Unless a proper statistically rigorous survey was conducted, 50/50 on positive and negative feedback almost always means a majority of the audience *with* problems felt the need to make noise, while a significant minority of the audience *without* problems felt the need to go out of their way to defend it. You can't possibly think Samsung is able to sell these things with 50% of them breaking.

Yeah, Samsung wouldn't have put it in the market if they knew it would be a 50/50. The loss from having to constantly provide repairs on top of the bad press would have significantly dented Samsung's reputation. After the Note 7 battery explosion incidents, I'm not sure if Samsung wants to go so cavalier.

I want to become part of the Flip/Fold family, but the screen needs to be sturdier before I'll consider one. I hand my son my phone to watch stuff on longer trips, and with the phones having a higher price point, i'd hate for it to get destroyed.
When it comes to pocket spaces, if you are a "plus size" person, thickness becomes the main concern since your thighs is pushing strongly against the pocket fabrics. If you're regular size, then thickness doesn't matter to much and the height of the phone really matters when it comes to pocket space

I mean no offense by this but if your so overweight its hard to fit things in your pockets that is not the cellphone companys fault
I agree that phoned should be just that tiny square, it would be a very good concept The razr is pretty much the bridging phone to that in my mind. You have the large screen for whenever you can't get by with the small screen, and the small screen for everything else. Did you guys see the case motorola is planning to release for it? It's just a small little bag, love it!
I'm glad Matt mentioned the durability. This is why I don't see myself ever buying one. I want a phone that lasts 5 years. These things seem like just fast e-waste.

If they eventually get to the point where the screen is as durable AND has the same camera capabilities as the S Ultra, then I'll get a Z Fold.
Im more excited about the "cheaper" version razr. To me the best feature of folding phones, is making a big screen smaller! and it will keep the screen protected. bo external display to even get jacked up but now it will be at a cheaper price
I love my razr plus. I was easily able to fix the problems i encountered at first. 1. Battery: Fixed by adjusting the front screen to timeout instead of auto detect. 2. Camera: Not a fix but just use the front display instead of the inner. Ive never used any of my phones for pictures i wanted to show off I own dslr for that. 3: crease: You get used to it quickly. My favorite things about it is its helped with my hand soreness from holding slab/ non foldable phones because i can judt use the inner display instead of a big phone, it helps me track my routine better with the little animation it comes i am able to eat and sleep better (people who own it know what i mean), able to use as tripod and take group photos with friends and family, the outer screen can be customized with its own wallpaper ( i have picture of my wife as my main screenwallpaper and an anime wallpaper on my secondary screen). Honestly the best phone ive ever had since iphone 5s.
I really wanna love foldables, esp this one. But I agree with Matt. I wish I didn't. Guess I'll keep watching from afar.
I like to run with my phone and I've gravitated towards this as it fits perfectly in my palm. Also the thin screen protector can be replaced by yourself. Haven't done it yet but videos out there show its easy enough. The outa display im using 75% of the time. It's actually a bigger feature than they intended i would guess. The inner 6.9 inch display is a bonus for streaming sessions.
I'm holding out on any Flips or Folds, or rolls, or garage door phones until they make a tri-fold or an elder scroll phone that opens up to full tablet size. Until then, everything else is just working the kinks out.
I honestly love my fold 3 but the form factor makes it impossible to feel safe in the pocket especially if you're working or bending a lot however, I've yet to have any issues whatsoever with my fold 3 and have been overly satisfied with the extra screen space in addition to the ability to use everything I could possibly need on the outside display. I understand the problems these devices have but the use case in my situation being extra screen space, has far outweighed the cons like the sound of when it opens when it's got a little dust in the hinge or the fragility of the inside display. All in all, I like the foldables, but hotdog style, not hamburger style haha.
My Z Flip 3's screen protector got really bad bubbles about 1 year in. I took it off, but now there is substantial cracks in the crease. A tiny crack just happened one day, and within the next 24 hours, it got way worse. My Z Flip 3 is not even 2 full years old, and I use it very little since I also have a second phone, and I have dropped it maybe two or three times total. I love the folding aspect of it, but reliability is an issue at the moment. I also have a Z Fold 4, I literally just bought it about 3 weeks ago. The outer screen cracked while it was in my pocket (I was helping my sister move, and maybe something hit it on my pocket), bummer.
Id love to buy it but after seeing how the front display has no support (it breaks easy cus its hollow) its a pass for me which sucks because I love the concept of folding smart phones
Ive had my Z Flip 3 since launch and it has been closed in a drawer for months at a time since its only my sometimes phone. The screen is flawless and Ive never had an issue. My friend has had one same time frame and it looks like hell. Been sent in twice. His is also a second phone, not main line.
I literally just got one today, and I love it. This is a funny coincidence 🤣
I switched from the Pixel 7 Pro to the Razr 40 Ultra and i love it! Sure the camera may not be as good as the Pixel but i totally enjoy using the phone. I do not regret my decision at all.
Had a Z-Fold last me an entire deployment to Somalia with zero issues. Love the thing.
Price higher at lower durability tradeoff is one thing I'm concerned about, sure, but the existence of any crease whatsoever is definitely something that would be something that I would notice too, so I'm on board with that argument. Speaking of size being height / width vs thickness. In pocket, thickness is a little more irksome, but height renders many pockets useless. I had a OnePlus 7T Pro and now have a Zenfone 10. I was tempted by an S23 Ultra but in an exasperated fit of being fed up of giant phones, and miffed by the middling battery on the standard S23 (and more subjectively not being a fan of OneUI), I sought out something mildly compromised but still flagship, ending up with the ASUS. The height and width difference vs the 7T Pro is markedly notiecable, as well as a 30g weight difference... But it is a couple of mm thicker, especially at the camera bump. And that's incredibly obvious, even more so when you need a case that sufficiently protects said camera bump. It doesn't help that I used to run the hard polycarbonate sandstone case on the OnePlus which was sublime. Just protective enough for the bits that mattered without adding much bulk at all. What it added was the perfect amount of grip. ASUS include a similar case in the box with one massive difference: TEXTURE. The grip on the Zenfone 10's included case is slippery vs. the incredibly reassuring sandstone. And being a small phone that won't sell well, there's not many decent hard plastic options out there. What's truly mind-boggling is the back case of the phone itself is reasonably grippy and tactically enjoyable (not as grippy as the sandstone case, but not bad). It's just, without any case you risk the screen and camera bump getting damage. Going back to topic then, I find a smaller traditional format more appealing to me than a flip or fold in most cases, but the trajectory we are seeing is good, even if things are plateauing somewhat in alleviating concerns, usability is improving. If they did a sturdier build with slightly lower prices and a more imperceptible crease, who knows, I may switch in a few years. I value a smaller height and width in my pocket more than a thinner phone overall. They do need to match flagship specs for the beyond-flagship prices though.
Haha matt lookin annoyed at Duncan's wealth flex
Forgot to say how basically empty the back glass cover is and during the bend test on jereyrig everything it was the only part that broke lmao.

