No one could ever convince me a delica in k390 is not one of the best edc ever made. For random rough, ranch work, I might pull a Benchmade 940 for fun, but k390 is my #1. It's been to hell and back. Color & blade patina is magnificent, too.

K390 is one of my favorite "User" blade steels. I love my dragonfly, ladybug, and delica in K390. I use them all of the time and am not afraid of making the blade look bad. I actually like the patina/abuse the blades show over time. It patinas very nicely and does not seem to have long term effects on the blade like pitting, but gives it character. It sometimes gets a bronzing effect on the blade. One of my favorite steels.

They call the color Cobalt Blue, I love it. I've got this version, as well as 2 of the ZDP-189 steel with the funky blade shape. From what I understand the ZDP version is supposedly for hunting, field dressing game, and the shape is to help avoid puncturing things that shouldn't be.

The mailman just brought me a leaf jumper in K390! I also have a Ladybug, Dragonfly, Delica, Endura and Endela, this one is next, I love K390, the edge retention is insane, I used my dragonfly every day for about 6-7 months, only sharpened it once, a strop will bring it right back if it starts to dull a little. Fantastic knives and I love the blue color.

I’ve sailed both oceans and never had a problem with rust on a pocket blade that I used regularly. I’m done with all these companies making fidget toys instead of blades with edge retention. The primary function of an EDC carry is EDGE RETENTION. Good review and good job Spiderco!!!

Beyond just that - even if one of my knives picked up a bit of corrosion or discoloration, so what? It’s not like that’s a particularly difficult thing to fix. Hell, the few times I’ve had to deal with surface corrosion it was easily removed using the suede side of leather scraps I had leftover from making some paddle strops. You usually don’t need to go more aggressive than the compound you use on a strop. In bad/stubborn cases, barkeepers friend is really useful. I’ve never had to resort to using a vinegar bath or anything like that. Word of warning to anyone new reading this - do not use your strops for removing surface rust. You don’t want to contaminate the strop and a lose piece of leather is far easier to work with.

@@Doc.Holidayhough we do have to recognize that Spyderco does have the excellent salt lockbacks in a bunch of great designs for those who have tasks that require an essentially stain proof option. lc200n, magnacut, and h2 are all great user steels. I can also see increased toughness being appealing if you know your tasks lend themselves to minor edge damage. I’d rather deal with a minor edge roll than sharpen out chipped edges. But those aren’t the trendy fidget knives. They’re “boring” lockbacks with FRN handles. I happen to like lockbacks and FRN, so I admit I may be biased in favor of the salt line.

@@just9911 I have a SpydieChef. They are $400 bucks now! I keep it in the galley drawer of my RV. Occasionally, I carry it, but the edge retention of LC200N isn’t that great. Its mid range. It’s not an all day EDC hard worker. It’s good in the galley trimming meat and opening packages but it isn’t hard continuous use, not unless you can touch it up along the way. Nice and thin in the pocket though.

It was a limited edition sprint run version with ivory FRN scales and a VG10 blade. Since the FRN scales were ivory, I was able to rite dye them an amazing violet color💯🔥👏 After getting the newer stretch 2 lightweight with K390, I switched the K390 blade onto the violet FRN handle😁 My Stretch 2 lightweight with violet FRN and K390 blade is one of my all-time favorite Spyderco knives👍

I like the lockbacks, and think these are better knives than the Military/Paramilitary models.

If you want excellent examples of some of the best characteristics Spyderco has to offer - you owe it to yourself to check out the Sage 5, Manix 2, and Native 5 (not necessarily buy them, but definitely handle one and use one of you have the opportunity). The sage 5 lightweight specifically highlights the compression lock, leaf shaped blade, and their pivot bushing setup.

  • @just9911

@@Dynotop1a yep, major brain fart. Corrected. Though I think I need to amend my previous statement even further. Not too long ago I had to buy new examples of a few Spyderco knives that were stolen (long story, I need to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt) so they’re all about the same “age” (within a couple weeks of each other). This morning I stopped to look at the wear that each knife is accumulating and I think I actually carry the native more than the sage or the manix. While I think the Sage 5 is a great encapsulation of the best of unique Spyderco characteristics, the native might be the biggest no-brainer pick for the majority of knife fans. It’s “more than enough knife” for the majority of edc tasks, the ergonomics work for a massive range of people, and it’s fully ambidextrous. I also think the handle and blade design are more aesthetically neutral compared to things like the delica. It’s sort of like how the Rat models or the kabar dozier are rather plain but that plainness is part of why they work for most users. Don’t get me wrong, I love the compression lock. But I can see how it’s not ideal for everyone and how the limited number of lefty variants hurts its status as far as being recommendable to everyone. And since lockbacks are so prevalent in the Spyderco catalog, it’s really worth picking up one of the best examples of the design. Or this could just be 20+ years of excellent experience with various lockback spydies (delica variants especially) causing a bias that is affecting my attempt at being objective.

