    Any time I see Strother Martin and Newman together, my mind just immediately zooms back to Cool Hand Luke, and I start hearing those words. "What we've got here is ... failure, to communicate."

    Strother Martin was a genius character actor. No wonder Paul had him in so many of his films. My favorite line of his in BUTCH AND SUNDANCE:: “Morons. I’ve got morons on my team. Nobody is gonna hit us going DOWN the mountain. Going DOWN the mountain we got no money. Comin’ back up...THAT’S when you can start to sweat!”

    There's minor historical inconsistency here! The word moron was was coined by psychologist Henry H. Goddard in 1910. Butch and Sundance died in 1908.

    @Franco Spain You DO realize that the good guys in this movie are outlaws and the bad guys are corporate thugs. On getting this payroll job, they bushwhack and kill some Mexican bandits. Butch Cassidy laments at how the first time he ever killed anybody was when he was on the side of the law, after which they returned to robbing banks.

    @@Kermit_T_Frog Well, the guys they shot, in self-defense were Bolivian, not Mexican. But, I get your point, and I concur. I think it should also be noted, that Butch and Sundance were real life characters. And while it's still a film, it seems they went out of their way to make it fairly accurate. Raindrops, Keep Falling on my Head, nothwithstanding.

    @@waynej2608 I get tired of these of old farts longing for days that never were. People in the 70s were pretty much as "woke" then as they are now. My biggest pet peeve are the prudes lamenting all the sex on screen nowadays. If anything, there is less of that now than there was in the 70s. When most of these geezers were rummaging around the house looking for their father's stash of playboys.

    Read something by the movie's screenwriter, the late, great, William Goldman, who said something to the effect that they knew making it that "nothing happened" in the movie, no specific goal or caper, and that everything rode on the audience liking the characters. So many great lines.

    That guy was absolutely loved by his fellow actors and the big "stars". He was the bacon in the bean soup in his films. Wonderfully funny 🤣🤣🤣.

    Strother Martin was one of my all time favorite character actors. Ornery was a role he was born to play.

    Although Martin appeared in more than sixty films and multiple roles on television shows, my favorite was his sniveling character in "...Liberty Valance. " He and Lee Van Cleef, as Floyd and Reese, were Marvin's toadies. Most recall his role in Cool Hand Luke and the iconic line, " What we've got here is, 'failure to communicate.' " A character actor par excellence.

    One of Strother Martin's earliest credited speaking roles (a very effectively played bit part) was in "Kiss Me Deadly" (1955), directed by the great Robert Aldrich and Ralph Meeker's best film - an iconic performance. One of my favorite films and my favorite film noir.

    The way he says "Sometimes' always cracks me up. It's like he starts unconfidently, then gets a little louder and higher pitched to sound more confident. But he's still saying "Sometimes" so it's still not confident.

    I always liked how the Kid downplayed how great a shot he was. He shows that with his answers to Percy's questions: Percy: "Can you hit anything?" Sundance: "Sometimes." Percy: "Move? What the hell do you mean move?" Sundance: (hits the target with two great shots) "I'm better when I move."

    Loved this movie!! Stronger Martin as others have mentioned, was a brilliant character actor. There’s no doubt Paul Newman enjoyed working along with him. This was the first pairing of Newman and Redford. They only did one other-“The Sting” Both Brilliantly Acted Movies by these 2 Great Actors!!

    @@kevinmalone3210 Given the choice I too would have chosen Butch & Sundance. MC was the first X Rated film to win Best Picture and was probably thought of as more modernist and cool. Saw Butch when it was first released . I was about eight and it's stuck with me for 50 years.

    I believe the shooting of the small rock was borrowed from the movie “ Shane “. In that film Alan Ladd’s character Shane blasted a small rock when demonstrating his prowess with a six gun.