That and the inner screen scratches so easily.
Matt should've said that Austin couldn't shut the flip up about the new fllip 😂😂😂
I agree with Matt 100% I can't get behind the Flipping phones. The screen bothers me too much if I can feel the fold. I'm good. Haha
I'm hopefully going to get mine today hopefully it's going to be awesome and I can look overlook this little inconveniences but that's only if they're little to me so in all reality this phone has all the options to go up or go straight down on personal opinion
I have a Z Fold 4 for 9 months, and my wife uses a Z Flip 4 for 3 months. Her phone dropped from 1m high into the concrete and the top and bottom half gets misaligned. Samsung just replaced her phone under warranty, no questions asked. My fold never fell or got any scuffs. A week after my wife got her new flip, a green line appears on my Fold's inner screen. So I visited the nearest Samsung repair center and they charged me a thousand dollars do replace the screen. That's make no sense at all. I didn't pay, and refused the repair. Fortunately, I have insurance for my devices but I'll seek my consumer rights in Court. Those phones are incredible, but to fragile to a daily driver.
I think the flip variants of foldables are still working prototypes no matter who makes them. You are going to have to open and close them much more frequently which I I'll drastically shorten the lifespan of that screen protector which is basically every normal person's complaint. They don't realise that is just a protector that is a quick and easy fix. Now the tablet style foldables are much more akin to a flagship device. Because you have the outer display, you do not have to open and close the device as much. And when you do open it, you are usually able to keep it open for an extended period of time. This all helps reduce the wear and tear of the inner screen protector. Not to mention that most now have flagship specs and cameras give or take. Plus, for both cases the foldable display tech is getting to a point where they are pretty safe to use for most people. Just not the ungrateful ones that don't understand the value of things and treat them like valueless children's toys. If you treat your phone with the respect it deserves because of how much you spend on it or what type of phone it is, the phone will obviously last longer. I know people who have had the Fold 3 for almost 2 years with no problem. Not even a peeling inner screen protector. That alone is proof that if you take care of your personal possessions, they will last plenty long enough.

