Making it a lot more realistic as well to why she does not speak while only being deaf! :D

Fun fact: In early storyboards, Viren lifted the shroud to prove to the crowd that Harrow is truly dead. It turned out that all this ambiguity left room for many theories, even that Viren put the King's soul inside the bird.

Ah yes, the plot point that goes nowhere. I kinda wish they didn't set up so many implications that something was up and then do nothing at all. Even if it was unintended, it was sloppy - as created, the show feels like it has a massive lack of payoff for this plot point. This is actually one of the things annoy me most about this show.

I had a feeling that you'd love Amaya, she provides some good deaf representation, she's a freaking badass who owns every scene she's in and one more thing I'm not going to mention that we learn in Book 3-4. Nobody spoil what it is!

Amaya is a favorite character of both my mom and I. My mom worked at our state's School for the Deaf for 30 years and is pretty much fluent in ASL. She was super impressed with how accurate her ASL was in the show. That, and she's a major badass.

Overuse of dark magic can cause internal and external effects. For example hair turning a different colour and corruption of the soul. Btw Amaya is their mother sister (Their mothers name is Sarai). And the translator is Commander Gren and he is like the sweetest most innocent character!

Hi, my grandparents are deaf and ASL has been a second language in my family. My family loves this show. Amaya is awesome! Our only notes though is that it’s a bit obvious at some parts that the script was written by a hearing person instead of a deaf person. Like, they wrote the script first and then asked interpreters how they would sign Amaya’s dialogue. For example, Gren interprets Amaya’s signs with hearing people lingo than what she is exactly saying. Of course, Gren could be putting a bit of his own casual interpretation on her words, but it’s still his job to say exactly what she is saying. “The food here is… weapons grade.” v.s. What she signed was, “the food is… hard like/same as a sword.” The words “weapons grade” would not enter my mind to interpret it that way if I was interpreting for Amaya in real life. I’d say, “the food is as hard as a sword” or something close to that. But I can understand Amaya and Gren would have their own army lingo. Where it was really obvious for my family was when Gren interpreted Amaya asking Corvus to “track” them. There is no ASL sign for “track”. She signs “follow”, (because that’s the closest synonym) but Gren said “track.” I get that is what she’s asking Corvus to do, but ‘to track’ seems so specific of a task for Gren to throw that word out. Again, possible army lingo. Gren is also super fast at interpreting! Holy cow! She doesn’t even finish a sentence before he starts interpreting for her! Wish I had his skills! 😅 Again, love Amaya! ❤ She opened a lot of doors for a Deaf character. It’s clear in the first three seasons that a lot of care went into thinking about how she would have to interact with the world. For example, she has to make people look at her, or she turns around when a light turns on, etc. But I was really disappointed when that care started to be left behind in the later seasons. Characters started acting as though Amaya could lip read everything. Lip reading perfectly is a myth! It is very difficult to do! Even with context, only 30% of a conversation can be undersood! And characters start to forget to look at Amaya when speaking, or rely solely on Gren to interpret for many people at once. I’m still mad that Callum forgets to even look at his aunt when talking, or to sign for himself to talk to her. I wanted to scream, “YOU KNOW ASL! WHY AREN’T YOU TALKING TO YOUR AUNT! INCLUDE HER!!” But I hope the care gets put back in new seasons. Sorry for the long rant, just hope people can be aware of these myths around Deaf people. Love your vids! Byeee! 👋

I kind of thought cutting the on-screen interpreting was more a case of Translation Convention: where it’s assumed that the audience is already aware that the characters aren’t speaking English, it’s just being translated to make it easier for the audience to keep up with. There could still be interpreting happening just off-screen, but as it had long since been established that Amaya is Deaf and uses ASL, after a while they assumed the audience would just, y’know, assume the interpreter was there and wouldn’t need to be reminded of that.

Just seeing the way Elijah reacts to what's going on, makes me excited for the future episodes and seasons. She really is in for a wild ride!

Amaya's here and I'm here for it, she's one of my favourite characters in the show and as someone who has increasingly bad hearing I love that they incorporated proper sign lanaguage for her (even though I dont understand all of it since I only know BSL :,)). If your looking for more shows I'd heavily recommend Good Omens. I know both Morgan and Mosco are reacting to them and I'm enjoying sitting back and watching them scream at the silly immortal gays. Its another LGBTQ+ one and its also heaven and hell so be prepared for another Hazbin type brain rot.