Sal Glesser designed the Stretch series as folding hunters. I bought a Stretch 2 in ZDP-189 with light brown G-10. My intent was to carry it as a back-up to my fixed blade when hunting big game. ... Along came a Stretch 2 XL 4" in CruWear and gray G-10. It's one of my favorite folders and gets lots of EDC carry and usage. It hasn't developed a patina at all. ... Finally, I acquired the Stretch 2 Lightweight in K-390 you reviewed. It was bought along with 3 other Spyderco lightweight K-390 folders when there was a brief, significant price drop this past summer. ... I'm very fond of the Spyderco Stretch family. IMO, one could be Spyderco's logo symbol folder. ... Lots of favorable comments about PM-2s under this video. I'm an outlier, in that I consider the PM-2 to be one of the worst designs in Spyderco's history. They've made a fortune selling a shrunken Military, with a handle on which it's impossible to get a full grip. It's a three-legged dog that doesn't hunt IMO. ... I've never handled a PM-3, as I have no use for one. ... Great video as usual, Aaron. You're the clean-up hitter on the You Tube knife review team.

When Spyderco relaxed its minimum retailer prices for 2 days a couple of weeks ago, the Stretch 2 in K390 could be had for $129-133, and I relented. I think it'll nicely fit the "harder use" category, which I didn't really have in pocket knives between Opinels/SAKs and dressy gentleman's knives. I can't really review in depth, as my use has been mostly office bound, but fit/finish was fine, its very comfortable in the hand, and the action a lot smoother than I anticipated with a lockback (been ages since I borrowed gramps's Buck 110). No issues flicking open with thumb, but a bit too much lockbar resistance for middle-finger "spydieflicks". The main competitor for me in the Spyderco lineup was the 2022 LeafJumper in K390, which offers nearly the same cutting edge, but goes for a minimal ricasso rather than the 50/50 choil, so its 4.4" closed vs 4.7" for the Stretch 2, 3.0 oz vs 3.7 oz. The gram counting ultralight hiker in me was tempted, but I think I made the right choice with the Stretch 2, as the jimping on the thumb ramp and choil bring a more confidant grip.

Dude just get the k390 I also live in an extremely humid environment. You simply keep it as dry as possible, oil it occasionally and store it in plastic with a large desiccant package. I never had any rust develop, ever. Dont let the humidity ruin your high speed tool steel experience.

I always preferred the looks of the old stretch over the new one, don't know why, I would like to have the old blade but with a 4 inch cutting edge and CPM S30V steel and some sort of cross bar lock (not the bearing lock or whatever its called, that just always seemed to be at the wrong angle). Also would like for it to say "made in Golden, Co, USA, Earth".

Question for the knife experts: I'm looking at putting together a couple fire kits for the family. Just some of the small EDC pouches from maxpedition or condor, nothing big. Need help picking a decent, budget/cheap pocket knife to put in it for working on light kindling or the like. Any ideas?

Just got mine delivered today, thanks to your recommendation! Feels great and happy I scored one in this steel. One tiny nit in looking at it, which makes no difference in the slightest: WHY on this one model only did Spyderco put a black clip with a satin blade? I've never see that combination. It does contrast fine with the blue handle, and like I said of course makes no difference performance wise, just curious. (Maybe they had a batch of black clips they needed to use up?) FYI, on every G10 or CF Spydie I buy I always pickup a Lynch deep carry clip, but never on the FRN handles. I don't know why; maybe because they're generally thinner so I want them to stick up more. Spyderco factory clips are some of the best in the industry regardless. Way nicer than the ugly black steel clips Benchmade uses.

I don't know why people fall out of love with Spyderco. I kind of did until I recently got a Manix 2 Lightweight as an impulse buy and fell back in love. It's actually one of the only folders I've ever fallen in love with. It's perfect for me. The ball bearing lockup snaps into position like nothing else. I love fidgeting around with it. They'd sell a boatload of them at the $100 price point. I paid $135 and it's a bit more than I wanted to pay but it's a sweet knife even without a sexy steel. Back in love with Spyderco.

I love the older blade shape of the Stretch 2 and in my experience, M4 > K390 in every aspect. M4 is, IMO the ultimate knife steel for a folder. For me, the Shaman is the best Spyderco ever and the new Bodacious that's being dropped looks like it'll be a close second. I love the Manix 2 (standard, I don't like the lightweight versions of anything Spyderco) as well but I think the SHaman is just the absolute best Spyderco I've ever owned/used. I find it so laughable that anyone would ever buy a Benchmade anything o ver a Spyderco, even as inflated as the prices are these days.
