Georgie boy, as someone who's shot studio for years and used to shoot on the RZ67 in studio, a few tips for you to save you time/money. Get a backdrop stand and rotate that backdrop to the left, closer to the door so that you have the window to your back, this will give you the space you need to get full length and a better space to work within. This will let you get your lighting a little further back which gives a more even coverage and ways to change up the image so you don't get bored. Lighting - a great and simple way to light this and make it look like natural light is to take the softbox off the strobe, point it at the wall beside you or behind you (possibly with a 7" reflector) and blast it, you now have a light source that's enormous and beautiful without needing a lot of extra modifiers. Backdrop - I know you love that warmer look, but if you invest in a backdrop that's closer to the white side of the colour spectrum and use either a warming filter or just edit in warmth for the golden look and you will easily have a much brighter workspace, like insanely so! The Floor - If you can, get a tin of white concrete paint and get that sucker painted, again, it will make it a much brighter space, far more inviting to work in and easier to control the lighting without having to light extra to overcome what the grey takes away. It doesn't cost much and will really transform the space, again, if you are aloud to do this. All in all have some fun, enjoy the studio and just keep shooting!

Nice photos, George! Congrats on the new studio space, excited to see what you do with it.
Congratulations on your new place! I’m super stoked on this video, thank you for sharing these comparisons. I pretty much just installed my new one light strobe and am curious to test some things myself! 👌🏼✌🏼
Definitely wanna see the series! Congrats on the new Studio! Can’t wait to see more 👍🏽👌🏽
Congratssssss! So happy for you!
Congrats on the studio. Love the portrait work you shared. Keep up your good work. You're inspiring!
I've just found your channel and I can't stop watching all your vids. So much knowledge and good vibes from you at once. It's a pleasure to watch 🌹
Congrats on your New Foto Studio! Took me a long time --Enjoy! Look forward to your work!
The series you mentioned sounds awesome, would love to see that!
Your portraits are just beautiful, man. The color tonality is just gorgeous.
Love the series idea, looking forward to it!
Congrats to getting your own studio ! That’s so awesome !
Absolutley amazing!
Oh yes! That idea for your new series sounds amazing!
Congrats on the studio man, it's so valuable to have a space you can use to create at all times!
I love that video series idea, would definitely watch!
When I was studying lighting in theatre, we often would pick items (like a still life) and then given only say, 4 light sources, and could put as much or little gel to get back lighting, side lighting...etc. And I liked a clear trash bag we had over some items, so when the multcolored light hit it at various levels, it gave an even more 3 dimensional to the scene. Like a fanciful spread in say Vogue, as your foil around the head was, that yielded a serendipitous shot. It would have been cool to see the model wrapped in the foil like armor or a metallic toga. Something to play with, "theatricality" in a shoot. Not just straight portraiture.
Diy-projects-backdrop-photo-challenge sounds great, I'd really like to see that. Not only being creative in the things you shoot and how you shoot them but also what equipment you use. Merry Christmas to you as well :)

That DIY series sounds really interesting. I like the combination of the collaboration with the model, the improvisational nature of the shoot, and the chance to do some really creative stuff with the limited constraints of what is bought. It’s a curious thing that one often finds the most inspired and creative moments when limits are imposed. I predict this series will produce some of your most memorable and unique photos. Can’t wait to see what you do and be inspired by it.
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous... Good job man!

I like the natural light, but regardless amazing portraits. Glad I found the channel.
Would love to see the result of your series idea
WOW so excited for the Choker portraits George!! Keep killing it!!
Series sounds fun and inspiring :)
really interesting at 5:15, and its likely not only because of the different light sources (natural vs. strobe) but perhaps you were also at a different aperture for each, but when working with something as bright as the strobe there's so little contrast that you can pack so much detail color gamut wise in between the highlights and shadows - it almost looks like these are on two different cameras
YES YES YES!!!!!
Absolutely agree with the new series idea. About the natural vs artificial light It depends on the mood that the shooting has, I completely adore soft and even light but it's also kind of blend gotta have more than just a pleasing light to make a interesting portrait
damn 7 people shot? I knew i was getting (James) "end of the f**kin world" vibes from you.