I glad you’re already noticing the diversity in this show, from the subtle equality with having both male and female soldiers, to characters with disabilities such as Amaya. There is so much representation in this show (as you will see as the series continues) it is brilliant

There were dead guards in the room. Aaron Ehasz himself has denied the Harrow in the bird rumors, FYI. He drops just as much lore randomly on twitter and if short stories as in the show. Like for instance, that elves use base 8. I.E, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 10, 11,12,13,14,15,16,17, 20... 76, 77, 100. A oppsed to out 0-9 base 10.

This is in some ways a spiritual sequel to A:TLA. Toph was blind, so this time it's a deaf character.

I love Amaya's character. She's badass and strong, and signing and being deaf isn't her whole character- she isn't put in this show to be the "diversity," She's accurately portrayed as accurately and authentically as possible. She is badass, kind and loyal, and deaf. That's amazing.

I LOVE the way the show uses ASL. Not only is she signing accurately, and with little nuances that are very American Deaf Culture and not just "word=sign" that many uses in media have, but her interpreter and his role with her is so good. The way people talk to her and the way he interprets is all very good representation of that. I do want to warn you to be careful when learning ASL. There are many books and whatnot that teach a more "English" version of the language. Others are rather old and a little outdated (especially when it comes to country signs). So check the authors and publishers of any learning material you find, just to be safe. But if you do learn, the show does slide in little bits of humor through Amaya's signing that don't get interpreted. edit: also want to mention Amaya saying "you know it doesn't help to yell" in reference to her being deaf.

If you want to see a series about a deaf & mute protagonist, I recommend "Ranking of Kings", it is a very emotional and extremely good anime, it is about a boy who aspires to be the king of his father's kingdom, but he is very weak and small (which is more shocking when you know who his father is). It touches on issues such as discrimination towards races, groups and physical conditions and other things that make it very emotional and sad at times.

Amaya is deffo gonna be her fav charecter,the badassness,the hair,the sign language...and dont get me started on the lesbian shit.

what I love about this series as well as ATLA is the give great representation with out feeling token and female empowered characters with out degrading male characters. The characters are all unique maybe a bit tropy but with individual strengths and weaknesses.

This is one of the series with the most visibility and variety of people that I have seen. Later in the series we will get to meet more amazing characters! I hope Elijah sees the whole show, I am sure she's going to love it

@@MichaelJW72 No, first Runaan's binding fell off, then he tied it to the message arrow, then he shot it to the dragon queen. Unless you were referring to Rayla's binding, which did seem to fall off a few minutes after Runaan's did. I'd attribute that to her distance from the site of the kill.

I love Amaya. She is such a good and correct presentation of a strong female lead character that is not defined by her disability or the fact that she's a woman. None of it matters to her character because she can kick ass without it.

Yeah, as someone who signs (to help me with processing since I'm autistic but not fully fluent) and has a few deaf friends, the signing is super accurate to ASL (even if it a fictional land) and how the language is spoken.

You should see if your city has a local Deaf chat. A lot of Deaf communities connect on facebook, and public social events typically welcome students/early learners. That’s how I got started!

A few factoids from the artbook: 1) The priestess Opeli was originally just a semi-generic "person who question's Viren" and was not going to be a recurring character. Later they decided to keep her. 2) The pillar in the center of the "playroom" in the Banther Lodge is not load bearing, as proven. Neither the artists nor any architects know why it's there... besides narrative convenience :P 3) The valley of Graves (where the funeral takes place) Is specifically taken from the Vally of Kings in Egypt, a real, and cool, place. 4)Gren, Amaya's interpreter, had the tousellability of his hair specifically planned as a part of his design by the artists. Point where it's due, he is very tousellable. :P 5) watch the credits. They have art bits too. Some of them are also story related, like watching Corvus' tracking efforts. Netflix tends to cut out before you see all of it so you have to keep an eye out.

I agree as well that I love that they don't subtitle her either, so if Gren isn't there to interpret for her you have to know ASL to get the full details. It's such a great little detail, and I can only imagine how validating that must feel to the deaf/hard of hearing community.

In later Seasons there are subtiltles, but your point still stands.

About sign language, check out an anime series called A Sign of Affection. The main character is deaf/mute.
