    @@pretios475 That's why Pierce ordered the mind wipe. HYDRA could not allow Bucky to get any of his memories back, because the emotional distress and anger of realizing he was a captured prisoner of war would emotionally compromise him or cause him to try and escape. They needed him obedient and compliant- mindless basically. Wonder how often they tortured him like that. Probably quite regularly. He seems resigned and used to it, even though he's terrified of the torture at the same time. Someone even pointed out Bucky appeared to begin hyperventilating just before the electric shock began which signifies fear and panic.

    People seem to forget the amount of physical torture they put this man through. Not only was he forced to do evil shit against his will, but whenever he returned he was subjected to some of the most inhumane torment, and treated like he was less than human. And this went on for 70 years.

    Bucky mentioned in "The Falcon and The Winter Soldier" that the serum never corrupted Steve. I don't think the serum ever corrupted Bucky either. Dude was probably just trying to twist the knife a bit before he died. Doesn’t necessarily negate the sympathy Rumlow might’ve had for Bucky in the moment. Seeing it happen a few feet away probably would’ve got to him a bit, but loyalty to HYDRA’s cause and a HUGE grudge against Bucky’s bestie would plausibly override that quite easily after the fact, especially in a situation like this.

    2:40 This moment is just the nail in the coffin. It’s the one that always does it for me. The way his right hand is clenched and shaking, and the way his chest is heaving in fear, how he’s squeezing his eyes shut, and don’t even get me started on the fucking _whimper_ he lets out right before he screams. For some reason, it really screwed with my head for maybe a week or so but I remember this scene so clearly even 9 years later. Maybe it was the way he screamed, maybe it was the way he’s being put through this against his will, constantly until he is brainwashed enough where he obeys… I’m not sure but I so clearly remembered the, “..then wipe him, and start over.” It’s so etched into my brain. His screams are so filled with emotion, so guteral. Sebastian Stan is an amazing actor, and this is, in my opinion, one of the best scenes to prove it.

    He wants to cling to that one shred of the past he remembers: Steve. And they rip it from him because he's showing independence. Given how willingly he takes the mouth-guard, it implies this was a routine punishment for him if he appeared to be breaking free of the programming.

    This scene is so heartbreaking. It was all starting to unravel for Bucky but when it was about to be taken away from him again he couldn't even say no. Hydra brainwashed him that well. Imagine having absolutely no autonomy towards your own body and mind. Bucky was nothing but a killing machine. Sebastian Stan conveyed so much emotion and vulnerability by just those beautiful set of eyes, there were very few lines. What an actor! I'm so glad where Bucky's arc is at after FatWS, it's one of the best!

  • @ITSAULGONE
    @ITSAULGONE Жыл бұрын

    Bucky Barnes requires regular use of electroconvulsive therapy to keep his mind suppressed due to the strong effects of the Zola's Super Soldier Serum. The serum also seems to have regenerative healing abilities which help him rapidly recover from any damage to his body or mind. It is likely the reason why he remembered who he was again in Civil War after he was re-brainwashed by Zemo as it had been so long since his last ECT session. The lack of regular ECT meant that the effects of brainwashing did not last and his mind was able to "reboot" and regain its memories.

  • @sorryifoldcomment8596

    @sorryifoldcomment8596

    10 ай бұрын

    That's also my interpretation. For why he got his memories back, and also why all he needed was to get knocked out once in order to reboot/reset after Zemo triggered the Winter Soldier (in Civil War) just using the code, and nothing else. Seeing as simply losing consciousness did not snap Bucky out of the Winter Soldier brain state any other time (like when Steve chokes him unconscious at the end of The Winter Soldier)...and yes, while the falling helicopter injury he got in Civil War would have caused a pretty nasty concussion on top of knocking him out...IDK, just in general, seems unrealistic that Hydra would ever let Bucky do shit on his own & consistently expect him to return on his own, if all that had to happen to risk him regaining his memories & escaping was getting a good bonk on the head...especially when that's already an occupational hazard for the jobs they were sending him to do. 🤔 So, that's how I rationalize why even the Soviet Hydra agents who had & used the red book code _(before Bucky ended up in America & Hydra stopped using the code)_ also used ECT as shown in Civil War opening. Despite having the code, the Siberia location had the same kind of ECT set up, and IDK why they would waste time, money, & electricity on the machinery if they didn't somehow see improved results. (Plus risking compromising the Winter Soldier's fighting capabilities - he does need to have a lot of brain function...so if you don't have to risk frying his brain to such an extent that he can't function...why would you? So it must be necessary.) And this is why his interaction with Zemo had ultimately less severe effects, at the end of the day. I mean, it temporarily ruined his brain for a few hours, but he bounced back super quick after getting knocked out. Probably helps that his brain had already been thawed out for 2+ years, instead of being recently frozen (which can't be healthy)...but still. 😅 So glad I'm not alone in coming to the same conclusion...or for thinking about it lol.