The set building idea is really cool, I’d be down to watch it! And if styling is a part of it as well that’d also be something you could get better at haha. And something like a set theme for each episode would be cool, like ex. “Steriotype” or a “capturing a feeling”, make it personal! Also if you ever do a shoot with an experimental setup, a live stream with just a camcorder in the corner would be interesting, like a fly on the wall type thing

The studio portrait challenge sounds like a great idea bro!
yeah you gotta make that series that would be super cool
So proud of you!!!! 🥰🥰 I want to drop by the next time I’m in London, please!!!!
I think the store-bought-prop sessions could be an interesting concept for portraiture, as every individual will pick different objects to showcase based on their personality and experiences which could make a good bit of story telling or simple character development. I really like this idea!
I just love your videos! 🖤 great work, can’t wait for the tinfoil video!
Nice Video! Makes me want to go look for studio space tomorrow! What background material did you go for? Vinyl? Paper? Trying to source some right now, but unsure what to get. Thanks!
See u one day in London!
Do iiit! The series🙌
Studio looks small but Neat 👍 With a roller blind scrim and large reflectors the daylight should work well 🙂
Thumbnail on point.
George, you gotta do that challenge series now. I absolutely love it, makes me want to do a challenge with my friends. I'm sure we'd botch it up, but you definitely could pull if off. Congrats on the studio space, it defiantly isn't easy to get a space, even if you have to share, actually I'd prefer sharing a space as well, more chances to work with others. Keep up the work, cheers -@shanecodyrutherford (I need to get my proper channel running soon)
The only square space sponsorship I’ll watch all the way through
Greatest ad ever
series sounds cool
About shooting from below: you need to compensate with their posing, to bring top (head) closer to the lens - body proportions will improve and you will have a strong, 'monumental' portrait (Peter Hurley's main tips help with that, also check Platon's portraits...)
I am very interested in the new series
grats!
can stand on an apple box with the waist level; im shorter and models are always taller than me. but i prefer the prism too
Congrats on the new studio space! Where about's in town are you and would you consider renting out the space to other photogrpahers?
Oh man this is awesome! Where did you get your studio? I find it so difficult to rent in London.
congrats
the 50 pound series idea sounds great !
The prism shot serves studio portraits so much better
Congrats on the studio space. I wondered a couple things. *how did you meter both flash and natural light shot? * you said that you would have liked to not have shoot with such a wide appeture. What was you shooting at? * I’ve a Rz and I’m thinking of getting a prism and wondered how focusing is compared to the magnifier loupe on the waist level finder. Also what screen are you using?
Pls do the series of photographers building/using items to create a themed shoot
Those natural light portraits are faaaar more appealing to me, but that's the beauty of opinions and subjectivity. I'm not a big fan of that perfectly even studio lighting look.

I think it's also to do with the depth of field, typically a shallower depth is more appealing, so maybe it's worth doing a side by side with the exact same settings
@brentsmith9411
4 жыл бұрын
@@NegativeFeedback shallower depth of field is probably part of it, but I also love the textural value of the deeper shadows in the natural light photos. As well as the non-perfect shadows on the wall. All of these things together just give the natural light photos a more intimate vibe that I love, whereas the studio light photos feel more polished. Which of course can be a good thing too. But in a direct comparison of intimate vs. polished I'll probably always go for intimate.
wow. what a cool studio george! do you think kodak gold would work for that too?
thanks a lot for the video!!! which strobe are you using?
the photos with natural light are soooooo much better to me. there's more life more feel to them.

How do you get the paper of the background of your studio? Thanks!!!
Do you usually use the prisms meter or still separate read the light with an external? Not sure how big the differences are. Thanks!
@NegativeFeedback

Cameron Boyle I use a separate meter, I don’t think my prism works
Back drop purchase link?
I think Brandon Woelfel does something similar where he goes to buy props from a thrift store to use in some way in his shoots.
The head in the tinfoil was an awesome shot
What is your metering method using the strobe on film? handheld light meter?
