I Learn That the Skyline GTR Exists 🏁 HOW DID I NOT KNOW?!

Спорт

Patreon request from Dimitrious - a car that is completely foreign to me. Reacting to the Skyline GTR is something I never would have thought to do on my own, but I learned a lot, and learned how much I don't know about cars. It's a subject that I've always had a bit of an interest in, wanting to learn how cars are engineered and work. Let me know what you think in the comments!

My first awareness of the mighty Skyline was when Jeremy Clarkson did a piece about Japanese cars in the 1990s I think it was. Even back then the tuners were getting 1000hp out of them, which is an awful lot. The family saloon looks were deliberate. As Clarkson had it, it was all about function over form; 1000hp and a plastic moulded dashboard. Basically, this is what happens when you let Japanese engineers show off a little bit!

The Nissan GTR (aka Godzilla), dominated Australian touring car racing for a few years up to 1992, then turbo cars were banned from Australian touring cars. The Nissan GTR is an absolute beast, a masterpiece of Japanese engineering.

A friend of mine owned one. The kick as it accelerates is a shock. There is a tale about this, he left it running and dived into a shop. A thief took the opportunity to steal it. They spotted it needed gas. When they came to restart it they couldn't as they didn't know the code. My friend got it back in less than an hour with the addition of a tank full of gas.

It's good to see you here again. Very good topic for the video and very good recommendation,👍 there is literally a world of great cars that, perhaps, were not supercars, but that made history and that in America are unknown as the Citroen DS, the Mercedes Unimog, the BMW isseta.etc.

@Pedro Hernandez. It was a totally different car video from the one I saw last from Grand Thrift Auto channel about the British Leyland Princess. My dad had one, which I learned on. Despite being futuristic at the time, they probably never got sold in the US, not because they were a super car, but because BL had a terrible reputation.

Actual wing mirrors disappeared from cars in the 1970s when they were moved back to the front doors. The holes in the front spoiler were important for grip/reducing wind resistance/brake cooling. GT-Rs are very exotic but I’m sure you’ll find them at any good car show. I have to say that I liked the early 1970s saloon (sedan) looked like a real sleeper. For some really fast acceleration have a look at the McMurtry Spéirling all-electric, all-British hypercar (0-60mph in 1.3 seconds).😊

Before Fast and Furious got their hands on one of these cars, the previous Skyline GTRs had already become (semi-) popular in western countries due to a small game for the Sony Playstation called Gran Turismo (1997). (10.85 million copies worldwide) Along with a ton of other japanese cars many had never seen before, of course 😉 I've only ever seen one driven hard in the wild here in Germany in 30-ish years, so quite a unicorn.

Thank you very much for taking a look at the history of Nissan's Skyline GTR. It seems that he was confused because the car he was interested in in the video looked like a normal sedan type car. The concept behind the Nissan Skyline GTR is that it is a ``wolf in sheep's clothing,'' aiming to have both the appearance of a sedan that can be driven around town and the mechanical structure of a racing car. For those who look at it and think, ``What? Isn't this just a regular sedan?'', this is the kind of car that transforms from a sheep into a wolf and attacks you once you step on the accelerator. In Japan, the R32's styling is said to be the most beautiful, but it can't be helped that it looks old-fashioned from today's standards. At that time, it was packed with Japan's top technology and had a mechanism superior to that of Ferrari. It's a funny story, but at the time it was a legendary car, and it was said that the more you made it, the more you would lose money. Also, if you want to learn about old Japanese cars, there is an anime called "Initial D". This is a story about young people having a race battle on a mountain pass road, and I think it's interesting because it features a lot of Japanese sports cars.

Many may have said this, but the main point of the Skyline was a normal road car (looks wise and also road legal), but with the power of a race car. I remember there being 1000 horse power models - that is insane.

Welcome back and (given the time of year) Happy Christmas, SoGal! It's not surprising that even a car-centric nation such as the US would ban certain vehicles. There can be all manner of reasons for doing so: safety standards, materials, noise, pollution.... The supersonic airliner Concorde wasn't originally welcome in US airspace on such grounds, thus the precedent exists. Not having any expertise, nor (I believe) any more than your own passing familiarity with cars, I don't have any answers to your questions or recommendations of other models to feature in future videos, but it's an interesting topic and I'm sure others will delve deeply enough to give you the desired answers. Nissan used to be Datsun in England when I had a Datsun Cherry 1400cc, in the 70s. I suspect Americans pronounce lots of words different to the rest of the world. Just saying, no proof. Since 1999, Nissan has been part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance (Mitsubishi joining in 2016), a partnership between Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors of Japan, with Renault of France. As of 2013, Renault holds a 43.4% voting stake in Nissan, while Nissan holds a 15% non-voting stake in Renault. Since October 2016 Nissan has held a 34% controlling stake in Mitsubishi Motors.[8] Glad to see you back, Happy New Year.

