100% Agree I rode on regular bike and yesterday I rode 10 miles with my 89year old Dad on his Specialized Levo. He wears oxygen from a backpack when he rides and he even had a pace maker put in two months ago. His e bike changed his world and even our relationships. Over the last few years we have done many many rides together which I cherish very much. I'm so glad they came out with them. I think they are worth every penny they cost!

I discovered the E-bike paradox this year also. biking more than ever because the "E" allows me to bike when tired, headwinds, short on time, and made me a daily commuter into downtown with pedal assist to reduce the sweat factor. Yes! I completely agree with the assertion that an e-bike is not cheating any more than a lighter bike would be. I got my wife a commuter that she rides on the Cherry Creek trail, here in Denver, to get to work. She does 20 miles 3 days a week and she's working down the level of assist she uses and is getting stronger. I've also noticed that the exercise has improved her disposition. She actually likes to ride now and, best of all, I get to ride with her! All that said, I do think the use of e-bikes on mixed-use trails presents some ediquette and safety concerns, but those can be solved with some convention and good citizenship.

My ebike got me riding after 20 years. As my fitness increased I found I wanted to buy a conventional bike again. So now I ride both. My ebike does have a throttle, but the only time I touch it is to help me get quickly across a particularly busy intersection - in other words, when using it makes me safer. I agree with everything Ryan says about the joy of riding, and the freedom it offers. I get my exercise on an ebike, but I get it going twice as fast, three times as far. I do worry that the marketers stressing speed and power and some rogue ebikers who think it's fun to cruise multi use trails at 25 miles an hour are going to get the rest of us regulated or banned from some prime biking areas.

There were many e-bike operators on RAGBRAI this year who were careless, of the verge of reckless. I was riding a tandem so was already less maneuverable than regular singles. There was a couple that for some reason didn't give a crap about the flow of bicycles who came to an almost screeching halt in the left lane that caused a bunch of bikes, including me and my partner to have to hit our brake hard, then only moments later zoom away. We stopped in a town just to get away from them, they were a freaking menace.

I've been riding them for 5 years. Bought a really good one three years ago--a Gazelle and love it. I do wish it had a throttle sometimes. Throttles come in handy when trying to get going from a stop on a steep hill, or in a lot of traffic. The advantage to ebikes is when you are riding and a knee starts hurting, or you are tired, you can dial up the assist level and keep on going with less pain. I recently figured out that I can bring home a watermelon via my ebike. I live in a small, ranching/ag town but am no longer the only e-biker here. Now, I need to get going as I want to go for a ride before the heat sets in. Good luck with your new bike.

I got a 2019 specialized turbo levo and I have well over 5,000 miles on it now. It's been awesome for enabling me to do some mountain bike rides that I probably would have never done even if I was on a conventional mountain bike in my earlier years. The funny thing is I didn't get the bike because I felt I needed the assistance, I got the bike because I wanted to be able to do even longer rides than I was doing on my normal bike. I can definitely see how using the ebike for grocery shopping would be a big plus. Now you can buy that extra weight in one trip to the grocery store instead of multiple trips.

I converted my two wheeled recumbent to an Ebike, back in 2019, I've put over 7000 miles on it. I have pedal assist, but also have a throttle, which is useful for getting started from a stop sign or stop light, specially if I am pulling a trailer. Oh, yes, head winds, not much of a problem any more. Yeah, to replace my ebike I think would cost about 3000. And lastly, if you have a bike you love, it fits you well, and its easy to maintain, and you want a Ebike, convert your bike by using a hub motor. I did that with mine, a hub motor on the front wheel. Works great. Have fun and stay safe.

