This takes me back to being a kid. The 70's baby were alive. You can listen to any station on your radio and there would be a hit playing. Today i turned 60 and rejoice in my childhood and the music of the era.

I’ve always loved this song. It’s nearly perfect. I’ll bet that Phillip Bailey was a big fan of “The Spinners.” I saw Earth, Wind and Fire a couple times and I think Phillip performed the first time. But the second concert, on the pier in Seattle (?) he was retired but in the crowd. But it was like Phillip took what the Spinners did and ran with it, and added that incredible falsetto. But when Bailey retired it was a sad day.

Incorrect. That's Norman Harris on lead guitar (SIP). Possibly Bobby Eli on rhythm guitar (SIP). Thom Bell (SIP) exclusively used MFSB on the recordings. Now the road band it could vary.

Did you hear it?!?! There’s either an extra note in the “I’ll be around” harmonies or it’s just more forward in this mix.. but WOW! It’s like the flatted seventh or the upper octave.. or something! Whatever it is, I am awake now and will be listening to this at least a thousand more times today! 🎶 One of my all time favorites just got better! Thank you Midnight Special!!

By “musicians” I’m guessing you’re referring to the singers? The lush backing track with strings and harpsichord is most likely a pre-recorded track from the original sessions or a special version (less likely in this instance) recorded for this and other television appearances. According to Wikipedia, this iteration of The Spinners included: Henry Famborough - baritone Pervis Jackson - bass Billy Henderson - tenor/baritone Philipeé Wynne - lead tenor Bobby Smith - co-lead tenor with the lead singer in this performance being Bobby (aka Bobbie) Smith (born Robert Steel Smith, April 10, 1936) Credits on recordings by Philadelphia producers like Thom Bell and Gamble & Huff can be difficult to pinpoint as often some producers preferred to work with the same voices in the studio and credits would later be arbitrarily assigned to the touring musicians, hired only to perform the songs. Not sure if that’s what you were looking for. This combination clearly was capable of producing magnificent melodies and heavenly harmonies!

@@kevin6667 Singers are singers and musicians play instruments The musicians on that album were known as Mother Father Sister Brother. Studio musicians from Sigma Sound. The backbone to every Gamble Huff hits of the 70’s. Look them up if you want to know who they were individually I knew a couple of them. Great guys.

@@RetroMusicMan369 where were you when I was working in a CD store, fielding questions from people with zero musical knowledge to grammy winning artists - asking questions like “I’m looking for the song by the singer who sings like the wind?” and in that time I learned not to be too judgmental about the specific terms they used as everyone was coming from their own history of musical education. While I appreciate you pointing out the difference between musicians and singers, in my personal case it’s unnecessary. It’s great that you know that the recording they were performing to was recorded at Sigma and they certainly had an impressive roster on hand in the early 70s. After watching documentaries like Standing in The Shadows of Motown, The Wrecking Crew and the very recent Immediate Family and others, often times the musicians themselves don’t necessarily have 100% accurate recall as to who was who or where on particular sessions.
