I Had to Give All These Comics BACK.

What an interesting 24 hours. Got a great collection in! Trade it for a personal grail I once thought unobtainable! And then had to reverse it all just the following afternoon...

I feel like I see these videos pop up every now and then, and it's so frustrating to me even tho I'm not involved. I think as a community we need to just collectively tell people "sorry" when these situations arise. It's too bad and maybe not ideal for the person that traded or sold books but once you make the deal, all bets are off in my opinion. Anyway sorry to see this happened to you, you're a saint. Cheers.

As a buyer of collections I always, always set the books aside for 7 days and do not touch them. I also inform them that they will be set aside for 7 days if they change their mind, lastly I have the seller walk the books to my car and load them. This is a mental trick on two fronts, first they have a sense of ease the first few days that are extremely difficult for them and the emotions that they have (getting over the hump). Secondly, I don’t want them having the feeling that I “took” something from them rather they “let” something go (loading my car). So far I have had zero sellers remorse and I have purchased 60 (roughly) collections in the past 5 years. It’s all psychological….

Dont think I would have given them back. If it had just effected me, no problem, but the guy I traded the books to for the Green Lantern is effected at that point. Code of honor dictates the deal with him stands. Guy who owned the books originally is now effecting someone who is just doing a deal with you in trade. All do to original book owners indecision. He made the decision, he owns his decision and should have never even called you to CHANGE HIS MIND! His dishonor! To you and too the guy you traded with. He didnt care how it effected you or your trade guy. Only in how it effected HIM! The guy the books were traded too now says to himself "What the hell was that"???

You would want to try and keep your cliental happy as best you can. I mean the last thing you want is a heartbroken customer driving his truck through your front window. So I was thinking more about this after I commented. I had a situation come up here where I live with a shop I go to, and a purchase I made. I know the owner and his brother. Both good guys, and are always happy to help me find stuff. So naturally they get my business a lot, especially on Silver Age stuff (I have the same Green Lantern fascination as you). So They had a Mutt and Jeff (Golden Age book, slabbed) for like 50 bucks. I loved the history behind it, because it was printed and distributed while the Allies were gearing up to invade Europe in 44. It's not particularly valuable, just neat. I went in and bought some books and grabbed the slab, as they were holding it for me. Paid, and went home. I noticed that night that I hadn't been charged for the slab. Now I do not like owing anyone money, and I also do not like taking advantage of people I like. I went back the next day, but the owner and the Comic guy weren't in. I left the message about the situation, then came back in today and made sure they got the money for the book. It wasn't free, and I have zero interest in being a thief. The Comic guy was there, only asked for $40, and set me up with a discount moving forward. I guess the point I am trying to get at is that, sometimes mistakes get made. It sucks, but having a strong moral character is a thing. I do believe in karma, and I think that this will pay forward. I also think you killed the idea of the "evil reseller/store owner" stereotype that is out there; at least for this guy. I know I would rather do business with someone with integrity, and you've earned more of mine in the future for sure (after I pay my car off....)

Chuck was maybe 19 years old, barely had any money, and had to borrow money to buy the collection. He also had to give first dibs to the people from whom he borrowed money. If Chuck had not bought the books, they would have gone into the garbage, like some of the other comics they allegedly threw into the garbage. They were trying to clear out the house, not maximize the value of a collection. Chuck has done some questionable stuff, but he did not rob that family.

DUDE! That sucks! However, I would have done the exact same thing. I bet good will come out of this and you will get that Green Lantern #1.

You are a better man than me. I don't know if I could have given them back. Those ASMs would have filled holes in my collection. Hopefully karma will get you back.

The GL1 must have made it tougher to do. Would still have been hard but you have had most of those books come and go through your collection before. Seems like charging as if you were a pawn shop or loaned him the cash would be fair.

Yeah, sometimes it's ok to say no. I would've offered to get in contact with the guy who ended up with the books to see if they could make a deal separately, but that aside, I would've declined. Maybe next time put up a sign saying "All sales final"

I had the same thing happen to me. tho he asked a few months back. I am not a pawn shop and had sold a bunch of the books. It's not the worst thing for me. I bought a collection and after selling a few of the books. I had someone hit me up saying 1 of the books was stolen. Ended up working something out with the person who messaged me. I am taking way better documentation of who I bought form and what I bought going forward.

Sr. when you make a DEAL ( This goes to the other party and other people in the community ) AS MEN !!!!! , you stay with the DEAL !!!!!!! . Forget the "emotional attachment " you may have . You should have thought about it before thinking to sell the items . If it was my case , i would have said : "JUST TO BAD MY FRIEND " .

Speaking from my soul, exactly! Imagine spending time assessing a collection, negotiating a number, formulating a deal with a subsequent deal, then going back for all this. Absolutely not.

Good topic to bring up. James what exactly is the etiquette when someone asks for their collection back. I know 24hrs is a short period of time. But what if it was a week, or a month, maybe a few months? What is the proper etiquette when dealing with a seller?

I have to be honest. I get you were trying to be nice, but it was a move I don't feel you should have made. I wouldn't have done it. You spent your time and resources to make a fair deal with the person, shook on it and a deal was made and paid for in good honest faith. I have sold many things in over the years that i regretted and felt I didn't need to sell, but I still did it and held to my deal. Did I make a mistake in selling those items , maybe, but I made the deal never the less and learned from my mistakes. I think that individuals sense of entitlement to come back after the deal was made and ask for a return is absurd.

You may want to make a "No Givebacks" policy for the wishy-washy sellers you encounter.
