😳 What do you do when you walk into a room, trip up on the street or try something new? You think that ALL eyes are on you. That, as if it’s magic, everyone within a 5-mile radius instantly turns their head to watch your embarrassment, or just acknowledge your presence.
🤷♀️ Well - that’s not the case. Psychologists have researched this tendency and labelled it ‘The Spotlight Effect’ - the phenomenon in which humans overestimate how much they’re actually being noticed.
🙃 So, take courage in that NO ONE CARES - everyone’s too busy thinking that the world are watching them to even remember to worry about you. Start the ‘thing’, do the ‘thing’, even stop the ‘thing’ if required - because ultimately, no one will care whether you do or don’t.

thank youuu, i really needed someone to talk about this! so this isn’t just me lol. anytime im in a place with strangers, it’s almost like i want someone to recognize me regardless of if they think im cool or weird, and i always told myself that im self-centered and shitty for that, but i guess it’s just another side effect of the world getting lonelier. with the lockdown and all, the only thing we knew for two years straight was ourselves, and we keep subconsciously telling ourselves to get used to our own company, so now everyone’s disassociated from each other because we keep projecting our egos on everyone around us. that’s what i think, at least, i hope it makes sense.

It's wild right! Can't say I'm shocked though - it's delayed me from starting several things in the past too. It's encouraging to know that we genuinely just have a very inflated view of external acknowledgement tho!
