You just verbalized everything I felt during my internship and ICU last year! I will be starting my first job as an RN in the ICU in two weeks and I'm excited to start knowing that those are real feelings and it's normal to feel that way because there's a lot to learn in the ICU!

I could not relate to this more! I am a new grad in the ICU and am on week 4 of my preceptorship. I feel everything that you explained throughout every shift. Thank you for reminding me I am not alone and it will get better!

Hello. Im not a New Nurse but I am New to Critical Care. I worked in Obstetrics and Gynecology for 11years. I got bored and felt that I needed to grow as a Nurse, learn new skills and some how wanting professional growth. This is just my 4th week working in Critical Care and It feels like I am back as a new grad Nurse. Everything you have said is spot on! It’s overwhelming. I used to be very organised, efficient and fast. Now I am very slow and still learning. but I am lucky to be surrounded by supportive team of Nurses who are very encouraging and helpful for my transition.

I'm about to start my final semester of nursing school and really interested in working ICU. I like the idea of having 2 patients and knowing everything about them vs having several and not being able to focus in on them. Thanks for sharing your experience!!

love this video! i just started in the ICU. i agree with the muscle memory. i do a lot of things much slower than my preceptors bc i want to make sure i’m doing it correctly. this video was very relaxing and you did a great job pointing out tips for new grad icu nurses! and yes, in a year we will be great icu nurses!!

David Robinson I thought I’d never do it, but ended up deciding to go for it! I really like taking care of fewer patients and spending more time with them. Did you have anything pulling you towards ICU?

Oh my gosh thank you for this! I’m going through my application process for a graduate program in the ICU at the major trauma centre in my state (in Australia). I have my final interview on Monday and I’m getting nervous - feeling a bit of imposter syndrome and worried that I don’t know what I’m doing enough to be pursuing the ICU. I’ve worked really hard to achieve a GPA of 3.9 but I haven’t had heaps of clinical experience in crit care areas yet. I’ve never looked after a patient with an NGT and haven’t even inserted a catheter! Our lecturers and other experienced nurses I’ve spoken with have said they don’t think it’s safe or appropriate for grads to be in the ICU, but these opportunities are popping up and it seems like a shame to turn it down if I get the offer… so I’m conflicted about taking up this opportunity.

I am a nurse for a Deaf school and we have a Deaf nurse and a hard of hearing nurse on our team. I have pre ordered a set of masks on theclearmask.com and am trying to secure some reusable fabric masks as well. Do you have any thoughts, experience, recommendations on this? Interested in opinions.

LilyAndBucky hi! The clear masks sound like a great idea. the Deaf/HoH nurses on your team are lucky to have someone thinking of that! I believe the deaf-friendly clear masks have the same ability to keep germs from spreading as the regular ones, but I’m not entirely sure. As for the fabric masks, I do know that fabric masks help keep droplets from spreading out of people’s mouths, but they’re not medical-grade. They’re still CDC recommended and much better than wearing no mask, though!

Lilly Paul I can’t tell you the exact residency program because hospitals like to stay private on social media, but it is in a big teaching hospital in Texas. I can make a video on residency programs soon! The general idea is that you apply for residency programs about three months before you graduate from nursing school. The advisors and professors in nursing school are very good at helping people find job opportunities and residency programs to apply to! They all have online applications, and different dates where you’re able to submit the online application. :)

@@liliannemadsa539 Most big hospitals have a residency program. Some you have to apply to separately but most will put a new grad nurse through their residency program if they have less than a year experience. You can find that information on the hospitals website under nursing.
