    Treat the rust on the galvanized metal. Then use cold galvanizing to cover it. You basically paint it on and you’re good to go for a long while. Otherwise, you’ll have to etch and prime the metal before painting it. Paint won’t stick to galvanized metal for long and will bubble and peel away. Treating now and saving the budget for important things is more efficient than worrying about aesthetics of the garage now.

    Shed rust: grit coated nylon wheel on angle grinder to remove loose surface rust, then paint with a 'rust converter' - basically Phosphoric Acid. The rest of the galvanizing left on there should be already etched enough to provide 'tooth' for the paint - if you can find one, go to a painter's trade shop and ask what they recommend for painting on a tin roof, it probably won't be the same as what they try to sell you at the big general warehouse stores although the warehouse will be cheaper (my father was a painter for 40+ years and I picked up on some of his experience). Shed interior: Quick project, a couple of big tins of self priming white paint and a roller, dust the walls, spot sand as needed then one coat of white on all walls and the ceiling. Find a metal worker, get some 'U' brackets made and bolt or lag screw them to each side of the doors, if it opens outwards also fit them to the door, run a 2x4 thru the brackets to stop anyone kicking in the doors. Quick fix for the tilting doors, rivet some 1/8in (3mm) angle iron on there (you can use pop rivets, but cut off nails that are peined over are more resistant to being drilled out) then get some heavy duty hasp & staple fittings fixed to the slab and door and padlock the door/s closed. Your 'personnel door' might also benefit from some 3mm angle iron riveted to the inside so the door can't just be bent up from a corner. Longer term, consider expanded metal mesh (like on security screen doors, it comes in both steel and aluminium) inside the windows. I'd also consider installing 'security' screen doors with 3 point locking on the house exterior doors, even if you decide to replace the existing doors with something made from solid hardwood. (I also may have worked in the Police for nearly 30 years in Oz).

    I'd also get some metal screens or bars over the garage windows. With respect to the metal exterior of the garage, it did not seem too bad from the very small video time. It looked like that it was mostly the edge flashing. It's all in the prep time and can take paint that will last for years. Overall, I thought the place looked a lot better than the initial sighting.

    Agree with Bruce Lee’s advice regarding rust converter. I own a roof restoration business in Adelaide, South Australia. You can spot-prime those areas with rust converter if they’re sound. You should pressure clean entire roof surface first at around 3000psi, rust converter, then undercoat entire surface with a metal/galv primer, followed by two coats of a roof membrane coating. I use Dulux Acratex roof membrane, but there are a few brands you can use. If there are holes in the galv due to rust - disregard everything I’ve just said and re-roof 😂

  • @jkmeldrum

    @@some-random-bloke Yes Rafael, provided they’re small, most roof membranes will bridge over small cracks or holes. If required, you can brush on thicker and then spray over the top.

    Solution to enlarge the hole is to buy two hole saws : one in diameter of already existing hole in door and second in new one. You stuck smaller inside bigger and screw together with pilot drill ( they have to be in the same "system" of whole saws ) . Now the smaller hole saw is becoming your pilot and the bigger is doing the job. All the best Mate!

    I don't know if you're building code will allow, but you could lift the garage up on cribbing and add framing under the current wall to make the garage taller. If you are going to do some major repairs you might as well add 300-450mm to its height.

  • @Helveteshit
    @Helveteshit2 жыл бұрын

    @Scott Brown Carpentry, is it expensive/difficult to get a permit to raise the ceiling of the garage? Make it a tad taller and change the car ports for something new (if the funds are available)? If it is like in Sweden, you send in for approval and that approval lasts for like 5 years. Allowing you to plan and what not, but first you need permit to do it... and maybe Neighbours approval. I mean, raising that roof... half a metre would be a whole world, for both vehicle and for yourself. I am not talking about making the roof steeper, but rather make the building taller. Few things that would allow ya, Build up the garage two cm for better slope against water. Get larger windows for more light. Provide better parking for your van. Among other tidbits.

    Now this could be a hard sell to Jess and funds may be limited, but don’t waste your time trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear with garage. Demo it and build a new garage that is secure, warm in winter, good light and higher ceiling. Not only will that be the cool option, but then you have a practical space to work at home on future projects. Having said all that, once you do have good storage space and your a builder like me, my garage is full of hoarded leftover building materials with no space to work! Nice work guys and love your videos.

    The silly enclosed spouting/guttering on those metal Skyline garages always rusts out. You'll need to work out a way to add marley spouting. The best treatment and sequence for the rust I've found is: Aggressive waterblast whole roof > Rust kill/converter rust patches > Penetrol coating (brush or spray) > Rust primer > Acrylic roofing paint everything. Modern acrylic paints will stick to old galv. If you have any real rust holes in the flashing the fastest and best long term solution is replace ridge and barge flashings with new. It's amazing what a simple waterblast and paint to the roof, walls and doors will do to an old galv garage.

