Video starts at 8:27. To anyone in a rush or low attention spans, the main meat of this is to before you give into an urge you are trying to quit or dislike, wait ten minutes and think and discuss with yourself why you are doing this and what is making you feel this way, the emotional triggers that made you feel like doing the urge will fade away. It's a bit similar to "activating sage mode" if you know what I mean, but it kind of forces it out by taking a step back for ten minutes and observing, questioning and fulling absorbing what you are about to do, like pausing a game.

It's funny people don't catch the double speak nonsense he's spouting. Pain avoidance and avoiding discomfort are essentially the same thing. If something is urgent it is inherently important. You can do something unimportant urgently (used as an adjective) but something that is urgent (used as a noun) is important by it's nature. He just gave a big carrot and stick analogy but started off by saying most people get it wrong by using that analogy. It's fluffy mean nothing acidemia speech for "I'm surreptitiously trying to sell a book of gobbbleygook". This guy is spouting flawed arguments, superficially correct in his reasoning, designed to deceive by using deceptive speech, caught in the act of obfuscating for deceptive purposes, slight objections and criticism about a trivial matter. The guy has a Masters degree in sophistry.

I employed a version of this when I quit smoking (cold turkey). I used a little mantra 'urges come & urges go' that was embedded in my 'heart'. When the urge hit it triggered that mantra (which is basically wait 10 minutes) & it worked every time & never another puff for 8 yrs so far. A form of this also worked when I lost 80 lbs 9 yrs ago & the weight never came back. I didn't go on a diet I changed my diet thus my thinking. You don’t have to do anything just because someone else is. Everyone’s journey is different. Some people get married at 20 and have a bunch of kids, some get married at 40 and have one kid ect. Do what you want, if you wanna start a business, start one. If you wanna be in a relationship be in one. If you want to just figure out what you’re doing, use your mind, ask yourself challenging questions and figure it out. Life isn’t a set path for anyone, you don’t have to do anything. Plus, you’re here watching this video which shows you do want to get better, and just from that know that you can get better. Take the time to do so :)

I don´t think that we are "supposed" to be anyone. We are who we choose to be, not who the world "expect" you to be. I have suffered from long term depression, and whenever i thought of doing something i was always thinking "What if it goes wrong" But one of the ways i managed to turn it around was instead asking my self "What if it goes right". If it goes right i get the job, i get the girl etc. Maybe start challenging your thought process, and instead of asking yourself where you belong, ask yourself where you want to belong.

Most people won’t even realize this, but in these 10 minutes he spoke in this video, he told you more information about general mentality and mindset than you even realized. It’s also the same thing how depressions, social anxiety and sadness works. None of that is real, it’s just in our head, it’s in our head because the human drives set us all these things in our head that make us feel uncomfortable, depressed etc.. it’s our job to clear our mind and manifest things into it what we want to achieve and who we want to become. Once you realize the bigger picture, you’ll wonder why people even suffer things like that and you wonder if something is wrong with you. Till you realize that 90% of people aren’t able to control there mind and are manipulating themselves.. it’s hard to help people like that I always try but that’s something that you have to find out yourself in order to really realize.. anybody else ?

At 70 years of age I have had my crushing moments in my life also.. But I also was determined not to let those moments define for me who I am.. Yes those time are hard and in private moments you grieve. But just moments and when they have passed they are passed and laid down. There is nothing you can do to change it, accept it and move on.. that is discipline. Living in the past will stunt you emotional growth and hold you back from being the person you want to be.. They did a study on mice and found that when a mouse was devoid of dopamine altogether, the mouse would literally just sit there until it died. It wouldn’t eat even when food was right beside it. It wouldn’t do anything. And in this age of technology which perpetuates increasingly dramatic dopamine addictions I think it’s vital we know about these kinds of things. There’s also a term (can’t remember what it’s called) but it’s when you repeatedly get on technology for extended periods of times over and over, and eventually you can’t get adequate dopamine responses from normal things. So you’re sort of numb to the world, and you do not find pleasure in normal things in life. Pretty scary stuff. Also one more dopamine fun fact : when you do something that gives you a dopamine response your neuro-connections for the actions you took preceding the dopamine response are reinforced based on the amount of dopamine released, and the actions you took *closest* to that dopamine response are reinforced more so than previous ones. So with any kind of addiction, the actions you’re taking leading up to and including the dopamine response , the more you’re literally hardwired to have these eventually become so fundamental to your core that it feels instinctual. This is a MAJOR reason drug addiction (or any addiction) is so devastating. (I’ve been clean 3 years now so I know first hand)

Back in 2005 I quit smoking, doing something similar. I smoked my last cigarette as late as I could stay up, because I had to work in the morning. Then I set my alarm for a bit later than I normally would. I drove truck at the time, so when I woke up, I just promised myself, if I just got the truck rolling and headed down the road for a bit, then I would stop and buy a pack. I kept doing this, promising to buy a pack at the next available stop, for the next two weeks or so. I haven't smoked since.

