Robin Fisher thank you so much! And thank you for being an incredible force in your students’ lives. I had so many teachers who stopped and told me that I could be successful, even if I was falling behind the auditory material in class. It makes such a huge difference!

My daughter was born with bilateral hearing loss and just had her second ear implanted. She’s currently doing well, reaching her developmental milestones (except for speech) I look forward to this beautiful journey for her. I’ve been contemplating getting a cochlear implant. I have unilateral hearing loss.

Lovely lady. I was born with rubella and am bilaterally deaf as a result. Hearing aids where my devices most of my life until march 2020 when I was fitted with an implant to my right ear. I can relate to alarms in hospital environments after having spent 7 years working one as a nurse assistant. With my cochlear implant, I have no sense of direction with sounds but have associated certain sounds to certain things since. Bluetooth is awesome.

I am hearing impaired and wear hearing aids on both ears. I’m going into nursing next month and I was really worried about my hearing loss preventing me from becoming a nurse. I’ll obviously face some challenges here and there, especially with the mask mandates in hospitals where I live. I rely often times on lip reading but your tip of repeating things is very clever. Your video really inspired me and proved that people that are deaf can surely do it, so why can’t I! Thank you for this amazing video! Btw are you facing any challenges currently due to mask mandates or did you face some in the past?

Nurse Alley - Have you ever tried using an Omni-directional remote microphone with your Cochlear implant? With both Cochlear and Remote Mic microphones active? If you have, I'd try wearing it on your left shoulder. I tiny neodymium magnet stitched into your clothing is a handy way to attach and remove easily. I'm not officially trained on Cochlear implants, though I believe the brain should recognize over time the acoustical difficulties of sounds coming from the left and right for 3 possible reasons. 1 - The slight difference in the sound from the remote mic compared to your Cochlear Implant, 2 - ITD - Interaural Time Difference and 3 - IID - Interaural Intensity difference due to the head shadow effect 2 & 3 are arguable as the brain normally processes this comparing left and right ears. As you only have one working ear, the brain will find it harder to compare the acoustical cues using only one ear. I can imagine the best results would be from having the remote mic volume as low as possible at first. This way you should not overwhelm the residual hearing you have in your right ear. I'm not aware of the actual 'frequency resolution' available through a Cochlear implant. I'd speak to your Audiologist to see what he thinks about this idea. WOW! You're such an inspiration!

Hi Alley! What kind of headphones are you using for your ThinkLab One stethoscope? I know some people are using streamer to connect it via bluetooth. Although my hearing aids has bluetooth they don't have an available streamer to attach my stethoscope. I had found out what kind of headphones I should get. Something that is not cumbersome to carry around in the hospital. Do you have any suggestions? I would reapply appreciate it. Thank you.

I have gotten better at taking a pulse ever since I received my diagnosis & wear a hearing aid. I’m hoping I will pass the CNA exam because I failed on the skills part. At the time I didn’t have hearing aids now I do.
