The “bully jock” trope came from Hollywood decades ago, couldn’t tell you when it started but it was really popular in 80’s teen movies. It’s really out of date and not reflective of how bullying in American high schools presents itself today. The thing is, is not too long ago “nerd” hobbies like anime, sci-fi movies, comic books, music and musicals were less common and would get you ridicule from your peers for being into something considered weird or lame. My theory is all the writer/theater kids that lived through that time period grew up and worked in Hollywood so they wrote their revenge into their movies by making the bully the popular kids, the queen bee and quarterback. Heathers is based off one of these 80’s teen movies by the same name, so it follows the tropes.

I mean, Heathers was a movie made to deconstruct and even mock those tropes that were so prevalent in the 80s by making of those social casts so egregiously absurd, to the point of ridicule. A teen movie to end all teen movies, that instead created a whole new genre of them.

part of it is also that even in some schools today with more prestigious sports departments, since student athletes bring in reputation and money for the school faculty will drag their feet on enforcing rules and consequences on them. This not only means they can get away with stuff most students cant but can also teach them that they are entitled to special treatment and deference. My middle schools big thing was track and field not football, but there were some kids on the team who got away with absolute murder.

Just so you know, unlike epic and Hamilton, which are pretty much exclusively song, Heathers has a fair amount of talking and various scenes between songs, so you won't be getting the full context through the songs alone. High School Athletes in the US, especially back then, where prioritized and protected by parents, teachers, and even local authorities to absurd degrees. They had no accountability or consequences, which lead to creating toxic, aggressive, untouchable High School Jock Bullies. The stereotype then bleed into US tv and movies as an easy Villain for screenwriters.

Just a heads up: The guy that give Veronica her Diary back is not a character in the musical. It's just a background guy that Morci decided to make a character to her version of the Musical, the one of the animatics. So I wouldn't really recommend her animatic of "Fight for me" if you want the closest version to the og musical 😅. They are awesome though! Don't take me wrong! Is just that Morci is narrating her own version of the musical (just modifications, like this guy being a major character) so if you want something close to the Broadway version, look for other animatics, if there are others, haven't seen that many. Keep uo with the good work! :D

Boons are sought from gods, Veronica is literally asking for a blessing from them as if they are actually gods. The Jock Bully trope comes from (at least from my knowledge) the fact that many student athletes were somewhat protected by school administration due to what they would bring to the school (i.e., recognition, prestige, funding). Which created an unhealthy dynamic and mindset in which they wouldn't be held accountable and punished for their actions. Steven van de Velde is a recent example of this (cleared to play in the Olympics despite being convicted of SA of a minor)

In America, sports unlocks a lot of privileges cause sports is huge in opportunities for both the student and the school. Image and interactions with other schools and the public usually take place through sports events like Homecoming, and students can earn scholarships and sponsors depending on the school. They're representing the school so the school tends to be more lenient so they act better in the spotlight. This usually goes for other extracurriculars and cheerleaders as well. Some staff luckily also use it to keep them in line. Because without sports, they loose a lot of privileges or simply scholarships and opportunities. So if they act up, they get removed of the team.

As an American in my experience athletic guys are usually jerks with toxic masculinity during school days at least. There are nice ones of course but even they were off put by me but I suppose fear isn't really like being a jerk but most of them were pretty rude in middle school. Cheerleaders weren't extremely sweet but they were one of the nicer cliques in my experience. The jeans girls were usually rude. The emos were nice but they talked a lot about inappropriate experiences for our ages. If someone sees this after a year remind me to share the highschool experience because this is just middle school. :3
@eyrune752028 күн бұрын
Your analysis is fantastic! Love how much music you go into and plot too. Very perceptive. The animatic helps too it’s amazingly good at getting character nuance across that isnt even necessarily in the stage production. You mention Sweet Heather (or Yellow Heather, or Heather Mac) in the bathroom shows hesitancy and compassion and you said that she might be the crack in the foundation (you worded it differently). And JUST the animatic gave you that and my god it’s brilliant because YES. We put up a production of Heathers in Iceland in icelandic and I played the yellow Heather (or sweet Heather as you dubbed her) 😊 so I love these sorts of reactions and analysis. It was years ago now tho, but still fun to delve into.

