I completely agree with the last idea you presented in this video: that the development of ideas shouldn't be restricted in terms of "atomicity" because if you always create cards under this principle, your future self is not gonna find value in the notes. Luhmann used to develop his ideas with no restriction whatsoever. Many ideas develop over multiple cards. Cheers from Chile!

Hey! Having cards communicating with each other is something that emerges over time. I wouldn't stress about it especially since you're just starting out :D

Thank you for documenting your journey with this. I just recently started with the whole analog zettelkasten thing after having done it digitally for a few months in Obsidian. For whatever reason, I was drawn to the analog version, despite every logical fiber in my being saying, "You know this would be so much easier if you just kept using Obsidian, right?" My intuition is telling me that the analog way will force me to wrestle with my thoughts more, process them, and notate them meaningfully and succinctly.

Ah! Congrats on being brave. The true zettelkasten is scary at first and hard! Only because you’ll be afraid you are doing it wrong or that you’re gonna screw it up. But then one day it all clicks and it’s so easy and works like nothing else. If you stick with it you’ll be laughing at the idea of a digital zettelkasten, mainly because such a thing is impossible. I was blown away when I realized the some of the most important parts of zettelkasten do not and cannot work in digital apps. Also, once you start making notes, it’s a blast. Hope my videos help you get through the fear stages. I highly recommend Scott Schepers book for actually building it and doing it.

Hi! Love that you are documenting your journey as you learn. One thing that I noticed around the 9:42 mark was that you were talking about the cards as an outline and worrying about hierarchy. The way that I learned Zettel-Kasten was that all of the main cards behind a topic are siblings and have equal weight. For example, if you were making a Zettle-Kasten about sandwiches you start with a card for bread, a card for filling, and a card for spreads. These cards are siblings and have equal weight. You wouldn't worry about the order. So, bread might be S001, spreads S002, and fillings S003. Then you have wheat bread and pumpernickel, so they are S001a and S001b. Mayo is S002a, and cucumbers are S003a. Now you have peanut butter. Is that a filling or a spread? Where you put it and how you reference it, that's up to you. It's what begins to make your knowledge specific. What if you suddenly added a new category like spices? Depending on your numbering system that number could be vastly different than the first three. The thing that I took away from Mr. Luhman and Mr. Ahrens is to hold back on the urge to preplan too much. Eventually a structure will suggest itself, and it may not be what you thought it would be when you started. On another note, putting reference on the back of the card helps keep things clearer, in my opinion. Again, thank you for the video. My hat if off to you for doing it in medias res, in front of people. Very commendable

Hey! You’re great at explaining this stuff. Perfect examples. Because of the time, I’ve already learned this. Where were you when I made that video! 😂 that sandwich metaphor woulda saved me a lot of fretting. You’re awesome. Thanks for commenting.

Stick with it. It's the hardest part we all know. For sure keep the videos simple like you are doing. That's a great deal because it will keep you getting bogged down in editing. The best videos of Scott Schepper are his early, raw ones

10:41 this is why Scott Scheperd starts with the Number 1000 so that there is enough space bevor the very first card in your System.

If it were me, I would start the numbering system on 0, and if it turns out the idea is not the first in the sequence, I use negative numbers, -1, -2 etc. Might be harder to determine where the starting point is using this approach but it saves having to reorganise the numbers.

Just found your channel through this video. I recently made the decision to go back to analog as well and, specifically, note card organization for my day and for running RPGs. Thanks for making this type of video. Just straight up, nothing fancy and working through the issues you are having. I'm feeling a lot of the same so its good to watch and learn from! Your comments at 16:30 echo my thoughts exactly on atomic notes and making entries that hold value and are not silos!

I appreciate that. I'm kind over all the flash of youtube and just want to share thoughts. As you say keeping it simple. I'm glad they are connecting with you. I smile every time someone says they are returning to analog-i think we'll all be happier somehow. :)

Don’t worry about wasting 3, you have infinite natural numbers. If there’s no card under it, so be it. About the categories, when you build your index, you naturally start linking a card to different categories. Basically what I’m saying is trust the system. By the way, I find Ahrens book a little confusing about the physical Zettelkasten. I suggest you check Scott Scheper Antinet book. It’s a big book, but Scott explains beautifully how the Zettelkasten works.