@@AnonTriple That is in a closed special environment. Heat/cold/humidity all effect it in ways that weren't tested. Realistically you have a fraction of that claimed 200k. Also, most flip users are going to be opening and closing there phone a minimum of a few dozen times a day. That very quickly adds up to thousands a month.
Honestly I think the only way I would buy a "foldable" is if it's like the samsung Fold series, and that just comes down to being able to read like a tablet and emulation DS and 3DS games lol
13:02 Beautiful example Matt!
NGL but listening to Matt and Austin debating is like listening to 80's WWF commentators Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. :D
the "flipped" version for me makes no sense, the iphone mini on the table at the end is less annoying in your pocket than both Motorola or Samsung flipped phones, I agree with Matt. In the other hand I love the "folded" style, they are thicker but when open you actually have a tablet with you, do some work and multitasking is way easier with that screen size, and when is close it fit in your pocket. But, there is a big but, until they don't find a solution for the inner display we are still on square one... the protecting screen can peel in manners of weeks and the soft screen have the tendency of bleed, specially if you peel of the film at one point... mine peeled of after 5 months and after 2 days where the peeling started the display started bleed, I sent the phone to Samsung and they asked me $500+ for the fix for something that the phone did itself... after a number of unsuccesful calls and email they decided to waive the fee because I did involved the Australian consumer protection agency... after 8 month with the fixed phone it recently start peeling again
I own a Razr+ and I switched from iphone so a big switch from me but I gotta say I love it the cameras are cool to me since quality still comes down to who takes the picture which can make it better but yes the sensors can only do so much but the front screen is dope I personally use the "ready for" app which turns the phone into a PC theres alot to talk about and not enough shown the gaming mode, ready for, 2 apps on both screens, chipset compared snapdragon 8 gen 2 and usb 2.0 versus usb 3 possibly on the z flip 5 but the hinge and screen protector is far from what I wanted to hear because there's so much more to talk about when gamers and tech guys want to buy a phone in my opinion
you can get a good replacement screen protector, I replaced mine with a 3rd party and it is still going strong and lasted longer than the Samsung one
I have the same problem with phones as Matt. The crease. Seeing it and feeling it.. I hate it.
Flip phones are like a car in a convertible version, 2 different experiences with one model. Not bad Motorola!
I love my razr+. Got it after looking at flip phones for a while now. Only complaint isn't even on the phone itself, it's on my carrier.
Did he say scrolling through "threads" ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've had my zflip 3 for almost a year. Several drops and it's still perfect. I've heard the z flip 4 is garbage.
I do worry about the sustainability of folding phones, I'd be interested if these kinds of devices could comply with the EU's new battery standards.
Been using the razr phone for a bit now, and yes what he says about the cameras and the finger print reader is true, but that being said, as of now, this is the best flipping phone experience bar none (maybe until the flip 5 comes out)
To be honest I would love to get a Razr with the outer screen but I need a min of 358GB of storage for my media and work content that I need to have access to at all times and cannot trust cloud storage. and ata max of 256gb, I can't do it. I have a 1tb fold 4(only available from the samsung website) and it is nice but it is really big.
After shifting to foldables, its hard to go back to the slab phones. Because regardless which form factor of the fold it is, a foldable just offer so much more in a world where your smartphone are so powerful it is taking over the function of so many gadgets we used to have before.
These many years into folding phones just make me think that they’re the epitome of e-waste, when I buy phones it’s not to replace them after a year, it’s to keep them for as long as they work, I replaced my iphone 6 for an iphone 11 and have been using it for however many years it has now, it’s still working fine because I take care of it, but if you come and tell Me that regular use of a folding phone has it breaking down after a mere year… I’m not stupid to buy one of those things
i myself have just sent in my z flip 4 for a screen replacement it just went out one day, i love the idea but it dose make me miss a traditional phones reliability.
Got the amazing zflip 5 love it no problems yet.
I agree with Matt where thickness matters. My phone is always the only thing in that pocket, so vertical size doesn't matter TOO much to me. But thicccccness with it in my pocket and bursting out of my pants does
The idea of a folding phone is cool. The execution at present leaves a lot to be desired. I'm not paying flagship prices for mid-level specs and a scratch-prone plastic screen.
Agree with feeling creases, deal breaker because that's all I'll notice.
When Samsung bring outer display on their flip, Austin will say it would be the best thing ever 👀 Just because Moto does it before Samsung or Apple, it's a "cheap phone feature"
really good phone but plz try the oppo find N2 flip its reallly good i tryed one its so cool plz see if you can try it
Im currently involved in an argument with Samsung because they're saying my screen protector peeling off isn't covered by my warranty because I dropped the phone. I'm so annoyed at this. They know there is an issue with their screen protectors, tell if you touch if yourself it will void the warranty. But it's not covered if anything else, even if unrelated, gets damaged. Funny that they'll rate the hinge for 100k opening bit won't the screen protector.
I grown up with flip phones during my high school years. I glad they are bring them back.
I was honestly thinking of switching to this from my iPhone cause Motorola A new flip phone the OG of flip phones But after seeing this and how it’s performed and handles day to day things I’ll stick with my iPhone but maybe switch to the Flip 4 or 5 when it comes out
Austin will NEVER give up his Z Flip lol!
I have the Motorola RAZR+ and I absolutely love it
Bought my Z Flip 4 back in December. Screen protector has started coming losse/bubbling in the last week or so.
Here’s a challenge for Austin Evans, to prove Matt wrong/right about the durability and usage of a flip phone, Austin should daily 1 flip phone for 1 whole year without replacements or upgrading to another version. You can still use the device’s warranty but as soon as his phone cannot function at all or meet his requirements, the challenge is over and Mystery Tech gets a budget increase IF Austin replaces his flip within 1 year. It’s more to see if it is at all possible to go 1 full year without replacing or upgrading your phone. And it will give most people more realistic expectations on owning a flip smartphone since a lot of people can’t afford to upgrade or replace their phones every 9 months.
Sounds like a disappointment on Motorola's end. I'm a Z Fold 4 owner and I absolutely love it.
I recently switched from the Z Flip4 to the Razr Plus, and I legit love it. On the Flip, my biggest gripe was the front screen. It was so limited in what it could do, it was almost as if why bother having it in the first place. On the Razr, while yes the cameras are very meh, the front screen more than makes up for it, especially when it comes to sending a quick text that can be personalized and not just selected from a list of predetermined messages that you can't even add to. I could see how a photographer would want better cameras, I personally don't. Also, from what I've read, it seems like the front screen will be bigger on the Flip 5, but still very limited in what it can actually do.

