I have NEVER seen this called before

Спорт

In tonights matchup between the Boston Bruins and the Colorado Avalanche, we saw something I have NEVER seen called before. A too many men for BOTH teams at the same time! After that strange goal between Montreal and Tampa last week and now this odd call, I don't know what is in the water but I am loving it! The game itself was a really fun one with plenty of action between two of the best in the NHL. Brad Marchand scored a couple, both goalies played great and we got overtime! While it ended in a shootout, a real shame for a game this good, I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

I dont have the exact verbiage in front of me but I believe there is a rule about players at the bench changing out not counting towards too many men. I'm saying this as a bruins fan, I dont think the avs should have caught the penalty here. maybe the exact verbiage would clarify though, where kiviranta gets on and has the puck while the other player is still technically on the ice

As a hockey ref, sometimes we miss stuff. It's best, though, not to blame it on us. We're watching in a much more limited field of vision, watching the game from 5 feet, versus the 50 feet you all see it at. We definitely miss stuff, and we all hate it, but referees are human.

Have some people handy to break up fights and do face off. Ok, I'm a ref - this was, as you said, the refs "screwing the pooch". If Boston has too many men (TMM) on the ice, and they have the puck, the play should be blown dead. Nothing after that point matters, so you ignore the Avs TMM. (By the way, technically you can have 6 skaters on the ice at the same time, AS LONG AS the player coming on doesn't play the puck before the player he's replacing gets off.) That didn't happen here so technically Colorado had TMM. But, since the penalized team (Bruins) played the puck after committing the TMM infraction, the whistle should have gone to kill the play, and the Avs TMM is irrelevant. This was a case of the refs getting together to try to minimize their mistake. But with all the cameras, the truth is easy to spot. I don't like calling out refs, but when they're wrong, they're wrong. And calling it like it is is what makes a good referee.

@@dalegarraway9865 Fair analysis, but that just supports my opening claim that the refs "screwed the pooch". 4 officials need to see 6 Boston skaters for the amount of time they were too many. There's no excuse at this level to miss that. You should NEVER have a situation where BOTH teams get TMM penalties that don't occur simultaneously, when the first offending team has possession of the puck before the second team offends. They HAVE TO SEE IT.

Boston was going to get a TMM penalty but had to touch the puck for a whistle. It's been years since I officiated a game, so I may be wrong on the boxlax rules but IIRC if the non-possessing team has two many men, its a delayed penalty. But if the attacking team butchers the goalie-to-the-bench swap .... you can see where this is going. Maybe some other Canadian boxlax ref with more recent experience (and a rulebook) can elaborate ....

Unless the changing players are involved in play, the too many men call is at the discretion of the ref, so Boston getting the puck does not automatically stop play (or maybe it was not really an infraction initially because the leaving Boston player was within 5 feet of the bench). But, no icing. The leaving Boston player seemed to never leave the ice. When the Boston defence-man played the puck forward and Boston still had too many men, the ref was like okay, that’s it. Unfortunately, Colorado also had too many men at that point as well (the Colorado player that entered the ice played the puck before the player leaving was in the box so that’s an automatic penalty -the 5 foot buffer is not even considered). This is my reading of the rule, but maybe not the only way refs could handle this sort of thing. Considering the waved-off icing, I suspect the refs got the penalties right, as strange as it is.

The B’s were caught with too many players but the referees delayed the penalty, which is correct. But once the B’s got ‘possession and control’ of the puck, the whistle should have ended the play. It's one thing to see a bunch of their fans in eastern conference cities (not any less annoying but I digress) but Colorado is pretty far from Boston. Its very simple. The bruins aren't allowed to be on the pp. The bruins are also getting penalties for doing legal things. They got a penalty for delay of game when the opposing player very clearly deflected it.

The refs have been absolutely terrible this season and seems like each season it gets worse and worse!!?? It's absolutely absurd how terrible they've been!!? There's 0 consistency at all!!?? They'll let blatant penalties go that r done right in front of them but then they'll call the weakest shit ever especially if it's a hooking or holding call!!? Some of the ridiculous shit they call as hooking is just unbelievable!? They're calling guys for hooking just cuz he was reaching to try to knock puck off guys stick and at some point in the process the guys stick shaft happens to nick other guys glove and they call hooking!!? They see the smallest bit of stick to glove contact and they'll call hooking even when there was 0 hooking happening at all and the guys stick isn't up in the guys hands it just touched the backhand part of his glove!!? They really need to go back to school on what is and isn't hooking and holding and stuff like that!? With holding too they'll call a guy for holding but all guys doing is putting his free hand on other guys back for a second while they're pushing and shoving in a scrum along the boards!? I've seen them call a few guys for that and guy didn't even hold guy at all!? And other times they've called guys for holding, when there was no hold, just cuz they happened to have one hand off their stick and r trying to fend off (kinda stiff arm) guy going at him!? Some of the shit they've called is just complete shit!!? And there's times where a penalty will get called but it's not the ref who was right there with best view of play that calls it it's the ref that's furthest away from play and couldn't have seen what really happened and they'll let it stand for some dumb reason!? You'd think in situations like that the ref who was right there and saw what happened and didn't see anything worthy of a penalty would get other refs together and say "hey no there's no penalty on play cuz I was right there and saw it...and whoever called it obviously was mistaken!" But instead for some dumbass reason the ref who was right there and saw everything and knows there was no penalty on play just doesn't say anything and just let's other guy make a call that I'm sure he knows is completely wrong!!? It's ridiculous!!? That's whole reason there's 4 officials out on ice so they can get together and talk over anything questionable and get call right!!? It's absolutely fucking ridiculous that we're still having to deal with shitty officiating effecting the outcomes of games and sometimes very important games at that!!? We have the technology and video replay and stuff so there should be no reason to have to be living with terrible wrong calls, sometimes they even know call was wrong but they still uphold the call!? It's ridiculous and there's no reason y we shouldn't be able to make sure the right calls r made!!? I say they need to add 1-2 more officials, but not on the ice!? I think they should add 1-2 officials and have them up top, like up near where broadcasters sit, and give them access to replay and have it so they can radio down to officials on ice. And those 1-2 officials up top can kinda do same kinda thing that the video coaches that each team has does!? That way when games going on they can be watching too and if anything questionable happens they can quickly look at replay and radio down the correct call for officials on ice to make!? And like anytime there's a penalty called the guys up top could quickly look at replay and just double check that the correct call was made that way if ref on ice that made call was mistaken, like say a high stick was called but guys up top looked at it real quick and saw that it was guys own stick or his teammates stick that actually hit him!? Then they could inform refs on ice and they could correct the call!!?? It wouldn't really add that much time to games and personally I wouldn't care if it made games an hour longer as long as they were getting the calls right and calling a fair game and we weren't having terrible wrong calls effecting outcomes of games I could care less really!!? Who cares if it ads a lil more time to games really!? Hockey games would still be faster and WAY more exciting than Football is and Football is like the biggest sport with tons of fans!? Football games r really long and boring with lots of nonsense with nothing happening but plenty of people still religiously watch it!!?? So doing something that may or may not add a tiny bit of time to hockey games but will definitely result in the correct calls being made and will make it so games don't end up being decided by wrong calls then id be all for it!!?

5 foot rule only applies if neither leaving or entering player is in the play. If either player touches the puck or makes a hit while the other has skates on the ice then it’s too many men. And in this case the Colorado player entering the ice did play the puck.
