The one thing about this video that really struck me was when you said that to just add an electrical outlet to your shop, you would have to get a permit, costing HUNDREDS of dollars. Pretty sad state of affairs when a man can't do what he wants on his own property without having to pay THE MAN. Really sad.

Howdy Cody, I just wanted to pop in and tell you I've been watching your channel for a while. I started watching when I was still and Highschool and I've long since graduated and moved on. Your knowledge for forestry and homesteading has always inspired me to take jobs upon my own hands. Just today I finished hanging my first handle to a vintage Hults Bruks hatchet head I bought at a hand made knife event. It turned out amazing and I used all of the knowledge you shared with KZread to do it. Someday I hope to pass this axe down to my kids hoping it's still on the same handle. I'm going to be making a leather sheath for it later myself as well. Thank you for all the quality content over the years and remember to keep on truckin!

Hey man I hope you get to see this in your time of recovery. I feel like it's good to hear when you make a difference, even when it's not always necessary to seek validation but to find it, is nice. You changed how I go about life. I was stuck on how I'm going to continue my learning and growth in life. I then had a realization that your videos new or old make me so happy. So I decided to do that. I went on a limb and took on a better job to earn for a property to purchase. Moved to a place that I'm happy in and has some land. Built a shabby wood shed. Fell some trees and am clearing the area for better growth and future farms. (Property I'm renting is the place I plan to purchase) got a little tractor and trailer. Good tools a work truck, and non of it would have happened had I not been sitting here getting happiness from your videos. I wish you a healthy recovery. Dont rush yourself and make sure your okay before you worry about us. In the meantime until your back I will continue the grind of waking up, Working, coming home and grabbing my little speaker to listen to your videos, while I work around the property. Thank you.

As per your idea, it'd be nice for it to be an electro magnet with a switch on it somewhere or another type of disable-able magnet (like they use in magnetic lathe chucks) to avoid little metal bits constantly sticking themselves to the plug, but still be able to use it when needed. Also, once again, love that magnetic drill press.

Unfortunately, Aaron is right. Even in my small Midwest town we're supposed to. Can't say that it doesn't get ignored from time to time. The amount of regulation is asinine. You build a new garage and even though your 80 year old house always had gravel or rock parking. You now have to pave it to the road. I get that we need certain things in place for safety and what not. But really it's not going to matter if you have pavement where you park. Just prices regular people out of being able to afford things.

@@TORKSTEER So in other words you haven't actually looked into it, otherwise you'd know there's, state, county, and municipal level building codes in all 50 states and all US overseas territories. It's hypothetically possible to not have to deal *with municipal level* building codes, but county and exist everywhere. By the way: that's even before you get into how zoning restrictions in every state *also* affect what you can and can't do on your own property. There again, are no states without zoning codes. And very few counties without their own zoning codes. Again municipal level is the only place where you're going to find a governmental structure without zoning codes. i tend to keep neodymium magnets around to glue to projects like this, i have an old metal power strip in my truck that has a few magnets glued to the back of it for use with the inverter in the truck, i can pull it out, stick it to the fender for charging tools, running lights etc, and we used it when we went camping last time the camp ground had a steel awning over the table and we stuck the power strip to one of the legs and had our camp lights plugged into it and a fan, magnets are one of those things that either get overlooked or come across as a "gimmick" until you need them, and the metal quad was what i had in mind right as you mentioned it, you could even make it better if the GFCI ever starts acting up, get one that wires in line on the lineset going into the reel, put a quad on the end of it with magnets attached, then you've got GFCI protection along the entire cord, and a magnetic end box, stay safe brother

Take 2 of them welding magnetic holders (looks like triangles, come in different sizes) and epoxy them to the side of the box, you have your magnets. I have to say, awkward shape of that box, why make it so "tippy", they could have made it wider and flat instead and it would have stayed standing easier.

Borrowing things from the neighbors depends on time/item being borrowed and the relationship y’all got. My grandad loans a trailer to a neighbor whenever he wants. About 10 times in 40+ years. Never paid us by any means but helped whenever we needed it, usually calving season. Also this is near Yakima so should match your geographic culture.

