While doing this gig, I love it when I find a product that legitimately solves and issue we have in riding and setting up our bikes. On the rare chance that I find a product that solves MORE than one issue, I get a little excited. That's how I feel about this one.
Check out the Ares Rear Brake Disk Guard. It offers great protection, is the easiest install in the world, and it's reasonably priced with it's competition. The only thing that would make this any better for me is if it was stocked by RMATV/MC so that you could buy it using my links. O-well, maybe some day. Below is a link where you can find this. I paid full price for mine.

I like that it’s easy to install and that it also provides protection for the axle nut. The guards that attach to the caliper do seem like they would be more solid against big hits but most of us probably aren’t riding hard enough to actually break this one in the video. It’s an interesting product and it’s cools to see people innovating instead of just turning out the same product with a different logo on it.

Clever idea there, but I think I still like the style you have already been using. One and done. It only takes a couple minutes to install and you never have to deal with it again. I also wonder about the leverage and focus of the force on that area of the swing arm when you take a big hit. That shark fin sure is thick and will certainly get hung up more in tight spots.

  • @rz350yam

I'll stick with the one you've been using. This new one sticks out too much and will get hung up on rocks. I have disk guards on all 4 of my bikes, and one look at any of them tells me how much they have protected my rear disk. And on the sprocket side, a good chain guide is a must. They take a beating if you ride any kind of gnarly rock sections. I live in CO and they call them the Rocky Mountains for a reason!

It fits in the pocket where the axel block is with minimal clearance and fits up against the bottom of the swingarm. I've beat on one for over a year on my Beta and no problems.

  • @human1513

Not sure if it was hit a few times hard that it would not rotate a few degrees which over repetition could loosen the axle nut. The black long frame has a gap between itself and the lower side of the swingarm. So if the fin got rotated counter clockwise (forward at teh bottom) a few millimiters sending the black brace up until it hits and stops at the lower side of the swingarm & then it vibrates or gets hit clockwise. Then it gets hit counterclock wise again (the fin being pushed forward) until the black brace hits the swingarm again,..... Repeat and spin, in very rough riding conditions Could the axle nut potentially be lossened over repeated bashing into the fin? Say in a hard and very rough enduro. Nice to see another idea though. What if it had a fastening, securing bolt threaded up throught the front of the fin's black frame and into the under side of the swingarm? The swingarm would require being drilled and a female threaded insert installed into the swingarm like is often done for fender huggers over the front of the rear tire on sportbikes. That additoinal bolt requires some way to get a secure purchase on the swingarm. Personally I avoid rocks and bashing my baby KTM 300 up. LOL. So the KTM one meets my needs. Plus not much rock riding available in my area.

Why touch something that 100% works without issues. Looks like an overcomplicated, bulky, not as effective design as the standard ones - also anchored only in 1 point. And from the standard ones, 7602 racing makes awesome guard - very light and indestructible (running for 600hrs already).

  • @otpipe

It fits right up tight to the bottom of the swingarm so you might have to trim the guard in that area. Or at least maybe thin it down.

$135 for a guard that attaches to my axle? That’s the same price or much more than an integrated guard that transfers big impact energy to a much safer area on the bike. All to save 10 min of install of a guard that will never be removed? I don’t get it.

  • @eriknash8783

I look at peoples bikes with rear disc guards all the time and I never see any strike marks on the shark fin. I'll probably eat my words and bend my rear rotor on my next ride, but I'm not convinced this is worth the money. I also, would never use the ARES design because it is no where near as robust as the direct caliper bracket versions. I'm not sure how people can't find the time for the proper disc guard installation.
