My cricket coach said to build an innings, then he played in a match by hitting five sixes and retiring on 30 not

haha thats a quick innings to build
One of the best ways to get out to a spin bowler is to advance down the track and try and hit him out of the ground with a bat that is not either perfectly horizontal, or perfectly vertical. The plane on which you can connect with the ball after it pitched is drastically reduced if your bat comes down and through the line at an angle between 30 and 70 degrees. Your best chance of connecting is either on a 180 degree plane (when transposed on the plane of the pitch), or 90 degree bat plane. Too much can go wrong after it pitched. It can bounce less than anticpated, or it can spin more or less than anticipated. And a bat that is not perfectly straight will make you miss those past the inside or outside edge of the bat. The best place to go off full balls (even when advancing) is perfectly straight...not cow corner. And the only place you can go when advancing and its shorter than you would have liked, is to either tuck it to square, or give it the beans with a flat bat to square leg. Dont try and cut after advancing...rather bail and get back in your crease...hopefully. Unless you cut like a monster and you can decent bat on through point.

Me reading this after I went 11 overs not out (61 runs) and then getting out to a spin bowler because I went to attack him…

@@JimmyButcher-24 We've all been there, mate. But as I gained experience I made spinners my bunnies. All it takes is practice to spot the ones that float just right and will most likely pitch in the arch when you advance at them. Once knocked a spinner out of the attack after he terrorized my nr 1 through 4 for overs on end...and I smoked him for 4 sixes straight back over his head into the sight screen...in one over. I was never hesitant or scared of any spinner again.

@@CarefulAtheist good to hear that, will try to use to a similar strategy while facing spinners now 👍🏼👌
Being confident coming down the wicket is a spinners nigntmare. But the fear of wasting your weekend after running past one, particularly as you'll be asked to do square leg atfter is a hard one to get over.

Since you may not be able to have the bat straight, maybe just try keeping it still, as you do wave it around a bit before you play. I think that would help with the straight bat suggestion.

thats a great shout! i reckon its nervous energy which is why is waves about, but will certainly try being stiller

5 runs at a time is great for concentration - similar in other sports e.g. badminton mini games to 3 points in your head.

what a legend Hinders is!
I'd ignore the bat angle nonsense...Steven Smith points his at backward point and he scores runs...Shiv Chanderpaul also and Brian Lara It's about how you finish up when playing the ball that matters

Quick one on that batspeed section mate. Your hand speed is slow against bowling (as opposed to throwdowns) because you're starting your swing too early (this is also why you play in the air a lot). If you start your swing early, your only option is to slow it down to time the ball. I know the coaching is over, but get a lighter bat and practice holding your bat in the 'ready' position much longer when playing the ball, and then swinging much later onto the ball, don't worry if you miss a few, it's only a net session. You need to feel what it's like to swing later.
All this work on your batting honestly seems to be helping. You didn't nick any behind in this video!