Hello SoGal and Roger (stylish helmet there). My first car was a Hyundai, not being able to afford such as this but admiring similar styling. It reminded me of cars in US that I just got back from. After my company moved to the far side of a mountain from me and everyone got stuck overnight in a blizzard the I bought a brand new Rav4. After changing jobs and getting a girlfriend, both in towns miles away, a similar fuel price rise made the petrol unaffordable. I test drove a Subaru Impreza but for reasons of fuel economy bought a Ford Puma. One of the best cars I had was from my next company to get from Yorkshire to Hastings. I was expected to not hang around and it could shift. After this I was more interested in getting myself girlfriend and dogs on trips away, like to Cornwall, so went back to Hyundai for a seven seater. I have had a couple of cheaper runabouts since, but should I win the lottery, I would think of buying a Nissan Skyline.

to answer your questions/comments. 1--Q: "why haven't I ever heard about this car"? A: The Skyline was never sold to the USA. Nissan thought that it wasn't worth the money/time/effort to make the cars USA-compliant. If you imported one you had to legally make the necessary changes to it. Too expensive even today. 2--you noticed that the GT-Rs are not superslick and stuff. Japanese manufacturers always cared about efficiency, effectiveness and quality for their cars. Not beauty. Understandable, but unfortunate at the same time, because you have people that see the R32, R33, R34, for example, and say that it looks like any other old average car out there. It does, but the R34 was literally the most advanced car in 1999 when it came out (sold until 2002). It makes my blood boil. 3--Q: "should I know this car"? A: No. Your life will not change knowing about it. You will never see it on the roads. You will never drive it. But I bet that at least 1 of your nephews know about it and probably your brothers and maybe even your grandfather that was involved in the car industry. Just ask them: "Have you heard of a car called Nissan Skyline GT-R"? 4--The R35 is based on the Nissan 350Z wihch is why the R35 does not look like the R34 at all. Except for the tail lights. So, they took the 350Z chassis and the R34 systems, they futurised both and they created the R35. The 350Z is the mother and the R34 is the father of the R35. 5--Ford made the GT40 that beat Ferrari at the 24-hour LeMans race in the '60s. The GT40 was America's top race car at the time since it beat Ferrari. For Japan the Nissan R380 race car was its top race car that beat the Porsche. The Skyline existed since 1957, but the first time they put a GT-R badge on it was in 1969 using the R380's engine. GTR stands for Gran Turismo Racer. The Skyline was the first car in the world to wear that badge. Now you have Mercedes, McLarens and more that use the GTR name. 6--old American muscle cars are beautiful and majestic, but they cannot handle. A mini with 130HP has the same performance as a 425HP Ford, for example. Japanese cars never cared about horses, but handling and the systems they have. 7--The nickname hakosuka (boxy Skyline) is pronounced hakόska. 8--The R32 got the nickname Godzilla by an Australian car magazine, because the R32 beat everything in its path. Many people call every Skyline (including the R35) Godzilla, but technically, the R32 earned that nickname. The R33, R34 and R35 did not win much in races, because the competition like McLaren Porsche, Toyota, Mazda, etc. upped their game and caught up with Nissan. But it is a good nickname for a car. The Toyota Supra is known as King Kong. Godzilla VS King kong. 9--In the '90s, Japanese manufacturers utilised the "bubble economy". They spend sooooo much money on R&D and developed the highest tech out there. For the last 20 years not much. The '90s was the decade that saw extreme technological advancements in Japanese cars which helped with quality and reliability, of course. Even Jeremy Clarkson said in 1990 or something that the R32 is the best car he ever drove. 10-In 1988 the Japanese manufacturers had a gentlemen's agreement not to produce cars that were so be sold in Japan with more than 276HP to reduce accidents. That agreement lasted until 2005. The Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) was full of cars with 276HP limit. Funnily enough, the manufacturers put underpowered/detuned engines to their sports cars, but they built them with actual high quality. So, then the Japanese tuners could take the 276HP engine from the Skyline, the Mitsubishi Evo, the Honda NSX, etc. and tune them up reliably. 11-You asked if the JTCC and ATCC, Nurburgring, SPA and Macau are considered impressive races where the R32 won. Simple answer. They are the top races, yes. 12-The Skylines are actually just average sedans for the road and the family. The GT-R versions are the supped up coupé versions. 13-Q: "What is lift coefficient"? A: it is the difference in pressure created above and below a car's body as it drives. 14-Hyundai is from South Korea and it is pronounced "Hughn-die". Not Honda. Everybody does that. 15-The designs of the R34 and R35 look like Gundam robots. 16-Q: "fastest 0-60"? A: I think dragster 0.1s, but not sure. 17-There are millionaires that drool over the Skylines and the Supras. It is not just Ferrari and Lamborghini. Because even rich people now appreciate what these cars can do and why and how they were designed and built by these Japanese car manufacturers. 18-technically the 2JZ engine in the MK4 Toyota Supra is of higher quality and toughness compared to the RB26 Skylines have. Toyota built them for quality to compete with the European sports cars. Nissan built the RB26 to win races and then detuned it for the road cars. But let's be honest. The RB26 sounds so angry!!! RB26DETT stands for Racing Breed (debatably) 2.6 liters, dual-overhead-cam, electronically injected, twint-turbo. 19-the R34's wing is the most beautiful wing ever. More beautiful than aftermarket ones, as well. 20-people think that the R35 is not boxy, but the R32/R33/R34 is. According to the designer himself, it is a boxy design that they perfected for aerodynamic efficiency. 21-The R34 did not come with GPS. People just add aftermarket ones at the bottom of the console. It came with the MultiFunction Display (MFD) that was new and also electronic climate control instead of the blue/red horizontal sliders. 22-R34s nowadays sell for, like, $200,000 on average, reaching, like, $500,000. Rich people don't spend money on bull***t which is why they stay rich. 23-put woofers in an R34 and Supra and play it loud. No ratling. Because they were built well. The ratling you heard during the roll-races and drag-races was the loose tarmac hitting the wheel arches. Not the R34 disintegrating. 24-the best R34 colours from the factory: bayside blue, midnight purple.

