I would personally write it out as Mister Bush Pilot
Years ago, and I mean many years ago, I was taking a break outside my shop (A&P/ IA) and watched a student practicing wheel landings with his CFI , when he nosed it over on its back. Neither were hurt, but that beautiful C-170, which I had just overhauled the engine, did the annual and painted the Aircraft was bent, not too bad, but devastating to us. The student owner, having spent thousands with me, was understandably upset. Making matters worse, there were student solos in the pattern and the airport stooges decided not to listen to myself and others on how to get the aircraft back on three wheels, wrapped a chain around the tail, down the aircraft centerline, and pulled it off the runway, twisting the tail right up under the cowling! Long story longer, I convinced the owner to sue the airport for taking a relatively inexpensive repair, into a write off. Got subpoenaed to court to testify. I took a model and used string to show how it should have been done. He won the case, and with insurance and case money, he was close to breaking even, but he was done flying, sad. I bought the 170 from the insurance company for next to nothing, and after setting up shop at another airport (management kicked me out, 😂) I rebuilt the 170, flew it a couple hundred hours, and sold it. I’m 75 now, and retired, but in my whole career, I never made more money from one single aircraft than that old Cessna 170. Sorry for the long post! And Mister Bush Pilot is great!

"Missionary" is a very important word in Bush Pilot. You can't leave it out.
@Jaden48108
Жыл бұрын
It's an interesting story with a warning attached to it. The warning being third party risk is no joke.
That's funny to see a pilot with 3,000 hrs smile when he does his first landing in a different airplane. Nice landing...BTW!
Personally, I hope you don't change the name of the channel. You're a missionary pilot. You don't need to hide that or apologize for it. There will always be young kids who are interested in Missionary aviation who will (have) find you by searching "Missionary Pilot". In fact, that is how I found your channel. For me (and I assume others as well), your content is interesting not just because of the location or the type of flying, but for what you do and why you do it. Either way, I'll keep watching.
@777rogerf

The large number of missionary videos will presumably still be there, so it is not an either-or issue.
It would be nice to hear a plug in every video for the mechanics at JAARS and MAF and other missions organisations who kept your airplane safe for you. They are barely making it and could never afford their own airplane.
What an awesome teacher. He gave confidence where needed and didn't do anything to add stress to it. Fantastic job! As to your idea about changing the name, it makes sense. Missionary is limiting if you want to expand. In my humble opinion, go for it considering it makes sense.
@slidewaze

I was going to write the same thing! Inspiring and fun!
No Ignition , Condition or any of that NG stuff here just good ol Stick and Rudder flying with a pencil and Chart and a stop watch.
Great video. Looking forward to seeing more (and the new plane) in the future. Mr. Bush Pilot works for a new name. Did you by chance consider just dropping the "ary"... Mission: Bush Pilot would have a nice ring to it... maybe. 🙂 Anyway, all the best.
My Father was involved with MAF, I remember him spending time up in Papua..... he was a pilot and aviation safety expert and writer. I think I may have a collection of MAF's old magazine somewhere. I think he spent more time on taildraggers than conventional...Charlie Alpha Sierra was a wonderful C170 that he had use of, from DCA, to expedite his role as air safety investigator and writer of the "Crash comic" - The Aviation Safety Digest... I spent many happy hours as a child in that aircraft.
Full respect to this instructor , what a professional, so nice to see :)
Your experience in the Super Cub was much easier than mine in a 1946 Aeronica 7AC Champ. You had the luxury of flaps. The 7AC Champ didn't have flaps & no electric - anything. You propped it to start it 🙂
When I was growing up it was called "furlough," so now it's "home assignment." You are a bush pilot, so the potential name change is truthful, and I understand your marketing logic. That said, you are a missionary. Personally , I'll watch either channel name. It'll be fun following you this year, and when the time comes you're back in PNG. What you've been doing there is important, even with "diminishing" pay. :)
@davidpeters8813

Agreed, I'll follow either one, but don't ignore the "missionary" part - God's work is more important than marketing.👍
@B4DWrath

