As a company driver that lives in her truck, I have found that for me, the key is outfitting my truck to live in comfortably. This allows me to keep up the break neck pace, and to enjoy my down time as it comes. Your creature comforts matter! Because even if you don't live in the truck as I do, you spend so much time in your truck, that for all intents and purposes, it IS a home away from home. Quality sleep is vitality important, so a good mattress matters. A refrigerator, microwave, and some sort of means to cook with (I love my instant pot!), saves you SO much money compared to always eating at truck stops. I have a washing machine on my truck, which saves a lot of money too. But, the trade off is hauling water to use it. However, I also use water to cook, make hot drinks, wash dishes. Walmart is DEFINITELY your friend! I have four five gallon water bottles, and refill them at Walmart weekly at the water machine. I always get drinking water even to clean with, so that I'm not having to store separate water. It's only $.40 a gallon. If you want Hulu, Netflix, etc... Make a friend or family member who has it and share costs and accounts. Amazon Prime is cheap, easy and convenient! You can watch movies, order things cheap, etc... Your mental and emotional health matters. Have connections with people, over the phone, online, etc... I play on Second Life, have Discord, social media, etc... Having a teammate, passenger, or pet can make a dramatic difference in your happiness. Make the choice that fits you best.

When I first started trucking with a company I was winging it. I quickly learned don’t do that lol. 6 years later I’ve learned how to properly manage my finances and own my truck outright. My only advice is to plan accordingly for how long you’ll be out running and invest in a coffee maker and creamer.

Best scenario IMO to be a successful O/O is to have a fully paid for used truck, have at least a 20-25K emergency fund that is easily accessible in place, and do a separate monthly budget for your business and personal finances. This is not hard to do with the budgeting apps that are available today online. Seen to many comments of O/Os using 10-15K credit lines to finance major repairs. Believe this will only lead to big time stress in the long haul. The emergency fund should be totally separate from your family budget emergency fund. It is not a matter of if an emergency repair will happen on the road, but when. Stay safe all.

Best thing I ever did for my finances was get divorced. From there I tracked and still do all my bills and income on a spreadsheet, cut costs, worked all the OT I could and in very short order I was debt free, and $$ in the bank. Like you said, needs vs wants.

Speaking very detailed spec for Brand-New Freightliner that does 26l/100km (9+mph), opening company, accountant, future companies. Crazy. About saving my first 2y as a driver I bought fast-food/truck stop food maybe twice, I have a big fridge and Im full and cook for a week and Walmart is usually eazy to access. Also always get brand new truck, almost eazy start for about 3y and 20k is also what my friends recommend bc insurance pays after the fix so if You are unlucky gotta have some spare money. Trucking is a cost accounting challenge. The better you are at controlling and managing costs, the more profitable you’ll be. I would only add, start using a worksheet on your phone or computer to manage your finances. As you create a better worksheet, you’ll create a better business plan. Even if you’ve never used a worksheet before. Maybe a future series on this Channel?

Learn how to break your pay down as a company driver. Too many drivers are getting screwed by their companies and taking the per diem pay rate which is less for you and save the company money. Also O/O not paying their taxes and using a CPA that doesn't do a good job with taxes and the P&L. Don't trust a girlfriend to pay your bills while your gone. As a former mortgage loan officer these are the couple of things I would see drivers doing. As a former company and O/O driver I tried to look out and help drivers get things straightened out as much as I could.