Now I know why I’m a patreon of your channel and it’s because you produce such awesome, personal and down to earth content. Prior to a couple of years ago I was an avid outdoor photographer who did a lot of hiking, often around 16 miles a day to get to cool locations such as waterfalls and animals and such and 16 miles was pretty good for a then 56 year old guy. But then I started having trouble with walking and having lots of pain in my right knee and eventually having pain from my right hip down to my toes. Going to the doctor and being sure it was from a torn meniscus from years ago I was diagnosed with having a bad hip and after X-rays and a MRI it showed that my hip joint was bone on bone with no cartilage left. My hiking and backpacking days were over. 😢 So last year my wife and I purchased Vivi touring ebikes which are more like a hybrid bike, with 26 inch mountain bike tires \ street tires and from just watching your video they must be a class 2. They have a top speed of 20 mph and have both pedal assist and throttle with three levels, one being the slowest and three the fastest. And they’re equipped with 7 Shimano speeds. Last summer we were just riding occasionally, usually on vacations. This year I’ve been riding weekly. And although my hip replacement surgery is in October, last week I actually rode 10 miles with the motor off and riding it like a normal bike and besides being fun I really got a great sweaty workout. And the main reason I’m telling you all this, is riding bikes doesn’t hurt my hip and now I look forward to riding my ebike. Hopefully after I recover from hip surgery and get somewhat back to “normal” I can eventually get a Priority 600x like yours although I’m quite a bit older than you so riding across Europe probably won’t happen but because of you, I can dream about doing that, or riding Switzerland and eating chocolate filled tortillas. Thanks for inspiring so many of us and hopefully you’ll read this comment even though you made this video a year ago. Have a great day wherever you are and I pray that you will always be safe. 😊😊

I do everything from commuting, errands, long distance fund raisers and bike travel. I have a standard Bike Friday travel bike. In 2020 I ordered a second with front hub e-assist (class 1) It took 9 months to arrive, due to the pandemic. These are custom made. It’s light enough for me to carry up and down stairs. I’m 68 and under 5 feet tall! Having since had knee issues and 2 knee repair surgeries, this bike has made it possible to continue doing what I love. Thanks Ryan for chiming in with your positive vibes. Regards to your mom.

I use my e-bike for commuting. I like the fact that I can use lots of assist on the way to work and not arrive sweaty. On the way home I turn off the motor and ride extra distance taking the leisurely route home. I totally do not miss my car! Boulder city and County need to get their act together to unify which paths ebikes can go on. especially boulder creek between arapahoe and valmont.

Great video Ryan. I got an ebike last winter. I'm 71. Been riding analog previously., and still do at times. I started feeling the need to ease up on the push up the hills and be a bit easier on the knees. I usually ride in assist 1, and 2 or 3 up hills depending. When i'm on the flat or slight downhill I've started just off the assist till i need it again , to save battery. I'm doing rides with hills i normally wouldn't do unless i was willing to do allot of walk a bike, and at 71 thats no fun anymore. As you have said you can still get a workout if you need it, it's all up to your assist level selection. Keep up the good work. Cheers from BC.

Currently trying out my mom's Current - a sweet bike. Agreed that throttle e-bikes mostly eliminate the exercise aspect of cycling (I've noticed that I usually almost exclusively use the throttle), but I still think they're great if they get people out of cars. Some people don't really want to pedal or don't want to pedal all the time, and I find myself using a throttle e-bike more often than a pedal-assist because it allows me to put in as much effort as I want (including zero effort, if that's how we're feeling). No traffic, no emissions, and a far lower carbon footprint than even an electric car (with a battery 100+ times as big and 10x less efficient)! Oh, and affordable, so if we got our act together as a country one could imagine communities where people do almost all their trips on bikes and e-bikes!

I've been riding ebikes for almost 5 years now, I love that I can do my job commute which includes a lot of climbing in my work clothes. Got a similar setup to yours with a gates carbon belt drive and an enviolo hub, I guess the biggest difference is that it doesn't have indexed gears, so it's very easy to dial in for whatever cadence you want to sit at. Absolutely love not having to mess around with oiling a chain and adjusting the derailleur constantly, it's incredibly low maintenance.