Can't be "diminishing" very much if, in this time of inflation, he's planning to buy an airplane.
Love the Super Cub. I never rode in one, but I did have a ride in a Clipper, owned by a guy on my paper route. The Clipper was a couple generations removed from the Cub / Super Cub, but still with very much of a 1940s feel. As for the name change -- none of my business. You do what you think you need to do. Those of us who know you, we already know who and what you are. When the name change comes, I'll still be a subscriber.
Ryan your authenticity and enthusiasm will keep your subscribers interested and engaged in this 'off year,' no matter what name you decide on for this channel. Thanks for all you do both in the missionary field as well as a video content professional.
I hear you on the "missionary" thing. The default connotation is "proselyting" and it really misses all of the service work that missionaries do (full disclosure: I was a missionary years ago for a different faith that I have since disavowed, so I understand the perspective). To me, "Mr. Bush Pilot" is acceptably bland and might make it easier to get financial backing, but I wonder if there's another option out there that might preserve the connection to your family's service and still offer some flexibility for your business interests (the switch panel, sim courses, and so forth). Anecdotally, the more successful pilot vlogs tend to have their channel names have a personal touch, so maybe BushPilotRyan might be more enticing to new viewers and sponsors (and it'd be a cinch to incorporate the BPR acronym into your logo). Just a thought. Good luck with the plane purchase!

@BruceCarbonLakeriver
Жыл бұрын
Yep I'd agree and I just saw he doesn't changed the name :)
As a pilot, I watch a lot of various channels. That said, what attracted me originally to this one was the handle use. Period. "Missionary" adds more to the flying than just someone making a salary. And that possibility is what attracted me to start watching. And I am glad I did. Your brand is all about what you do, both in and out of the aircraft. So, if that makes some folks shy away, I'm thinking they weren't good for you anyway. Will support you in either way, but my thought is to stay what you are.
I like the new name and agree that it will help with possible business goals. Being a missionary is in your heart, not in your name.

Every day is a chance to learn something new!
Hey Ryan, The name change is perfectly fine with me. Do what is best for you and your family. Those of us who know you and have followed you know what kind of stand up guy you are and that you are an outstanding pilot and teacher... I will be one of the first to subscribe if you make the change.
Hi Ryan I flew as a passenger with Doug in Venezuela, cool to see. I have never been to McNeal yet
It's really great to meet Doug, a missionary bush pilot master. I'm sure Doug could tell a lot of stories about early bush flying with the Cessna 185. Thank You Doug for your willingness to serve. Ryan, you are a natural flying a tail wheel aircraft. It seamed odd seeing you fly a 1950s Piper Super Cub with no digital technology. That Super Cub is a beautiful airplane for sure. It was great to see Ethnos 360 home base as well. Thanks Doug and Ryan! Really awesome to see two great Missionary Bush Pilots together.
Interesting how quickly a highly experienced pilot becomes comfortable flying an unfamiliar aircraft. The CFI was excellent too.
That was really fun to watch, and it looked like you were having a great time Ryan. Your first landing looked picture perfect. I learned to fly in a brand new PA-38 Piper Tomahawk; it even had the "new airplane smell." lol! After I soloed, I transitioned to a Cessna 150E, the last year for the straight vertical stabilizer and mechanical flaps. The technique that Doug had you practice with pulling in flaps on takeoff was pretty much a standard procedure in the 35-40C heat where I learned to fly. I used to tell people it was like hitting the up button in an express elevator. Of all the planes I've flown, that old orange & white C150 holds a special spot in my heart. If you change the name of the channel I respectfully suggest you spell out Mister instead of using the common abbreviation. Visually, it has a similar appearance as the word Missionary. Just a thought... Keep us posted on your new airplane... that sounds like a bunch of fun!

Mr Bush Pilot sounds good too, we already know where your heart is brother.
The lifestyle of a Bush Pilot, is a mission related to acts of service. Mr. Bush Pilot sounds great.
Really enjoyed this video! I have a 1946 Aeronca Champ . . .no electrical . . . I tie down the tail and prop it . . . . just me . . . and my self . . . rarely do I take anyone with me . . . big, big "stress reliever" . . . . Been flying for over 50 years . . . Peace.
Mr. Bush Pilot name sounds like a smart move. I'll watch whatever you call it. All the best...
He signed you confirmed, imagine that, congrats. I agree totally in changing the title, I understand how the world thinks. You need to do what is best for you and your family now, and from this family we support you. God bless. 🙂
That's "Mr Bush Pilot" to you! 🤣 Congrats on getting the endorsement, taildraggers are a lot of fun. You should fly a 150HP Citabria - I got a few hours in that plane. 👍 My father-in-law is a pilot and instructor, and was in PNG for many years also. He says that pilots should learn to fly in a taildragger before transitioning to a nosewheel as it develops really good skills.
3 minutes in and this is already one of my favorite videos of yours!! You’re a down to earth dude and it cones though vividly. Especially in this video!
No I would not change that name. It is very cool to see how many people I know that hear of you and then learn about being a missionary pilot like you. It has opened a lot of people up to this kind of thing and it is even sometimes just in conversation because they use your name.
Do whatever you feel with the channel name Ryan but continue sharing all that beautiful aviation content! That’s what I’m here for!😉👌🏽
Love that Super Cub and your check ride. What a terrific instructor Doug is. Mr Bush Pilot, I guess, will be fine. I personally like the Missionary moniker, but totally understand. Best of luck going forward and I look forward to your postings!

