I got Covid... with Diabetes.

I got a positive Covid-19 test result... and I have Type 1 diabetes. This is how it went!
Thankful I was safe and could manage at home. I know not everyone has that privilege.
I use a Tandem t:Slim X2 insulin pump with Dexcom G6 CGM in Control IQ.

Yep fully vaccinated and boosted, came down on December 22, 2021, very mild fever high of 101, my normal is in the 97 range, sore throat and cough, did not get tested immediately, doctor called in a prescription for Zpak antibiotic and took that and got a covid test when I picked up the prescription, and was positive. Symptoms were gone by the end of 5 day regiment, and I tested negative. worse thing was i missed Christmas with the family for 2 yrs in a row.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I am T1D also (over 35 years) and like you never got covid until just last month, Jan. 2022. I had all your same symptoms except I had difficulty breathing due to the shortness of breath whenever I would do something as simple as walking. My dr. is pretty sure I had the delta variant because of the difficulty with breathing. Thankfully I got early treatment and never had to go to the hospital. But I am just now (mid-Feb) starting to feel back to normal. Recovery for me was tough, but I am grateful it never got too bad. So glad to hear you are doing well also!

Oh no!! I had Covid in November 2020, and was sick and off work for 3 weeks. I ended up with mild COVID pneumonia that I was able to treat at home, thankfully I am also a nurse and knew what to ask for to treat my symptoms, and had/have an amazing Diabetic Educator that was able to guide me through taking oral steroids. That’s when my blood sugars went crazy!!! It was awful!! But I likely had long COVID because I experienced mild shortness of breath for months. Thankfully I am back to my baseline now. I’m glad you were able to recover as well as you did.

I’m a type 1 diabetic myself. I was diagnosed when I was 6 years old, I’ve had it for 10 years (11 years this February) and my family hasn’t gotten any COVID through our house yet… my grandparents over in Utah got it when they were in Salt Lake City, but the rest of my family hasn’t gotten anything yet. I also got vaccinated (1st in March, 2nd in April) I was also able to return back into high school in-person, and then in October I got a stomach bug, luckily that week was a 2-day week of school! Then in December after my Christmas break started on a Wednesday is when I got my booster, that one after I woke up the next morning felt like I got hit by a truck for part of the day, then I started to feel better after that! But myself and my family haven’t had anything yet

When I had covid back in April of 2021 it started out just like you described. I am a T1D and about 4 days in my cough got very bad Oxygen dropped to about 85 I panicked went to the er. They kept me for about 24 hours said I had covid phenomena told me the next morning after a chest xray it was getting worse then sent me home. A nurse at the hospital told me they shouldn't be sending me home and it was political. Luckily my wife took very good care of me when I got home and I was able to get back to work after 10 days out. Thank you for sharing your story with everyone.

Just tested positive this morning. I think I might have had it in late 2021 based on my symptoms, and I had one at home positive test, but three other tests from doctor's offices were negative. This time, I ran two different types of at home tests, and both came back positive pretty quickly. Anyway, blood sugars are a mess, my throat hurts, and I have a headache, cough, fever, and back pain.

I had gotten covid the exact time as you and hadn't gotten it before either. But, I have the same thoughts of who knows if I got it before. I had very mild symptoms of runny nose and sometimes stuffy nose, dry throat, cough, and very tired. My blood sugars went way up and I had to increase my basal by 25 percent over the whole 24 hours. Also, I had to increase my insulin to carb ration in order for me to eat as well. I have the omnipod so I had to just figure this out. It will be interesting to figure this out when I get the omnipod 5 which I'm so excited about, but it will be a whole new thinking from which I'm doing to manage my diabetes right now. Laura

Sorry you and your family and friends have been going through this, and glad you are on the mend and it wasn't even worse! As another with Type 1 diabetes (for 49 years) and fellow Tandem pump user (thanks in part to your reviews backing up my endocrinologist's suggestion to switch when my former Medtronic's warranty expired), I wonder if you might try saving yourself some of the mental calculations while sick by having a special "sick day" profile? Unless you already did, and found COVID required different adjustments than the usual sick day. It would be the reverse of the "half" profile I use during long biking or other intense exercise periods, halving my insulin by setting basal amounts to half, and carb ratio and adjustment factors to twice, their values in my regular profile. Glad I have my vaccine doses and booster. Thank you for sharing your experience, to know what it might be like even with those on board. Wishing all of you the best for speedy and complete recoveries.