Thanks for this video Ryan! I have had my ebike since 2019 and it has literally saved my life. Before I got it, I couldn't walk a mile without being totally exhausted. I have always had a weight problem and it's only gotten worse with age (I am 59). Now, with my ebike, it is not uncommon for me to ride 60 miles in a day. I also try to do 15 miles 3 days a week during the lunch hour at work. Mine is a class 2 cargo bike (although the top speed is roughly 30mph). I have upgraded the stock equipment to include a 1000 watt mid drive motor and a Sturmey Archer 5 speed IGH. I can carry up to 4 batteries although I usually just carry 2. I use the throttle just to initially take off. The only thing I wish I had is the belt drive. This thing will climb a steep hill effortlessly yet still makes my heart race and the sweat pour out of me. Best thing I ever bought!

I am now able to do many things I would have never considered on a regular bike such as doing some bike touring ( I just finish a 175 mile ride on the ohio to Erie Canal path in Ohio ) When I tell people about my riding their comments are usually but your riding an bike isn't that cheating, I always welcome them to take my bike for a spin and decide for themselves. I also work in a bike shop and when people see me and what I do they do think twice. I am 65 years old, over weight with more health conditions than I wish to mention. Ebikes get more people out and riding.

Most people ride bicycles to burn calories and for cardio health. On a 175 mile ride with an ebike, you are getting the same workout as riding a motorcycle. But, to each his own. If that's what you want to do, go for it. I'm 70, and in the best shape of my life. I ride with guys in their 30's and they can't believe how fast I ride. But it's not about competition, for me, it's about longevity. Many of my friends are in nursing homes.

This year I got a second e-bikes with a belt drive and internal hub. Last week friends came to visit. They rode the e-bikes (and loved them) while I rode my folding bike. They are not confident riders so I was able to keep up with them. Hopefully this encourages them to return to cycling. I like seeing folks older than me riding and I like seeing people with kids on the rear seat of an e-bike. It's much better than kids sitting in a car's backseat.

Hi Ryan .. so I loved your ebike video and am stoked that you are a fan and even more stoked that you and your mom get out and ride together. I am one of the many converts out there, having major knee surgery and arthritis kept me off my bike for the most part of the last 20 years. I bought an Aventon Aventure in June 2021 and have already put 2900 fun loving miles on it. I get that sense of youthful joy you talk about every time I get on the bike. My only comment is to say that many people in my age bracket (67) with some physical limitations, use that throttle to 'push off' from a dead stop, and other than that, never tought the throttle while riding. I have tried some mid-drive non-throttle bikes and found that especially when trying to start riding when stopped on even a small uphill, it is really difficult and even a bit dangerous (if at an intersection) to do without the throttle. And by the way, yes, I am cheating, I am cheating an earlier demise by riding my ebike. Bravo, Ryan!

Hi, Ryan. Thanks for another great video. I am 70 years old and own a Specialized Kenevo SL e-bike. It is an electric enduro bike with 170mm of travel, mountain bike tires, electric shifting, and an electric dropper post. I have a blast doing small jumps and drops, blasting around berms, and riding across skinnies. But that is just the beginning. I have many more miles on it riding on the pavement. Weather permitting, I got out on the country roads near my house a few times a week. I typically ride from 30 to 60 miles. Usually on low or no assist until I get fatigued and then just increase the assist so I can keep going. I would love to ride my bike to do errands. The reason that I don't is that, in my area, there are no bike racks or other good means to lock up a bike. My bike cost over $10,000 so I would hate to see it stolen. I still haven't fully gotten over the bad feeling I get when I think of your Trek 1120 being stolen. As punishment, bike thieves should be forced to work for ten years with half their salaries going to purchase bikes for people whose bikes were stolen. Thank you for inspiring so many people to ride bikes.