In a previous life I did a lot of branding and naming, especially of television program titles. My take is that "Mr. Bush Pilot" is absolutely perfect, and the way to go forward. Way to go ! And it still perfectly defines what you do when flying in PNG or other remote venues. So, grab the title now on all digital platforms.
I get the name change and business side of it. One thing to keep in mind and never forget is the Reason for this. Keep Him first in all you do
Awesome video!! Mr. Bush Pilot sounds like a great name. I think having Bush Pilot in the name will really help with search engine optimization. Excited to see new video content of your plane purchase and all the adventures to follow.
Yes, I think Mr. Bush Pilot is a great channel name, and it makes it seem more open to everyone. Great video, and I am so happy for your new tailwheel adventures.

It makes sense to change the name to Mr Bush Pilot. God bless this new journey
Man that looks like fun. First plane ride I ever had was in a Cub, flown by my uncle.Not sure why I haven't subscribed, but I have now. I enjoy your videos, you take flying seriously and yet still find the joy in it. I'd fly with you anytime.
Fantastic instructor and a beautiful Cub! Hope you and the family enjoy your time stateside. Love what you're doing with Ethnos.
You have paid your dues, developed a following, you have a great presence online, changing the name won't change who you are and the life you live ... go for it and great success and blessings.
Keep up the great work! Mr. Bush Pilot gets a thumbs up from here. All the best!
Nice work brothers, God Speed!
I learned how to fly in a PA-18 off an 800 foot dirt strip at the family ranch, been flying a 1948 Globe Swift that is fantastic, but she's a pavement princess...sure do miss that backcountry flying! I'm not sure about the name Mr. Bush pilot, not to be offensive, but it denotes seniority. There are a ton of guys with KZread channels flying backcountry for many years in tail draggers like the entire Flying Cowboys group and legends like Mike Patey. What ever name you choose, I'll still follow you! Thanks for all the great content!
Onwards and upwards, Stay strong and fly safe, Mr Bush Pilot 🙂

Nice video, nice landing. I saw the way you quickly added a little nose down push on on your first take off like you usually do on the Kodiak. Congratulations on accomplishing one of your set goals. Missionary Bush Pilot vs Mr. Bush Pilot who cares, just keep doing what you love to do and have to do to keep it going. You might want to consider keeping the name Missionary Bush Pilot for future or history's sake or if you have plans of building a brand out of it later on. I wish you all the best in your plans and may you get every support you need. Cheers Ryan.
I like the name change Ryan. Also, enjoyed the video. Love the Cub. Looking forward to seeing your plane! Fly Safe!
Im glad that you kept the name as it is.
I love this channel and I love the name--that's what drew me to it in the first place. Curious: Have you had backlash from a lot of people due to "Missionary" in the name? I know there will always be some who can find something to complain about. But, I mean each flight you're on is a ''Mission" so is it really that limiting? I'll support whatever decision you make, because your channel has improved my flying and made me more safe--but if I was voting, I'd stick to the present one--sets you apart (Ps 4:3?) from many other channels. I did like one of the suggestions from another subscriber who suggested: Bush Pilot on a Mission or something like that.

Nothing wrong with Mr.Bush Pilot but I do second the Bush Pilot on a Mission. It does sound cool :) I have to say the word MIssionary did put me of before I watched the videos. There are all kinds of missionaries all around the world and not all of them nice.

Thank you, Ryan. Good luck in your plane hunting, Mr Bush Pilot.
MBP RYAN, ILL GO WITH MR BUSH PILOT ! No problem. God BLESS YOU ALL, STAY WELL, 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Oh my brings back memories from my youth in the mid 80’s I was a CFI for tail drager flying club doing tail wheel endorsements in a J3 a Super Cub and an Aeronca Champ. Minimum insurance requirements were 10 hours some were good in a couple of hours others I would suggest a few hours in a Cessna so I could remove a lot of bad habits and then go back to the Cub. Oh what fun that time of my life was.
Good luck on your journey. I can’t wait to see what you do next. 👏