    Yeah, so I'm about to re-paint the tin roof of a similar vintage house in Auckland, which also has plenty of surface rust. No point going over it with a wire wheel, because that's going to take forever. Under the corrosion is good steel, so I don't need to replace the roof, which will be $15k+. I've looked at rust converters from building stores, like Bunnings and Mitre 10 and came away thinking they're for small jobs, not 54 square meters. Figured that maybe it's better to head to paint companies instead, which is why I'll be using a product from Resene's called Galvo One to treat and prime the roof.

    Given the primary objective of a deadbolt is security, placement in the centre of door stile seems quiet logical in terms of being most secure and using an existing hole, perhaps not aesthetically correct to US eye balls but in this case functionality and convenience outweighs aesthetics.

    When I do the hole saw trick on a door, I also clamp a board to the back side of the hole to prevent tearout as the hole saw exits. If I want to be overly careful, I stop when the pilot bit for the hole saw makes a hole in the board on the back side, then use that to guide the hole saw from the back of the door.

    That seems really strict building code to have to get permits just for tile. Good to see the move is starting to come around and getting your van finally. That cracked me up when you said "Guess I don't have to quit my day job just yet" A great way to get rid of the rust on galvanized metal is using vinegar and scrub it good. You just need to make sure you wash it off with water. I was talking with a friend about this and he recommended using a paint that has zinc in it to cover the former rusted areas. Great video.

Even though you are excited for a shed your van won't fit in it and of course your van will very rarely go in the shed but if you were to be going away for a weekend be nice to park it in a shed so I would probably replace the shed completely just use it for now as is in its rusty form till it can be replaced and I see a Makita mower whipper snipper and hedge trimmer turning up in the next episode

    Big congrats on the new home. Don't move anything into the garage until it has been planned out and power has been run for your shop tools Gaston is going to sell you! You know, dust collection, table/miter/band saws, planer/jointer, drum/ disc sander, welder, etc. =D Get that stuff out of the way before things find a home. You will save time in the long run. The makita yard tools oughta be just the ticket for a neighborhood plot of land. Shoot. I enlarged about six holes with a hole saw without any other guides. 1. Nobody will see them 2. It was rough work. Any finish work like shown here needs to be prepared for like Scott shared with us. 3. It gets exciting fast when the hole saw catches the wood and runs away on you. 4. I didn't feel like walking out to the truck, making a guide, and grabbing clamps or screws. My drill chuck has a spot to grab on the nose that kind of helps.

    @@stuartandrews4344 I understand. But I don't have many small threaded hole saws. (maybe? an 1 5/8 = 41mm) that would fit the old style deadbolt hole. These newer click lock arbors don't have enough thread to stack two hole saws like my old Lenox ones do.

    Garage: pull off metal guttering if it has it - that stuff's a lost cause. Replace with your standard Marley stuff. Wire brush any loose rust, replace a couple of the runs with clearlite (I'd go for the Opal tint), pull any dodgy looking nails and replace with tekscrews, mask off the clearlite, rust convertor, etching primer, paint. Because it's an uninsulated garage, you might want to consider painting the roof titanium white, because that will drop the summer heat in there massively. Otherwise you have to start dealing with mechanical ventilation etc. I'd also consider replacing the tilt doors with rollers - way more secure IMO.

    When I first saw the coffee boat I thought "Oh hell, Scott's not gonna get any work done at all" Then Scott said Gaston lives in Nelson, and I thought "Oh hell, Scott's going to be broke forever" Also if you need garden equipment, get onto Trade Tested. Their power trimmer combo is on sale for about $450, 20" chainsaw is $200, 43cc brush cutter is $220, and they all go like a cut cat. My 43cc brush cutter I've already tuned and hopped up a bit and it shreds thick Kikuyu like its nothing, and you can fit a 9 1/4" skilly blade on it as well.

    Hi. With that door lock and deadlock combination it’s quite easy to just smash the glass panel and unlock the door from the outside. A deadlock that needs a key on the inside would be better. Less convenient though.

    5:55 For the sake of engagement/YTmetrics Power wash it. Hit problem areas with a nylon brush on an angle grinder. Provided you don't now have any holes in the roof, liberally treat problem areas with a rust neutralizing primer followed by 2-3 coats of the roof coating of your choice.

    Best thing I've found for drilling in existing holes is to find a holesaw that fits the current hole, then put that inside the hole you want. The internal one acts as your guide. I've found those included holesaws in the kits usually go blunt within the first job.

  • @regularguy9264
    @regularguy92642 жыл бұрын

    Another option I have used with those hole saws is to nest one hole saw inside the other. The centre hole saw fits the present hole size and the outer is the new size. The inner hole saw sits proud of the outer hole saw and acts as a guide. This also allows you to drill from both sides to ensure no blow out. Merry Christmas to you all and thanks for the great content!

    Love the reverse first approach with the hole saw, one thing I would recommend anyone doing is using the hole saw on both sides of the door so you don’t have blowout or splintering on one side, example of can be seen on the mdf clamped to the door. If money wasn’t an issue and provided it’s structurally sound new sheets, flashings and roller doors for the garage would be the go, great video and so good to see Gaston again the man has a tool for everything 👍🏽
