I have Oil in the Boost Pipes on my VW 2.0T....is this Normal?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This question was asked on the AskDAP Show Episode 7. Q. My girlfriends 2.0t FSI MK5 GTI has been smoking. It has a new turbo and rear PCV. It still has oil building up in the boost pipes could this be the front PCV valve? I purchased one from Rock Auto about 2 years ago. Could it be bad?

To everyone having this problem. It is caused by a bad valve cover. There are baffles inside that separate oil and pcv gasses. The baffle becomes loose and the PCV will then suck actual oil instead of oil vapor. This oil then ruins the diaphragm in the PCV/breather assembly. Do not delete/blockoff or catch can your FSI motor. These have a lot of pcv gasses and need vacuum from the manifold at idle. So replace the valve cover and PCV, your oil burning and smoking will go away.

Smoking on decel and sometimes at idle, never at WOT and never when on the throttle. Previous owner blocked off the pcv with expansion plugs and it was fine for about 4 months until it started to get warm and now it smokes just about every time I drive it. I did a catch can and block off which reduced the smoke a lot, but didn’t completely fix it

@@taylorvaughn5206 WAY WAY past time for an answer, but maybe someone will stumble across this and it will help them. This is because your car's ENTIRE PCV system is required to run correctly. The lack of PCV valve is the root cause. The smoke is from oil getting pulled up past the piston rings during decel. This car has had poor oil change interval maintenance it sounds to me. The rings are carboned up and sticking. I will assume this car had a slight knock at idle after it warmed up and especially after city driving. That was the piston slapping back and forth in the bore. the rings get stuck then un-stick themselves at some point and the knock goes away.

Installing a self tapping screw to the bottom of the hot side charge pipe (left side) leading to the intercooler works perfectly and allows you to quickly empty the intercooler when doing an oil change. I learned this from an Audi technician.

Okay, update on my MK6 and the turbo. It turns out that A) the mechanic I had to go through doesn't usually work on Volkswagens and B) doesn't know much about VDubs. I had a boost sensor go out, and the following week it failed again. It took 4 trips for the mechanic to finally hook up to a smoke machine and they located a crack in a well hidden spot on one of my pipes. My car had slowly been bleeding for 3 months. Pipe and sensor fixed. The mechanic then observed some play on the outer rocker arm of the waste gate shaft. The play requires effort to observe, it's not loose, and they didn't know if that was normal or not. I looked at another MK6 turbo and the rocker arm has a tiny bit of play if you move it. The play doesn't exist without moving it. Anyway. The mechanic didn't know how to properly work on Volkswagens and after 4 trips, the cause of the excess oil was from a boost leak.

Question: i’ve got a mk6 gti (2013) i’ve replaced the pcv valve upper & lower(mechanic had a lightly used one on hand) and i installed a boost gauge on my car, it’s been about a week & i’ve noticed oil coming up the line about 6inchs up… could this mean i need to replace the pcv valve again? or is my engine kaput😂 thanks in advance guys!

I never really understood how a PCV valve could go bad.... it's just a check valve diaphragm.... crankcase pressure vents into the valve cover combined with the Turbo vacuuming through the rear pcv they're both just check valves on the front and rear PCV...the only fix for this particular issue is a catch can. and some people have reported that they feel like there's vacuum pressure loss when added.. I dont quite see how.... the major problem I see is that oil Vapor burns up plugs faster than normal and probably prematurely fails cats plus leaves a dirty sooty exhaust.. not to mention if you don't change your oil frequently and it gets too low

I didn't ask the right question. I got the answer. It was my intercooler piping/hoses getting oil accumulation and according to the mechanic is totally normal for an MK6 GTI 2.0 TSI

I have a question, I'm noticing oil buildup on the OUTSIDE of the bottom inlet hoses. If you have the car on a lift, those bottom hoses close to the radiator has oil buildup. My mechanic wasn't sure and changed the PCV but there is still oil residue on the actual hoses themselves. It's not enough leakage to cause leakage, as in oil pooling under the car, but there is enough oil outside the hoses that you can wipe it away (it's all crusty and dirty) and I'm getting conflicting information. Is it normal for some oil to be on the outside of the hoses for a VW GTI MK6? I've searched and don't know if I'm doing a search on the right things. The mechanic said it was normal (he got a 2nd opinion) and the actual hoses are fine and aren't leaking. I should note that the oil build-up Is right in the middle where the inlet hose connects to the other. Basically, I have a very small amount of oil building up in the inlet hoses where they are fastened and want to know if this is normal for a TSI 2.0 Turbo. Any help is appreciated. It's been to the mechanic and he couldn't find anything causing the minor oil caking.