My high school was definitely not stereotypical. Media mostly shows schools being divided into cliches and maybe some schools are like that but mine definitely was not. The popular kids were also the nerds/band geeks/theatre nerds etc. and there wasn’t excessive bullying, just a fight here or there. Doesn’t mean it was great for everyone but it was nothing like I’ve seen depicted. But that just my experience.

Same here, class of 2016. The popular kids had their fingers in everything: sports, music, honors/AP courses, leadership. They might not have been at the top of every category, but certainly above average, and likely excelling in at least one. And they would often go out of their way to be nice and try to include others. They were the ones with the perfect portfolios for college admissions. I experienced and saw some teasing, but it never came from anyone you would consider popular or even well-liked. Edit: Also, money. I don't think it got flaunted at all, but I knew of at least one popular girl who had tutors, and another came from a family of 7 siblings with no apparent issues.

Oh I actually know why it's called Soccer in the US :3 the term comes from Association Football, an oxford student who was really big on shortening stuff coined the term soccer and the phrase was interchangable with football in both the US and the UK, eventually The US settled on soccer instead, unlike their mother country England who settled on football, and the US used the term football for American Football because that sport is a combination of Association Football and Rugby. I'm not sure why football is so popular globally as a term other than probably colonization and trade influence since some places also call it soccer The more you know :3
@softly3359

As for why football players kinda suck in so much American media: football is one of the biggest sports in the United States even in grade school levels with little league and high school football. That can make some players have almost God complexes when in school and some can be real jerks. It's also important to know that since a lot of media like movies and musicals and shows is made by people who weren't always at the top of the social food chain in grade school, sometimes they can internalize that and show it in their art when they're older

Not much you can do about that bar looking up the plot online or watching it I'm afraid.

The nerdy boy does not have that interation with veronica, the person that did the animatic added that detail and i really like it but i think that's not canon. Pdt. Sorry for my English 😅

The fact that you designate Heather Duke as 'Other Heather' fits perfectly with the 'no discernable personaity'. 😆

Also learn the last names or they're generally known by their colors, which a lot of animatics keep to some degree. The "nice" one is McNamera and wears yellow, the one throwing up is Duke and wears green, and Heather Chandler wears red.
Just in case you didn’t notice it, this show is set in the 80s! Its kind of important for the setting of the story

I'm musically illiterate so now I finally understand why this song has anxiety vibes, like you can never be calm

I love your analysis!! its rlly fun to listen to, i really hope you do this for more of the songs👀👀
I'm so excited to see more, heathers was the first musical that i watched and i love your reactions!

Just as a FYI, I’m not sure if the animatics do this but in the show you tell them he heathers apart by their colours. Heather Chandler (Alpha) is red, Heather McNamara (sweet) is yellow and Heather Duke (other) is green. That’s why some shots have the colours they do.
So with this animator she created more of a "story" for the nerdy kid who called Veronica a nerd, he's actually not really a character that appears other than as someone apart of the ensemble. Just a creative liberty.

@ForthwithJackal

I'm saying this now but most of the Heather's animatics coming up better be overwhelmingly Galactibun or MissyAsylum Otherwise what are your patrons thinking. ElementalFA also did some really nice ones. Morci is really good dont get me wrong but the animatics by the artists I mentioned on this musical cannot be beat. MissyAsylum for the fun and dramatic bits, Galactibun for getting your soul crusted and Elemental for that year feeling of teenage liminal existence

I haven’t seen anyone else say this, Heathers is color coded, main heather is red, sweet heather is yellow, other heather is green Veronica is blue, Martha is pink and trench coat guy is black. The artist just didn’t utilize this.
