What happens if you leave an aquarium plant in the plastic pot? Cory shows some plants that he just removed from the 800-gallon aquarium that were all planted directly in the substrate with the basket still on. Check out this interesting way to grow plants if you want them to keep them from floating, don't want to damage delicate roots, and want to help with the conversion process from emersed to submersed growth.

    My only issue is that most of the potted plants are packaged using 2-3 individual plants and I would rather open it up and spread them out in an aquarium than leave them bundled together and have to buy more pots. It’s certainly a faster way to get that thickly planted look tho!

    Another idea is putting the whole thing inside of a clay pot. I have a tank that's meant to look like a flooded old garden because I had a bunch of clay pots from when I used to propagate succulents. I keep the plants in the plastic pots but then tuck those inside of the more aesthetically pleasing clay pots. Of course you have to feed the roots through the bottom of the clay pot and you also have to make sure it's a plain clay pot (not painted or glazed in any way that might leech into the water), but it can look pretty nice in the right environment.

    I completely agree with you, Cory. I have done this numerous times in my tanks. Hiding the pot behind driftwood or rocks is a bonus. The easy rock planter that you sell works well also. I go one step further and save the pots. Then, when propagating my plants, I often put the clippings in a pot with some scrap sponge filter pieces and root tabs with a small rock on the bottom for weight. It really gives them a head start. 👍

    Incidentally I had this experience. Have a 27inch seep tank so was lazy to wet my hands first planting some crypts. Just sump the pots. After about four months or so, one of the seam opened. While emptying the tank when i lifted the pots realized that they were firmly anchored in the substrate!😊

    I usually take stem plants out of the pot, but recently tried leaving some red ludwigia in the pot because I don't have much luck planting the separate stems. It's doing great. As the stems get longer I cut off a piece with hanging roots, and those cut pieces have done very nicely. This was the first time I tried leaving a plant in the pot. Along with what you said during the video, I think the potted plants do better by have an extended time to get used to the new parameters without a sudden shock. Great video! I'll be leaving plants in their pots from now on.

    I've always just kinda dropped them in a tank for a while until ive figured out what exactly i wanted to do with them. One this i really like to do, is once theyre growing well in my tank, i repot them! Ill use ceramic flower pots, small ones, plant them in substrate in the pot. Now when its time to clean the tank i just move the pots around. I'm also that person who always wants to be rearranging the tank and that saves me work caused by my adhd 😂

    I bought an in-vitro crypt cup at petco bc there was 5 bunches and it looked fresh. I waited too long to plant and they started wilting so I immediately just put it in a tank with grave (+ liquid dose) and now they are booming. Saw a new leaf after a month and I just let it be to see what happens. Had a new wood and new gravel so I didn't put too much nutrient in it bc I didn't what a algae boom (which still happened) but I didn't dose for a month or more and one day I looked over -and BOOM, it's looking pretty good! Some are more voluminous than others but still kicking along -they might be new shoots as they're small and scraggly and I don't remember plant that making little bunches. But yea, don't fear the crypt melt. Some ppl cut the leave off and the root before planting it. As long as you keep the root ball in tact, you will be good. Well, maybe leave a few of the tiny leaves for photosynthesis. I only regret not getting the flamingo cup too! It looked very fresh but I was afraid They'd both die so I only got one to test.

    I plant all of mine in jelly jars I fill with aquarium soil. Just make sure you fill the jar with the soil about 1/2-1 inch from the top first, then fill with water second and leave overnight to soak it in second then the next day insert the plant third and what I do next is put some of those glass disc things you can find at pet stores on top and the dirt will stay put when you put it into the aquarium.

    You can you do this with swords? When you say “stem plants” what does that reference? Just trying to get a handle on what to look for. I’ve always avoided them because I have gravel substrate, but if I can leave them potted and root tab around the pot, that’s would open up a lot of options!

  • @wheelbite14

    @wheelbite14

    10 күн бұрын

    You can, but swords will eventually get much, much bigger if they aren't stuck in the cup. They can grow massive root balls. Stem plants are usually defined in the hobby as plants that can be cut in between nodes, and the cutting can be replanted and will grow into a new plant. The army builders of many aquariums. If you look up Dutch style aquascapes, those are mostly stem plants.

    "for stem plants, I say yeah it's true" @@AquariumCoop after killing far too many plants, I started a "conversion tank" that I dropped all new plants I received into, and then as babies began growing immersed in the few inches of water, I would move babies/cuttings to my tanks. My conversion tank only has the bottom quarter deep in water, a sponge filter, and snails for algae control. Which I learned how to do from watching your videos on your warehouse. Stems I just cut into 3 nodes/stem, and float until they have established root systems, and then plant. For the first time, I have got really healthy buce growing this way during the pandemic, and no algae on the buce.☺️ Between your videos, and the Reverse Respiration from Guppysnail and dasaltmesology in the forum, and I have eco-systems growing beautiful plants in my tanks... and I intentionally keep loaches and Malaysian trumpet snails to act like little "ground aerators" to keep turning over the substrate and ensure plant roots are well fertilized with fish waste. Thank you! (For anyone who has read this far, don't allow vallisneria and other **true** aquatic plants to grow emersed, the exposure to air damages the leaf cells and will kill your plants)