Deutsche Auto Parts it's okay. I went and had it flashed APR stage 1 and the oil is accumulating on my intercooler piping and not my inlet hoses and the mechanic who flashed it said that it's perfectly normal for oil to accumulate on the intercooler piping on the front.

Garth Vader I also have oil accumulating there. Have ran my car with stage 2 when I first got the car 2008 till now. Have not had any issues of oil consumption. I have changed the PCV valve 3 times and the valve cover gasket 2 times. My car has 97k miles and has full stainless 3inch Revo exhaust. Cheers from Tennessee.

It needs a new chra.. valve seals will cause smoke but they won't go back to the turbo tubes.... the valve cover design has baffle maze which is supposed to filter the oil out pcv vapor...its not good on these cars .... so some oil will always get passed into the turbo.... it's an emissions deal..... but if you are getting a lot of accumulation of oil consistently in the turbo tubes after you drain it... the seal on the cool side of the turbo is leaking..... mine would lose a quart maybe eight hundred or so miles and blow smoke if I boosted it hard right when I shifted

Uh oh. I have a mk7 1.8 with stage 1 tune and just replaced turbo with supposed 16k mile used oem turbo and i get a nice cloud of smoke under boost occasionally but i just replaced pcv with $50 aftermarket one. So im not drivin it til my tuner sends cable for remote tune. Hopefully that turbo isnt already bad. Hopin its just the cheapo pcv leaking oil in to intake pipe burning out the exhuast. Any input would be great.

What about water in a cjaa intercooler? Is there a drain on intercooler or the piping?

Self-tap screw to the bottom of the hot side tank of the intercooler. It works FLAWLESSLY and allows you to quickly empty the inter cooler when doing an oil change. If you have lots of water, I would worry about a leak or VERY short trips in a 90+ humidity cool places, like Scotland.

@@raptor9926 i have done head gasket, fuel injectors and timing kit and stuff so i did have to get the head out and we thought it was cause we moved everything from their spot, i found out it was the oil pump thing where it connects to the exhaust cam from the left side of the engine (where the air intake is). Apperantly the gasket moved when we put it back on, so what we did was just put some oil rtv on there and slap her back on and now it doesnt leak oil. I have had way too many issues with this mk6 gti to begin with, its come a long way in 5 months😂 if u want dm me on ig, brrannv

Hello! Anyone know about this !! I have a 2012 gli and start to losing oil ! I removed the lines from PCV valve and has a lot oil in there! Most oil in the rear line ( pipe air filter to turbo ) I removed the air cooler pipe before intake manifold and dropped a lot oil , anyone know about this problem !!also the hose (PCV to intake has oil too)

Hello Jesus, were you able to find an answer to your question? I'm currently working to resolve an identical issue with my '12 GLI that I stumbled upon when installing a GFB DV+. The diverter valve and connector were full of oil and now I'm trying to figure out if the PCV valve is the sole culprit.

@@MK6_GLI over a year later, I will assume this was solved, but for later readers : Oil in boost pipes of any FSI / T(F)SI 2.0L VW, Audi, ect. Totally normal to find "some" accumulation between oil changes. adding a self tapping screw to the bottom of the intercooler tank on the "hot" side that you can access during normal oil changes is a very good way to measure the amount, and more importantly, the change in oil over time. If you have more than say .25 QT every 10K miles I would check the following things IN ORDER: Rear PCV pipe / valve (06F103215B) Front PCV valve in the front of the valve cover, for FSI BPY (06F129101P) Oil separator on the top of the valve cover on TSi (MK6+) (06H103495AH) Valve cover PCV passages I am not adding the flex tubes because you would not be seeing oil there, it would be all over the ground. :)

I'm not familiar with your car ie if your turbo system is oem/stock then this first part probably doesn't apply to you, but if you installed the turbo yourself such as oil feed and return lines then there might be a problem with the oil return being too restrictive, and not adequately draining oil fast enough from the turbo. Are you running an aftermarket ball bearing or journal bearing turbo? Ball bearing turbos usually need appropriate oil restrictiors in the feed line. Journal bearings 99% of the time need no restrictor, but do need adequate vertical drainage. But if your turbo system is stock/unmodified, then the next bet might be your PCV valve system being too restrictive. If you use a fitting that is too restrictive or a hose that is too small of inner diameter, the flow from the pressure in the valve cover/crankcase will build up pressure and push oil out of the PCV system. Those are some ideas to start with. And also, you want to fix this problem sooner than later because burning oil in the combustion chamber skyrockets the likelihood of detonation/knock. And having too much pressure in the crankcase (if that is the problem to begin with) can cause oil seal leakage from all areas of the engine if it is bad or prolonged. However, once again if that is the problem, and you can fix it rather sooner than later, the seals/gaskets may be able to swell back to normal and stop leaking.