Incorrect. Samsung's is both smaller (3.4 vs 3.6) and lower resolution. It's also unlikely to be able to use practically any app you want on the front screen like the Moto. Bought the Moto after owning Samsung flips and folds and it's a generation leap over either in terms of hardware design. Samsung really has a lot of catching up to do. They're basically being lapped by the competition and don't seem very concerned which is troubling

@MrOldskool1974

@@user-or1ye7qq2gand the moto is shown to be not near as durable as the Flip 5. I've watched all the stress tests between them and the moto always failed first or just failed in general. The outer display glass is hollow underneath and therefore "weaker" and more prone to break if pressure is applied and the hinge is most definitely inferior to Samsung's. Also, software support on razor sucks as do the cameras compared to Z Flip 5. So idk why people prefer the Moto? It's simply not as good.
I love the way those shorts look on you Matt 😍😮💨
Personally I like the Z fold because it's part tablet so I can take notes much more efficiently than I can on small phones because I'm 6'8 and my hands are big
The z flip can do the same exact thing all I have to do is download a certain app but you can fully use the flip outee screen but the only down fall is you can't use the lock screen
I really have a use for the bigger ones but I think we need 1 more generation before all the kinks are mostly worked out. I'm glad to see the pixel one and that's probably the path I may take depending how this generation goes.
If the crease in the screen wasn't very visible like it is, and I couldn't feel it when my finger goes over it, I might consider one. But that obvious visible crease and the being able to feel that dent in the screen where it curves make me not even want to consider one of these. I would rather it be half screen, and half physical buttons when it's opened at that point if its gonna be a flip phone. That way you get a nice screen with no crease and easy physical buttons for non swipe or touching dialing or playing games.
Does the Z Flip not already carry apps over? And it can't run everything from the outer display? I've been doing that on my Fold 2 and 4 since I got them.... Edit: I feel the need to reiterate, again, that these devices are *not* fragile. They *can* take a drop or two, just like any phone. They can also land *badly* and break after one drop, just like any other device with *glass.* It is not a toy, it's an investment that you are *supposed* to take care of. That means you shouldn't take a phone with absolutely no dust rating to the beach and you shouldn't be absent mindedly opening and closing the device, over and over again. It's an incredibly versatile device that puts out what you put in.
Just wait until the Galaxy Z flip 5 releases. It will be the only phone Austin talks about and will not shut up about it. Mark my words, lol!
Ehhh i want a razr+ will use it along side my iPhone. Waiting for the 2024 version
The Flip 5 will be coming out within the next month, The Razr+ just beats samsung to it. Wonder if the Flip 5 will have an under screen camera like the current Fold.

