I Hand Sewed an 1860s Berry Themed Swiss Waist

Ойын-сауық

This week’s video is a presentation of the construction process of a historical fashion Victorian (19th century) Swiss waist, sometimes called a sash belt, one of my all-time favourite historical fashion accessories. This is the second item of the four-piece ensemble I’m calling “The Berry Dress.”
This 1860s Swiss waist is, of course, berry-themed, and it is 100% hand sewn, requiring around 30 hours of work. The pattern I used is by Truly Victorian, and it is presented in two different styles, so I took to my Patrons on Patreon for them to choose which they’d prefer to see. The majority chose View B, with the shorter front, and so that’s what I made.
I’m really looking forward to releasing the construction video of the making of the berry bonnet next week. It’s going to be my first time ever making a bonnet, so it’s bound to be a historical clothing learning experience. Once the bonnet is complete, there’s only one piece left of the ensemble until it’s done, the bodice.
My plan is to release the historical sewing construction progress video of the bodice by the end of December so that this entire historical sewing ensemble may exist to ring in the New Year.
Thank you so much for watching and see you all next Thursday for another video!

    My apologies for the small audio glitch in the beginning! No matter how many different ways I exported the video, nothing seemed to resolve it. I suppose in this world imperfection is inevitable 😊 I hope you've enjoyed watching the construction of this Swiss waist/sash belt! I will be releasing the bonnet next week, then taking a week off from videos, and finally coming back strong at the very end of December with a video of the final piece construction, the bodice.

    Small item never equals a small task in sewing, does it?! 😁These are 2 of my favorite colors, green is #1 (all shades and tints) and that shot silk is the best bright pink /cerise color. This is the coolest non-leather belt project I've seen on the interwebs in a while. This is going to be fabulous with a bonnet for accessories. 💚👌

    I think you did this wonderfully well. Names don't matter, unless someone is wanting to research specific things. The x's are so cute. I use them often to tack down my raw edges when I don't want to fell. (Depending on how you made the x's they may count as catch stitches.) You move so differently than I do that your berries may indeed never come out! If, however, they start sneaking out, maybe "tack them down inside the crosspiece of the bow (the illusion..?.. of the knot). So, they're easy to remove & the securing stitches are out of sight. I hope you get your pinking shears oiled soon, and that the oil doesn't spoil any of your fabric! (I'm going to rewatch now, whilst expanding one of my own favorite dresses that I have outgrown)

  • @VBirchwood

    @VBirchwood

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Catherine! I shall definitely tack them down if need be inside of the bow loop, as at some point they'll probably go through far more movement than they are at home and could shift around too much haha. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to have to time the oiling of the pinking shears well so that I grease them during a gap when I won't need them 😊

    Thanks so much Juli! The boning method is one used a lot in Victorian garments, as many bodices and gowns were fully boned using just very flexible baleen typically, just to offer up some more structure and support to the garments 😊 I highly recommend the method as it helps everything just be a little more put in place.

    I’ll be making an 18th century gown at some point next year 😊 the costumes of The Great are actually more historically inspired than replications, so I’ll be making a style that’s more of a replication.