I as well experienced a severe sore throat. Like the right side of my throat was so swollen,it was touching my uvula. It lasted a month, and was very painful 😖😣. Otherwise it didn't affect me. Blood sugars were same etc. Glad your doing better. I can't get over how beautiful you are,and keep up the good work.

Sorry you caught the bug. Dry heaving and cold sweats are never fun. On top of the Diabetes and a few other health issues, I also have had asthma about the same amount of time as the Diabetes. Let’s just say my first glucometer was the One Touch Basic. With Asthma, it’s always a great idea to have a pulse oximeter. For those with an Apple Watch 6 or newer, I have compared the Apple Watch 6 to the pulse oximeter and got the same exact information at the same time from both. The big differences between the two was the fact that I am way more likely to have my watch on hand and the information gets recorded to my Apple health app on my phone. It graphs the information so I can show that information to my HCP, like with my CGM information.

I got it near the end of June after my folks got back from a 10-day cruise (bad idea). First it was my Mom and then the rest of us a few days later. First few days were a bit rough in terms of a slight fever (100.2) and lack of appetite and messed up blood sugars. I think mine was BA.5 possibly but I can't be sure, but it was also relatively mild. The main thing I noticed was my abnormal blood sugar levels on my Dexcom CGM that were going up even though I hadn't eaten much at all all day. Regarding the fever, luckily Acetaminophen did the job. Also, we all oddly just used Antigen rapid tests and was positive after initially testing negative. They never asked to do a normal Covid test from our provider. I was out 7 days in total. I definitely had the sore throat, persistent cough that would sometimes get worse at times, but it was pretty manageable. I will say, having a CGM is so beneficial for predicting an upcoming sickness. I've noticed this several times but I can always predict a sickness before it actually hits me if my blood sugars start to get out of wack despite sticking to the same routine. So, I probably had 12-24 hours where my blood sugars were going out of wack before I actually started feeling sick. The main thing was the first day when my blood sugar started going pretty high and going up on its own even though I hadn't eaten anything most of the day.

Wow I got covid 2 days ago-a week after getting my third (booster) vaccine and my symptoms are pretty much the same as yours minus the vomiting (although I'm very nauseous). I also noticed my bgls are generally stable until I bolus for meals which seems to spike each time after I eat but I'll try increasing it to 1.5 times my food bolus ratio :) Thanks for the idea

Hey Danica well I'm glad to hear that you are now recovered from covid. I've had some very close calls with covid I have been exposed to it but I don't think I ever really caught it myself unless if I was asymptomatic. Which I doubt because I did get tested and it did come out negative not detected. I would say so far I've been lucky I am fully vaccinated I know some people feel about the vaccine I chose to not take any chances. I'm sure type 2 diabetes and covid don't play well together either.

Thank you for your great report of your encounter with covid! I am also a T1D and became infected with the delta variant in november 2021,. I was tested positive 2 days before my 70th birthday. I had been in a bowling hall with friends and 4 of us became ill. In my case I feld like having just a serious cold, with some fever, a light head ache, and a running nose. I could eat normally, had no special sugar levels, no fatigue. After a few days I lost taste and smell. I asked myself: why are my friends more seriously ill than me? One case is no case, but still I think my intake of extra vitamine D has helped.

I am a Juvenile Type 1 Diabetic. 44 yrs this May. I had my 1st vaccine on May 16, 2021 then my 2nd one on July 4 , 2021. At the end of August I tested positive for Covid19 Delta variant with pneumonia. I ended up in one hospital in isolation for 10 days on oxygen. I had no sense of smell or taste. The pneumonia got so bad I was put on reduced fluids because they were scared that all the water I was drinking would make my lungs worse. I had to have a pik (not sure of spelling) put in the inside upper arm to give me steroids & other meds. They put a catheter in because getting up to use the washroom was too hard on my whole health. After 10 days out of town I was then transferred back to our hometown hospital In isolation again for another two weeks. Etc...

I’m a T1D of 51 years. I got Covid in April of 2020. I had my first vaccination 10 days beforehand. Ran a fever, coughing and slept about 18 hours a day. Cut my insulin intake in half because I wasn’t eating anything. Drank tons of water. The interesting issue in my case was that my wife went to work and I was sleeping on the couch. She tasted me around 9am and said she had let the cats out of our garage for the day. I replied, “why did you do that. They’re supposed to be inside at night”. She then called me and asked me what day it was. I replied …Friday. She then asked me if it was day or night. I replied it was night and that she was going to spend the night at her friends cabin. She said…no it’s 9am in the morning and not night. She said DON’T MOVE, I’m coming home. That was the takeaway from my bout with Covid. 🥺