Hi Sarah, certainly a nice car - take a look at kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqyCt6iQo5W8cto.html, which is the McLaren P1 GTR racing an Aston Martin Vulcan (both British cars). As regards to some of the technical details you mentioned - it is mostly to do with aerodynamics - anything in an airflow will have a lift coefficient and a drag coefficient - the lift coefficient is basically how susceptible to generating a lift force it is - good for planes, as the wings generate lift, but bad for cars, which need to stay on the ground, so for cars, the lift coefficient needs to be as low as possible, and in many cars, is negative (i.e. lift force in the other direction, which is known as downforce, which keeps you glued to the road surface, especially around corners. Drag on the other hand is a measure of the obstacle the car presents to the flow of air / oncoming air as you drive. The higher the drag coefficient, the more susceptible the car is to drag force, so the more power is needed to push the car forward for a given speed. This is why most sports and race cars are hunkered low to the ground and present as small an obstacle as possible for the air to flow around - frontal area and shape are key for this. Therefore, on performance cars, the sweetspot is low lift coefficient (and at high speeds, downforce), with minimal drag coefficient.

I can explain the "Illegal' thing... Back in the 70's lots of people started importing their own cars from Europe. Obviously the the car dealership networks didn't like this and lobbied the govt to make a law. And so the 25 year law was introduced, by which you cannot import cars that were not sold in America, until they become 25 yrs old, so as to not compete with the new car market. Nissan didn't make the Skyline California compliant, so never sold it in the US. I think even the R34 is 25 years old now and R35's were always sold in the US anyway. Also F1 is awesome, engines are interesting, and if you genuinely want to learn car maintenance, start with 'how to replace brake pads', easy enough for just about anyone & will save you money when you know how.

Normal Piston-Cylinder engines are cool and all, but Wankel and Gnome rotary engines are in their own league of awesome. Some people hate wankel engines, but they're wonderful engines when maintained well, mainly found in some of Mazda's 70's to 10's lineup, and a 4 rotor wankel engined car won the 24hrs of Lemans in '91. V6/8/10 etc denotes how many cylinders and pistons an engine has, in this case, in a V formation. You have inlines, V's, VR's, W's, and flat engines in most cars, or radial or gnome monosaupape rotaries in aircraft.

The Nissan Skyline GTR was banned in the USA because it failed to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, apparently. Hmmm, did he ever say why it was "banned"? 🙂 Anyway, I'm not much of a car guy, but my crack at some answers: The car apparently was top notch in its CLASS . IOW, there are MANY cars that can outperform it, but not many road-legal "passenger sedans" in winding-road races. And, that CLASS probably excludes more powerful engines and other things you would expect for a "race car" . For instance, even some production/road-legal "super cars" can achieve 0-60 in about 2 seconds -- see the Koenigsegg Gemera

The V in V6 and V8 has nothing to do with Valves. It´s 6 and 8 cylinders pushing up in a V shape with an equal amount on both sides of the engine... The RB26 is a straight 6-cylinder engine... The Nissan GTR is an amazing car and it´s an icon in the car world, but if you don´t know anything about cars you would most likely not even notice it. As the next step in your automotive journey, I think having a look into the Toyota Supra would be a natural step... That along with the Skyline is widely considered the pinnacle of JDM cars...

I followed F1 racing for almost 50 years but about 7 years ago I stopped watching it and went back to watching Sportscar racing and Endurance racing .. mainly because of how close the racing is .. and most of the cars are almost normal road cars that anyone could own ... which seems far more sensible and practical than F1 Cars.