    Bucky: Fell off a train, lost his arm, and was brainwashed as a killer for decades. Loki: Always felt like he was in a shadow, found out he was a member of a group the people he grew up with saw as monsters, allowed himself to fall through a wormhole, the man he once called father told him he should have died as a child, and his adoptive mother died after they had an argument. Nebula: Orphaned at a young age, taken in by Thanos, slowly became more robotic by her adoptive father every time she lost a fight, was always seen as the lesser daughter yet still tried to please Thanos, tortured on numerous occasions, and lost the closest thing she had to a sister. Sylvie: Taken away from her timeline for unknown reasons at a young age, was forced to always be on the run for years, and didn’t have any good memories until she met Loki. It's funny, I just assumed they normally do have a clamp that goes over his upper metal arm, but they chose not to engage it because it would crush & apply force to the area that's still damaged. Where we see them repairing the arm at the start would fall under the clamp...and the damaged parts could be physically affected by it & any damage could be made so much worse if the damaged/exposed parts get between the clamp & him straining against it. (Assuming a symmetrical design, of course.) I don't know how much damage is still left on his arm...but it must be some amount, seeing as Bucky punched the dude across the room while he was still working on his arm. They weren't done fixing it, that's for sure...and it's definitely implied that all work ceased until Pierce came & talked to him. But yeah, that was my theory this whole time. They needed to fry his brain before finishing repairs to his arm, but they didn't want to cause further damage to the arm in the process. Am I the crazy one? Can't tell lol.

That guy wanted to put him back into freeze but then the doctor said he'd been out of it too long, so it was presumably dangerous to put him back in immediately, ergo frying of the brain was the only way to make sure he didn't get his memory back, realize what they did to him, and potentially try to escape.

    The film by itself is already just a jewel of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this scene is classic and poignant. Not only do we get to see for the first time how Bucky has been treated, as this sub-human killing machine - a weapon not a person - but we also see that beneath all the regression and memory erasure and hypnosis, Bucky - the real Bucky - is still in there somewhere. Glimpsing his brother's face was all it took for the real James Buchanan Barnes to rise to the surface, nearly dominating is Winter Soldier persona and conditioning (I know they're not brothers, but they are close enough the distinction between that and friend is negligible). It's such a powerful example of how much he cared for Steve, and how close they are that he is rendered temporarily unable to fully operate as the Winter Soldier from just that small interaction. On top of Sebastian Stan's stellar performance, this is just fabulous character writing.

    Bucky has never been more of a badass than in this movie and it's starting to get on my nerves that other characters don't understand the winter soldier used to tear people apart

    Just the pure fear in his eyes when the electrodes were attached to his head: the most feared man in the world perhaps, yet he is terrified of the torture inflicted on him. If this scene was intended to show there was more to this Winter Soldier than it seemed, he he was not in fact just some evil mindless monster, then it worked. it also goes to show how strong Bucky had one been mentally and pyschologically. I recall there's something on that museum panel which said he'd been very resistant to torture the first time he was in that WW2 prison camp. So they had to resort to the most extreme form of torture to break him and then freeze him to keep him compliant. Even then they could not not allow him to go around for too long because he might get his memory back or try to escape, and threaten to shoot him at if he showed any sign of non-compliance. Its a suprise he didn't go insane when he finally did get away.

    Fun fact: the winter soldier theme was made using Sebastian Stan’s screams in this scene while being shocked and tortured. The composer distorted them and played around with the screams to make the theme.

    i read the scream used for his theme was when falling from the train in c.a. which makes sense cuz in anticipation of his large role he would have his own theme music and he had that sound bite

    This is why despite being a badass Winter Soldier, I would never want this back. Bucky has been trying his hardest to move forward without having the most terrible war flashbacks of his kills. Because of his super soldier nature, he probably has almost photographic memory and is able to remember things to the smallest detail. It is something cryofreeze and therapy could never cure.
