I Hiked around the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, (34 miles) in One Day!

Filmed Saturday 27th August 2022
Ever since about the age of 14 I've always wanted to know if it was possible to walk around the Isle of Sheppey in one day. Today was going to be the day I was going to find out.
I started at Minster Leas beach at 6am, hoping to get a decent sunrise but it was pretty much fully obscured by cloud. It was warm though, and not raining, so I couldn't really complain. The other reason I'd chosen this ungodly hour was to take advantage of the tide being out; had the tide been even halfway in I wouldn't have been able to pass.
After a couple of hours walking on sticky London Clay, shingle and sand, I made it to the World War I pillboxes at Warden Bay. For pillboxes that are over 100 years old, have fallen from the cliff and been battered by the sea for decades, they're in pretty good condition. Again, these are only accessible at low tide.
Next up was Leysdown where I had a bit of brekky and continued onto Shellness and the World War I bunker on the very south-eastern corner of the island. After drifting around a mile off-course I made my way over to Harty, then over some marshland onto Elmley Nature Reserve. Miles of walking over the open marshland ensued before reaching Kingshill Farmhouse where the second wedding I'd seen that day was getting ready to take place (the other was at Harty Ferry Inn).
I was then coming up to Kingsferry Bridge where disaster struck; the footpath was impassable due to high tide and it looked like I was going to have walk miles inland to get over to the other side of the bridges. I improvised and waded through some huge plants, climbed a barbed wire fence and got up to the road where I could climb down onto the other side. This was energy-sapping and took almost an hour but I was now almost in Queenborough where a Co-op was waiting for me. After feeding and watering myself (a late lunch at 4:30pm) I continued along the sea wall into Bluetown and then onto Sheerness. From here it was the home straight back to Minster where I arrived just before 6pm - 12 hours and 73,250 steps after setting off.

I can asure anyone who thinks Sheppey is awful - it is a wonderfull place to live. There are areas which aren't all that nice (everywhere has poor areas) but there is so much history, and so much to see here. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Housing going up all over the place, even Duchy Estates (King Charles) is getting in on it, with plans for a vast estate next to the A2 - you'll find out about it online. Thanks mate, my feet were certainly sore by the end of it! But with no elevation, no backpack, and decent weather, it was far from the hardest walk I've done - in fact I'd say I'd say half that distance on the Peaks with a daypack would be tougher. BTW which pig are you referring to? My memory doesn't seem to be serving me at the minute 😂

Thanks Stephen, I did the Island Run many years ago and it was only 10 miles or so across the island (along roads), as opposed to 34 miles around the coast! It would be very bad for the coastline if such an event were set up with multiple runners, the erosion is too severe and the logistics regarding tide times would be a nightmare! I'm sure other walkers have done the whole coastline though, I just didn't know of anyone, nor did my Dad who's lived on the island his whole life and is 72 now!

When I was at school they done the island walk me and my friends started at 7.30am and came in last at 11.40ish pm I think they only done it once in the 80s, I was born in the old minster hospital in 72 I'm a true swampie. Not evetone one made it the half way point was harty ferry and you had to be there for 4.30pm or you had to drop out, I done the island run both a relay with my school friends and I don't the full ten miles when I came 32nd, loads of people have walk round the island. It was nice to see that far up shellness it looks like it's been made up instead of eroding those pill boxes never used to be visible they was covered in mud. I live in Bath now but I was down there in Sep Oct and at the weekend.

A very interesting non-standard hike. 34 miles is a lot in a day, especially on a beach because of the slope and over sand at times loose rock. There was a lot of history and abandoned areas in this which was interesting. I'm too am still stumped how the stump got there. This turned into quite an adventure for you with wrong ways, having to turn around, often not sure of which way to go. I think I once saw a part of Sheppey Island when I was on a bus from London to Canterbury. Have a wonderful day!

As a kid I did ‘the island walk’ for charity, it used to be held every year. The walk went the other way (anti-clockwise) and it was a mammoth walk. To stop everyone getting stuck in the mud a Warden, the walk route cuts that corner off, but it was still effort! Me and my buddy shared a speaker from his headphones and listened to Run DMC for most of the morning. Many people stopped at the Harry Ferry pub (halfway point) for a pint …many never see the second half 😂 It was great to see that side of the island again, we’ll done fella 😎

Quite an epic day of walking. I have never been on Sheppey so followed the circuit with extra interest. I have passed the turn off on the A2 so many times and wondering if the island was worth a look. It is such a shame that so many people think that the more isolated areas of the country are rubbish dumps. Some of the earlier views over the estuary were really interesting with those big stormy skies. Blue Town also looked worth a look. Thanks for the walk.

Hello, did the walk around the island 60 years ago with my younger brother. can't remember the time but it wasn't as fast as you. It was summer and we took most of the day to do it and all we had were some jam sandwiches (as was the custom of the day). I think that we may have had it easier then you as the coast line was easier to access and we didn't have the population that they have now. We would find live ammo washed up from the sunken ammo ship, we would look but never touched, to scared too. We also found fish left behind in pools from the retreating tide. So sad to see all the rubbish, I never saw anything like that, only items left over from the war. Enjoyed the video, took me back to the long ago. Cheers.

60 years ago, wow! The leftover stuff from the war must have still been in good condition then! Love a jam sandwich! Yes, a lot of the rubbish is from houses tumbling down from the eroded cliff but fly-tippers have added to that. There seems to be issues with fly-tipping all over Kent for some reason. Amazing about the live ammo! They've only just taken the masts down from the Montgomery shipwreck, if you remember that. I guess from your username you're in New Zealand now? Thanks for watching 😄

Great video! The digger you saw up on the cliff is the exact spot where you mentioned the house falling into the sea. There are atleast a dozen daily truckloads of earth mixed with rubbish that are being flytipped over the cliff, organised by the residents to save their homes. It's an ecological disaster along the coast here, the beaches for miles either side have seen a massive increase in rubbish washed up in the past year. Was never this bad.