I wanted to buy one but unfortunately, they were just a start-up and I do not remember their name. Luckily I do not use my cell phone at all. I am considering myself fortunate to not being addicted to my phone. One thing that is really helpful I am buying cheap dumb cell phones that are so bad and limited the only thing I can do is text to my wife and call for other uses other things they can drive you crazy they are so slow they are complete junk. This helps a lot. I cut out FB and I use only YT. That is all.No other social media.

Just wait 10 to 20 mins and you'll feel differently. Sometimes you need another 10 to 20 mins but over time it becomes just one 10 to 20 min increment. Maybe eventually there will be no need to have a time increment at all.

ashish yadav Well, it's simple and not. If choice = fate, then what fate will you choose? Don't second guess yourself. Suddenly have an urge to do something new, you do it. Suddenly want to end something, you do it. It's not so much control, as it is self guidance.

  • @alecfleming373

ashish yadav Your answer is inside of passion. Something tells me that your experience has become less than human. What you study, does it fill you with energy? If not, start exploring things you've never done but wanted to do. For me, I was stuck. My depression lead to me being homeless, and so rather than being in a suicide mind set, I chose to travel. Since then, I have done things that the locals haven't done their whole lives, such as gold prospecting. It's in this quest for what speaks to my inner joy, that I forgot my suicidal thoughts. Another tip, death is an important signal for you mind from your body. Thinking on a very raw primal level, yes, death of the current movement/lack there of, can be just effective as being born again, as you start to learn, like you did as a baby. Growth isn't comfortable. But without it, we feel less than human.

Still got a way ahead of myself, but here are my two thought helping me when good ol' distraction kicks in: 1) what do I really WANT? Is it that bar of chocolate, the next YT video or another look into Facebook? If so, then do it. When I'm searching for a HowTo or need music, then do it. But if those things don't help and I in truth want something different, then to this and not something that leads me even further astray. We have to accept that our superficial thoughts and urged are not always helpful. Sometimes they get quite messy, so we need to be good guys and help ourselves to follow our true intentions, the deeper onea. They are "me", those other thingies are usually the byproducts of said deeper, basal feelings. Like a tree. If you want to find the stem, don't just brushing the superficial twigs and branches. Look for the source, and follow this path. 2) it's okay to be lazy. We wouldn't like those physical or mental drugs if they had nothing good for us. So if I just NEED said bar of chocolate or nonsense YT vid, I allow myself. Because of the ricocheting effects like in the video, it's true as heck XD but also I watch myself doing it. I try to be really aware of myself doing the distraction. Is it good? Does it help and strengthen my true path, or is it just sugar for me moment leaving me dizzier and more exhausted than before? You get the idea. Thanks for reading and sorry for grammar mistakes^^ I wish you the best, folks. Always remember: you've got this, you have everything you need already inside you, you just have to find it and learn how to use it!

Not having them in the house was the final trick for me. Get someone to hold them and give you a couple a day, until you ready for total stopping. Stopping isn't really that hard; it's just that carrying on and having another is just so easy. This vid did help me a lot I think.

Vipasanna meditation taught by gautam buddha is about observing sensation- pain or pleasure without any judgement which slowly cleanses our chitta which is convulated because of our past karma or doings.. They teach you that in between input of an environment(stimuli) and output(discomfort, for eg), there is a sensation which is responsible for the discomfort. If you become conscious of it and just observe, you are slowly erasing those self generated or subconsciously generated output from your system gradually but this require immense discipline and sadhana(work).

"Getting ahead in life is not just about doing the right things, it's about avoiding not doing the wrong things." Not to be overly critical, but you have a multiple negative going. It would be either, '…avoiding doing the wrong things,' or, '…not doing the wrong things,' not, "avoiding not doing the wrong things." You don't want to avoid not doing the wrong thing. That would mean your goal is to do the wrong thing.

I only offered another way of looking at the sentence as in afraid to take action and afraid to do something that might go wrong. We learn and grow from mistakes and sometimes rolling the dice and knowingly taking the risk of making a mistake can pay off as opposed to avoiding making a mistake...one does not play it safe and in a way, avoids not making a mistake