Always improve what you borrow. Most recently i had some vehicle troubles, and a friend graciously offered a minivan for me to borrow until i got a new truck. I got it knowing it had some issues and swapped my battery into it to get it back and running. I had to jump it twice to get it home since it hadn't been run in months and kept draining my battery, but i had to stop and get gas since it was parked on empty. I also knew that it was in need of an oil change so i payed for 5 quarts of oil and a filter and changed the oil at home. I also fixed the electrical issue that caused the battery to drain and returned the van after i got my new truck and had it road legal, i e insurance and tag. She offered to pay for everything i did, but i refused. If i was just changing the oil and giving it back, than sure, but i had access to a vehicle to go too and from work and get groceries when i could have been stuck or had to leech off of others to get through my day to day life, and if anything I should have payed her. But she did not need the vehicle and trusted that the van was in good hands and that the vehicle was returned in better condition that it went out. You dont have to pay someone for everything they do, and you shouldn't expect payment when you yourself is receiving something free that you would normally have to pay for. And too this day i still do odd jobs in the hopes of repaying her kindness and to a certain extent would be happy to do anything that doesnt directly impact my own life or start costing me valuable time when something i need done comes up first that is more important. Go through life owing people something. And always have something to give, you will feel much better about yourself and people will look to you in need. Im not saying you have to give your life away, but saving someone from having to pay for a professional they dont know to do work that may or may not reach there expectations if well worth it and they in turn will be happy to help you if something in your life turns upside down.

Only borrowed something once from my neighbor (sledgehammer). Needed it only for a minute. The look on his faced when I asked to borrow it said it all. I took it nonetheless and used it. I made damn sure to clean up the top and Tung oil the handle. When I returned it with many thanks, he look at it as to find damage. I wished I had never asked. Since that day, I made damn sure I have everything I need for mine and my family's home. That sledge I bought still sits in the garage unused except when I remember to take it out to clean off the cobwebs. It's just not my dad's era anymore when neighbors help neighbors either on each others cars, homes, etc. No sir.

Flashbacks. I love a mag drill. They cut like butter, safety strap is a good idea but can be very dangerous as can the shavings. Pro tip is to keep those shavings shorter than 1”. Had 2 co-workers loose fingers. One due to the strap getting caught in the drill head, the second guy had a shaving snag his glove and pulled his hand in. Both had bad breaks and gnarly tears resulting in amputations. Looks like you were close with the gloves but camera angles are very deceiving. Love your channel. I respect your honesty and your willingness to try things outside your comfort zone. And your shop gives me an envious level of the fizz. All jokes aside you have given me loads of ideas for my future home when my bride and I get there. I keep having injuries that require surgery that end up killing the savings for a down payment. How about the same magnet the mag drill uses? There is already power in the cord and have a switch on it to turn the magnet on/off.

I lend stuff out all the time. I also had a company where I rented equipment. If I need something more then a couple of times I tend to buy it as then it works out better for me. I can use it when I need it. Don’t have to ask a friend or find somewhere to rent it. And rental prices have risen. I lend to friends nowadays not so much renting. I also rent warehouse and garage spaces. It’s the same with people renting or borrowing. Example with equipment and tools how people treat them and give them back. With renting or buildings how they treat them and leave them after use. I have a warehouse for winter storage. Then a garage with 3 bays for working on cars. People can use the garage by themselves tools are available etc.

I’m also working towards having a bigger workshop for wood working and then metal working. Then mainly offering to friends to use and will see if I rent to other people. I enjoy watching your channel. I the last couple of years I went from working fulltime to working partime and using the half of my time working at home on projects and having more time for family.

Swap that plastic box out for a steel box zinc plated, explosion-proof so it's got some weight. Then you can just use a set of loose magnets. The weight of the box will keep it steady in places like on the ground in a good wind. They make versions with the marine covers that open and stay open until you close them. You could have a super skookum drop line that won't get all beaten up easy and will hold onto a magnet really well. Hope you are healling.

Magnets on that box would be a great way to pick up all those steel chips you make while cutting or drilling… I’d scratch that idea…

OK hold on, you need a permit to run a few power cables with outlets in your own shop, next to your house? That's insane!

I was wondering about this.... Was I supposed to give a damn about paying government for permission before I ran a sub box for some 240v outlets in my basement? I have internet and electrician friends to design what I want to code or better.

What do magnets do in a shop? They colect every fileing and drill remnants in the shop! First you take the water sealed cap off your outlet, remove the GFI, then manetize it. Living on the edge, are you? I guess a broken hip isnt good enough. LOL

I am no electrical expert but here in the UK you would have to unwind this reel completely every time you put a load through it to prevent over heating and the cable melting. I am talking 240v though.

That Reelcraft cord reel is $600 on Amazon! How can you justify $600 for 50' of extension cord with a duplex receptacle on the end when you could get an extension cord thats the same thing for like $60?