Works great for a little extra help on hills but overall pedal assist at the midpoint setting 2 or 3 seems to work really well. Get outdoors and have some fun everyone. Hey Ryan, i’ve had my E bike since February and I’ve already put 1500 miles on it it was kind of rough to start with I had to upgrade the brakes in the front fork that sort of thing because I got it online and it was pretty basic. To give you an idea of how much economy it brings I filled up my car a month ago, the car stays parked most of the time I ride the bike not only for enjoyment but running all of my errands including picking up groceries like today. I have a rear rack and a front rack with panniers on both ends and I fill them to the limit. Two days ago I went up to the Mount Hood wilderness in the car and parked it at a trailhead. I unloaded my E bike with all of my camping gear and rode up the trail to a primitive campsite next to the lake. I had everything I needed on the bike. I did go back to pick up my camp chair and folding backpacking camp table. However on the way back I carried everything in one trip. It was no problem! The bike is extremely sturdy and I pedal about 80% of the time with the pedal assist off. I use the pedal assist only when climbing extremely steep hills or if I’m real tired. I’ve lost over 20 pounds since purchasing the bike. One nice thing about when I was up camping by the lake going back-and-forth on the trail I was able to ride 2 days and still had a almost full battery. Mine is a class2 which means it does have a throttle which kind of helps out if you need to accelerate out into the turn lane where there’s heavy traffic etc. I’m glad you are so excited about your E bike! Keep up the good work I look forward to future videos from you. Your friend Walter, Portland Oregon

I loved your message about Ebike! I to i’m an avid bike rider. I commute and all my vacations are bike touring. After years of calling all E-bikers cheaters I purchased a cargo E-bike for my daily shopping and honey dos. So far I’m loving it. Dont get me wrong I still love my titanium Salsa Fargo for my adventures and fun. My E-bike will replace my car for the shopping duties. Love your videos. Just a side note my wife and I will be bike touring this September from Venice to Montenegro. No E-bike on that trip all leg power. ;-)

Very hilly area and I just got tired of riding hills all the time, so didn’t ride much for about 15 years. Been riding my class-1 and -3 ebikes 3-4 times most weeks during the last two years. Now I don’t have to maintain high fitness for the hills and instead can just enjoy riding. The biggest benefit for me is being able to control heart rate and avoid a lot of unnecessarily high bpm. So nice to look forward to rides again.

I agree that eBikes are better for some and the perspective that you described makes a lot of sense. From my perspective, we have electric motor mountain biking on our local trails near Los Angeles. Nothing wrong with that but not to point out the obvious, but a short 2-3 mile climb then the same descent on a pedal assist motorized mountain bike is about the equivalent of guy using a riding lawnmower for his small yard. Yes it’s good that he’s outdoors and yes it’s more exercise than holding a remote control and flipping channels. All I’m saying is eBikes are something that serious cyclist will probably always avoid unless they’re filling the transportation need or have specific use cases that they want that power assist.

I can do 10 2-3 mile climbs a day easy on my ebike, so just more fun. You can work as hard or as little as you want. Ride up hill with no assist, my bike weighs 60lbs, there is your work out... What about all the trails with rides up, or ski lift? seems no better than ebike. Borrow one for a week, then come back and comment. I still ride a regular bike, but love love love my ebike.

@@joeshmoe7967 it’s good that you are outdoors riding and you get the benefits of regular exercise. I have rode a fat tire eBike and a cargo eBike at the bike demo InterBike in Las Vegas. They’re fun but for me I wouldn’t ever want to use one, I’m choosing to keep my stamina and keep fit. If I want another toy then I would buy one for fun but never think of it as something for fitness. It’s like buying an Apple Watch and making daily step for beyond 10k steps. Sure it’s healthier than sitting all day but it’s not really a fitness plan.

