Ok, bc I wasn’t sure if you knew that it wasn’t only that the vocal line were also in the performance, it was that they were having fun singing a rapline song (which is why some forgot a few words lol). You know, I think you’d really enjoy the song Moving On. It has all seven and it’s about them moving from their small apartment and their history there💜💜💜

You need to watch Ddaeng explained by DKDKTV. This is normally sang by the rap line of RM, Suga and J-Hope, but this time they let the vocalists rap for a change. This was a great performance of Army there who get to see them do something different and how much fun and into it the vocal line can get.

There is another live where just the rap line perform this and RM is fire in that one! Also DKDKTV has a video that explains the various, many meanings of Ddaeng which, as a non-Korean, I know I would never pick up on. This song is word-play Genius by our amazing rap line from BTS.

I'm sure someone else mentioned this, but Ddaeng is indeed a rap line song, but sometimes they get the vocal line covering rap line songs just for fun for ARMY. If you want something else in the same vein, you should check out the live OT7 Daechitwa and Chicken Noodle Soup - both solo rap line songs that they then get everyone to cover. They are both fantastic and hilarious.

okay, here's the thing about ddaeng. you CANNOT listen to it and understand what it's all about, unless you watch DKDKTV's explained by a Korean lyric breakdown video. you simply can't. the word ddaeng has more than 7 different usages/meanings throughout the whole song, most of which are directly tied to Korean culture and expressions. in this specific performance the rapline lets the vocal line rap (most of) their verses, and it's hella fun, but i'd suggest listening to the original recorded version, then the explanation video and then the rapline only performance. this song is truly genius (especially namjoon's verse oh my god) and it's really a shame not to dive into it. you can do it at your own time if you don't wanna react to it!!

j-hope is my favorite rapper. I love that he's so distinct and has such a well-defined brand but he always manages to surprise and challenge fans. You just never know how he's going to come onto a track and he can do so many different things with his voice (both in the rap and vocal realms) so the variety is just endless. Plus, he's great at finding flows and melodies that hit just right. The musicality is in his bones so he just instinctually knows what's going to sound and feel satisfying to the listener. And on top of that, I've never seen a better, more dynamic performer. He gets on stage and you can't take your eyes off of him. And I LOVE his lyricism. Abstract, super complex, so many layers and such high concept--I always have to spend so much time with them to dig out all the references and catch all the details. I really think he's just one-of-one at this point. An innovator and an icon.

Ddaeng is an onomatopoeia. In Korean culture it represents the sound game shows play when the contestant has failed or is wrong, or it might be a bell sound that would wake someone up, different meanings. And, the fun of this version of the song is the rap line and vocal line have switched parts for the enjoyment of the fans. Another layer for the haters, our vocal line can out rap haters. Another layer to the lyrics, haters are part of their success because it galvanized ARMY to organize and work for BTS. Many different meanings.

  • @NanciBK

Another vote for the DKDKTV explanation of this song. This and other songs are complex songwriting with multilayered meanings that are lost in translation. For instance: Bae means Sunbae and Hoobae (elders and younger musicians/haters) and the chorus is referring to winning hands in a Korean card game as well as a bunch of other meanings of ddaeng.

This version of Ddaeng was lighthearted for ARMYs but still a meaningful one... If you've noticed the line/part distribution was done like this V1 (Jhope part) sang by Jimin & Jin (they are inseparable trio) V2 (SUGA part) sang by V (suga & v are both from Daegu - which is also known to have a very distinct/strong dialect) V3 (RM part) sang by Jungkook - JK admires RM so much that he declined offers from other entertainment agency & decided to go to accept Bighit's offer (which was not a big name/agency at that time) because of RM..

It has 5 different meanings in Namjoon's verse ALONE and he rhymes "Ddaeng" with "Thang" in english then ends it with "ridiculous" which is "Gaeeolttaeng" which sounds both like Ddaeng and Thang! Just to make it short, BTS pen game is INSANE. they play with words so much in their songs.

Aww, my Wrighteous Brutha! I love this, 'cause it makes it pretty clear that you are sharing your entire BTS journey with us, and not really exploring on your own. Not sure whether anyone has said this yet, but the video you selected is from BTS's 5th Muster in 2019, IIRC. Muster is a fan concert, and one of their signature things they do at Musters is that the vocal line will do a rap song, and the rap line will usually do some sort of a vocal song or a dance. Or sometimes they all 7 do what is usually one of the unit songs together (like this performance of DDAENG). Anyway, what I really wanted to recommend to you is that you check out the DKDKTV "Explained by a Korean..." video for this song. It gives all of the cultural and historical context for you to fully appreciate the cleverness of this song. (I know a lot of ARMY out there have a sort of love/hate relationship with DKDKTV, but honestly? It's one of our best resources, as far as understanding the underlying context of BTS's lyrics -- especially the songs from the rap line!)

You really need to view the original all rapline original version....and it's hard to choose between the rapline...they are all so good individually but really undefeatable as a rapline....

I think rap lyrics-wise, DDAENG, is JOON’s best-the wordplay, onomatopoeia, etc. Top tier. This song made me think he is Eminem’s level in the Pen game. Jungkook used to rap in their earlier songs. Maknae is generally gifted - reason why he is our Golden Maknae.

You're missing the genius of this diss track by not looking at DKDKTV's explanation video. There's so much that English speakers miss.

I’m sure you’ll be told by many ARMY to watch the explanation of this rap track on DKDKTV. I guarantee its really worth watching the explanation video on their channel to understand the real genius of the lyrics and the word play by the rap line. They use over three different meanings of word Ddaeng. You should react to the explanation video with ARMY watching.

I love seeing them have fun 😂 this is from a performance for fans only. Every year we have a celebration called festa. A week long drop of content until the anniversary. Then we have muster. Performances for fans only 🥰 they do special stages of old songs or do fun stuff like this. There is usually a lot more conversations and skits. Last year and the next few will be different since they are enlisting. I will miss them so much 🤧 Also, this song without help is quite hard to get fully for international fans. But I hope you had fun 🥰

Most of the lines in the song are directed at their haters, so in that way, it is a diss track, but ARMY loves this song because it allows us to diss the haters right along with BTS. It's kind of a celebration of the fact that BTS has become so successful in spite of, and sometimes because of, the haters.
