facial expressions are both grammatical and can show different meanings for certain words. generally speaking in deaf culture it's common to be very blunt/straightforward so it's not a common issue! the closest comparison i can think of to lack of facial expressions would be when someone speaks in monotone. it lacks inflection, emotion, or emphasis.

okay i need to express this: I really like the ppl in this video, they made me realise how much more complex signing is and also how big of a difference it makes (or that there even is one) in changing between ASL and SEE. The text is a little to fast for my liking so i had to pause a lot and it stopped me from looking at them, but thats inevitable i guess since they didnt sign in a slow pace and the text has to keep up. Also the are both quite good looking and fun so I hope to see them return in more vids ^^

SilverFlame819 damn I’ll explain to your again. The reason parent did not learn sign language cause.......it hard for them to learn ASL when they got surprised gift how their child is deaf or HOH. Imagine your child born deaf or become deaf by “accident” how could you deal with it? Can you memorize 16 sign language in one day? No? Well....That’s why parents of deaf children have many years to try memorize sign language.

Im lucky enough to go to a school with an integrated deaf program. Im not deaf however they teach everyone the alphabet in elementary, we have classes with deaf students, and in high school you can learn it. Sadly we are one of few schools that do that... we have to have deaf students bussed in from like an hour away because not many other schools have that

I became hard of hearing (almost deaf) not so long ago and yeah, going out alone in public is still something I need to get used to. You never know how important is your hearing until you lose it.

I'm hearing and would LOVE to meet deaf people. I live in Western Australia, nearly 26 and have never met anyone from the deaf community. I feel like if we had more exposure to the deaf community the barriers would come down more. I also wish our schools taught us how to sign so if we did end up meeting someone who was deaf the communication barrier wouldn't be so difficult and awkward for both deaf and hearing.

In 20 years I have not seen a video so inspiring and hope giving and astounding. I have just read Oliver Sack's book "Seeing Voices" which blew me away; these videos are miracles. Anyone interested in the history of sign language and the experience of deaf persons would be enriched by Sack's book. Thank you so much you beautiful people !!!!!!

Mixxe, said he loves to travel. I loved to meet him and Lia too!! I'm hearing and I sign. I'm not fluent or interpreter but many times I came across meeting a Deaf person I told I was really good at signing, especially if I don't use it often as I should. I do try to practice on my own, lucky I can remember what I learn in college. But growing up with a friend who's mom was Deaf and a good friend of mine mainstream in my HS and oh my friends sister is Deaf... Yeah. I I'm well aware of Deaf community. Yes Mixxie is super cute.

Everyone wants to read but not miss their expressions at the same time. Why is this so hard.

I love sign, I know a good amount. I just struggle with ASL and I use SEE. I love learning new signs every day. The only thing is my reception sucks sometimes. I have to ask deaf ppl to slow down xD I cannot sign that fast or understand that fast!!!!

This is one of the reasons I want to learn ASL ! So many cool people and not enough people know how to communicate with them with their own language!

I am currently doing my best to learn ASL but I'm having issues finding the right source. If you have any tips please let me know. I've always been interested in the deaf community but have never had a chance or the knowledge to interact with someone of the deaf community. I truly admire the ingenuity that the deaf people of old and wish that I could have something to do with the deaf community because of it. I have always loved helping those in need and want to help the deaf community to unite with the hearing community. I even plan to adopt a deaf child to help them and to give them a chance. Because I long to know sign language, and don't think of the deaf as lesser or worthless, but instead I think of the deaf as a high esteem group can join. I think of the deaf as lucky because of the lack of hearing. When you are missing something then you begin to be grateful for things that you never would have even acknowledge, and you begin to look at things differently. I way this from experience, although I am hearing I still have suffered great losses. Because of losses important people I have been forced to look at the world in a much different way and to be grateful for everything. On top of that I have also been bullied which gave me even more reason for looking at things differently. Keeping an open mind is the only way to enter new worlds.

I would imagine a lot of people see it as being a disability. We are all different, nothing more.