@@hardmtnbiker I don't agree with you. A fitness plan that you will actually do is a good one. When you know you have power back-up, you'll take that ride even if you are tired, etc. For myself, as a senior (in good health), I look at a bicycle as a tool to take me further than I can walk, and an E-bike is a tool that can take me further than I can ride an unpowered bicycle. There are miles of trails in the LA area, an E-bike makes it possible to get into the back country and/or see places you've never seen before. Just like a car, or an aeroplane, it opens up a whole new world.

I absolutely agree with all the good points you make about e-bikes, but I do have a bit of a problem with more than a few of the people that use them. You kind of introduced something just after the 7:00 mark about people that haven't ridden in years. It is certainly great that they have found a way to get out more, but since many likely haven't ridden in a long time, they seem a bit clueless with regard to trail etiquette and the whole share the trail thing. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I have been "buzzed" by an e-bike rider who comes from behind and passes without warning while sometimes not allowing very much spacing as they go by. I tend to ride on paved trails at 19/20-ish mph, and they totally blow by me like I'm standing still. BTW - I am 65, and though there have been a handful of younger offenders, the majority of the folks I am referring to are older than me. Maybe we could use a good PSA on this.

Awesome video Ryan. I got my Ebike in August of 2020 and have not looked back since. I am 50 and never thought I would be riding a bike at this age. I bought a Tern HSD cargo bike and it has been a game changer for me. I do all my errands by bike and we even sold our second car in February. I watched you video years ago of your mom getting her bike and it really inspired me to research and purchase my own. I have almost 3500 miles on my bike so far and I agree that I spend more time and do more mileage on my bike because I enjoy riding it so much. Not only is it fun, but It makes me want to be outside and moving. Some of the large things I have carried on my ebike include a full size vacuum cleaner, my groceries each week, camp chairs for when we ride bikes to dinner and want to eat outside, and boxes of donations for the local thrift store.

Getting an e-bike after my recent transfer from Denver to the Springs has been excellent. I spent three years commuting between Denver and Colorado Springs. I’m glad to mothball my Jetta and to be getting out to see the Springs. It reminds me of me being a kid again and just biking random streets to explore and come across little cafes or bakeries. I did get my first big crash the other day (conveniently, I was already on the way to my doctor’s).

Health problems that cause bouts of weakness and fatigue rob my confidence for long trips or heavy cargo with my standard bike. The trouble is, I need the commuter-grocery run bike like yours, but I also need my bike to be my adventure machine. I'd love to be able to do a little bike-packing! Is there a model you would recommend that can do it all?

Okay, sound like you are the perfect candidate to convert the bike you have, to an Ebike. I suggest a geared hub motor, they are easier on a battery then say a direct drive magnetic motor. I put a front wheel with a hub motor on my bike and I love it. Plus if something does go wrong. I can drop the motorized wheel, put my non motorized wheel on, and I'm good to go while repairs are made to the motorized wheel. Now depending on how much you weigh, or how much you need to haul/carry, will depend on the size of the motor you need. The standard hub motor is 350 watts, and has a load capacity of about 350 pounds, so take that into account. You can get motors all the way up to 1000 watt. Lastly, do not get it from Amazon, yes they are cheap, and thats the problem, plus lack of customer support. Okay, thats it, if you have questions, feel free to ask me. Stay safe.

No car? Ebike is a no brainer. I use mine for every task that doesn't need my truck to haul. 5000km in the first year. So much fun, and just so practical. Now have a trailer so even hauling is not out of the question. Your main task is finding the one that fits your needs and budget. In my opinion no need to spend beyond $2k. Mine was under $1500 Canadian. I have seen ones for less that were decent. - Cheers

Thank you Ryan for validation on what I have been saying about the benefits of Ebikes. When you talk about throttle most of my Ebike friends rather pedal. I have a throttle on my class 2 Ebike. Despite having a throttle I still love the pedal. The throttle my friends and I find is mainly a helpful tool at a dead stop especially on a hill or when I need to cross the road quickly and not have to change my pedal assist level.