"scrolling through Threads" Nobody is scrolling through Threads. It HAS to be more dead than Google+
They need to bring the sidekick back
The reason I don't use a folding phone is not because it folds, but because the non folding flagships have the better cameras.
The problem with these is they aren't 2 separate screens, which means they have the screen go over the hinge which makes the phone not very durable.
I won't lie I've switched to Razr Ultra magenta cause the colour is stunning. But I already regret my Flip 4. The hinge makes me scared to open my phone. Especially cause I like to flip it with one hand. The camera is "alright" for what I'm doing with and the battery is "no go" for me. To be honest I'll probably go to Flip 5. Also, just to jump on, most of my customers are interested in flip phones because it's foldable but not convenient. Also part of them are the nostalgia of flip phones.
my galiaxy fold 3 has failed in like the first 7 months inner screen unusable
I tried out the Zflip 3 for about 3 weeks. It's a nice premium feeling phone but I can't stand the thought the the display will die with normal use after a few years. Dual screen phones all the way (Microsoft please give us a narrower Duo 3)
What about the Oppo find N2 flip ?
This is entertainment
We really should start making phones that last 4+ years for the sake of the planet. A phone that lasts only 9 months before it has problems is just not acceptable
Folding phones are now getting to the point where I'd consider them. If the phone is going to have an outer screen then I want that screen to be the best it possibly can be. To use Samsung's naming format I'd be more likely to go for the Fold over a Flip, as I'd have a normal phone and then could open it up to a tablet. The Flips are nice but you are always going to have a compromised experience on that outer screen.
@sloppynyuszi
10 ай бұрын
To be honest the folds are also compromised. They have improved a lot, but these folding phones folded are still compromised. As they are fat and lop sided due to the hinge. Nothing really deal breaking at first, but at that cost that folded out experience has to rock hard, and these phones really fail me at it. The crease right in the middle is a deal breaker if you sketch a lot and I guess to a degree note taking too, and that aspect ratio is so square that video playing is hardly bigger than a regular slab. I carry an iPhone and iPad mini with me. Carrying a 2 in 1 device would be better, but I do a lot of stuff on my iPad mini, and having it square shaped with a crease is too much of a compromise. The surface duo was almost there, if I’m only drawing on one side I’ll rather that. Problem there is that the specs are low, it’s very expensive, and from what I hear Microsoft is bad at updating it. Also that camera bump, I rather just sacrifice it like they did in the original. The duo is probably the best android iPad mini competitor I’ve seen. Wish Microsoft didn’t give up on it.
Totally uninterested in folding phones. It’s cool, but why? What problem does this solve?
Have a fold 3 and have never been soo happy over a phone. Cause i can use it in ways i cant do with a regular phone. Better watching movies on, better for games, better in almost any area except one. Cameras... but it more then usable. And yes i wil trade better experiance in almost every area except cameras every day. But if you drope your phone etc etc... pls just learn to be more careful about stuff.
Hey so like am I the only one who has thought of this, but why not make the screen like glass sturdy on the edges and a bit softer in the center area where it need to fold, Ik a texture difference might occur but if it’s full open wouldn’t it act hard enough to pass… idk just a thought in my head, would maybe make me want one bc I’m still afraid of breaking screen
you have to unfold your phone to quickly check your home screen and notifications, it’s feels like a useless hinderance to something that has already been made convenient with a normal phone

Just so we're clear, the big advantage of the Razr over the Flip is that you can use it... without opening the screen. I don't know about you, but I prefer using a normal smartphone in that case, I also don't need to open it. Really, the only "advantage" is that it's smaller in the pocket... at the cost of being over twice as thick, which I think is a lot more annoying.
