I got access to Google's latest developer tool called Project IDX. It is Google's take on a new form of developer workflow, but the real question is does it have what it takes to beat VS Code and Microsoft in the developer tool realm? Here are some of my initial thoughts.

Seems great for people starting out or doing side projects, but I'd be really weary about using this for any kind of tech business (though they are not likely the target audience at this time). Some questions I'd want answered: How is the internal network and vpn of a company supposed to work? (Related to the above) How am I going to access my code from a repo only hosted on an internal network? Google has a terrible reputation for collecting and capitalizing on user data, how can I know they aren't scraping proprietary code to train their AI or will misuse the code provided? Assuming that it is encrypted, what level of encryption will my data and code have? What safeguards are there in the event of a breach? This does after all open the possibility to "hack the mainframe" again.

It sounds good and I like the idea that I could develop a complex app in Google's cloud space using my arm-based Chromebook, but Google is their own worst enemy. They have launched so many good things in the past, like their own excellent line of Chromebooks, Stadia ... the list goes on, but they have no staying power. They lose interest, and then what they launched with a flourish disappears at some later date. After Stadia I moved across to XBox game pass and stream games in Microsoft's cloud space, so Microsoft won again!

  • @Yayaloy9

Gonna be honest, Chromebook and Stadia sounds good until you see it. It's trash. Low end PC is already in the market with a lightweight Linux distro can easily contest with any Chrome OS. And if you go on about linux complexity then you have never used linux before. Stadia, unless you have Nasa wifi speed, you won't be playing it anytime soon. Yes I love Google for they are trying to make technologies accessible for the low end people like us. I do respect it very much. But some of them just won't worked. I am pissed with Google for making trash laptop mainly. They should have made a high end laptop with their own OS that could compete against Macbook battery life and their qualities. Look at the Pixel series, arguably the best android devices you could find. Imagine a laptop that could compete against the Macbook battery life with an open source OS or just plain old window? Imagine the possibility!!!!! But no, stupid Chromebook. I'm in third world country but I would rather install my kid a linux distro if it ever comes to that time.

I think this is really cool, and a good play from Google. I've always thought it was odd that they never tried harder to capitalize on their developer ecosystem. You're totally right, Microsoft is absolutely dominant in the new-developer space. Almost any bootcamp is going to tell you to use VS Code, a lot of engineering degree programs have moved from teaching Java to C# and again recommend VS Code or VS. Not to mention Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub. I think it's great that Google is trying to launch a competitor here, especially a web-based one so that people can finally put to rest the "can you code on a Chromebook?" and encourage additional participation in Google's products. I am a little concerned though about it being entirely cloud based. There are times when I'm disconnected from the internet and still need to work on a project and while those definitely aren't my normal days, I don't know if I could adopt a new environment that's wholly dependent on my internet connection. I do hope there's a desktop version available when this launches. I could seriously see this being a great contender to VS Code's ubiquity and dominance with or without a native desktop app regardless.

My journey through programming had me having more internet connectivity issues than having access to something to code on. That was always the major limiter. I'm talking... I had a pentium series cpu in 2012. So a total potato, but I could cook. I built a 2D and 3D game engine without internet on that thing. Years prior ~08 I had a 1.3ghz single-core cpu which I didn't have for a while. So I used a 300mhz dell laptop... in 2008. I could write all the code I wished. On the 1.3ghz I could run multiple low-memory virtual environments. The 300mhz laptop turned into my wifi router at some point when I created my own crossover cable. Before that was possible, I was making websites with css, javascript, and php on a PSP. You read that right. So this concept of hardware being a limiting factor and not internet is hogwash. Smartphones are like a PSP-9000 these days and if you are crafty, you can use one like a desktop more capable than the toaster I had in 2012. Who in their right mind just hands the keys to all their code over to google? They can paywall you, block you, steal from you, spy on you, etc. I just don't understand why anyone would consider that option. Be it google or any other company. Not to mention, google has a reputation (that is, a repeating history) of offering things for free, becoming market dominant, and then price gouging. Cutting the coin purses and tools right out of their peasants hands. So naw, I'm good. To be clear, I'm not attacking the uploader. Its a good video and I dropped a like (as you should) for bringing up the discussion. Also I'm sporting Webstorm these days. VSCode was getting unreliable and laggy. Still on a 2013 cpu ;)

I think if your laptop is not fast enough to run a *text editor*, you *really* need a new laptop! If you're going to offload some heavy processing, I'd say you should deploy those heavy bits to a set of containers in the cloud. That should be do-able without these changes to the IDE...

A proprietary cloud-only solution from a company that has a history of axing products isn’t exactly a killer to an open-source solution like VS Code.

Thanks for the video and this sounds very interesting. I like seeing the Dart/Flutter emphasis. I have a lot of interest in people wanting Dart/Flutter development done, went way up in 2023. I would take a good look at this just for that reason. Enough VS Code like to just jump in. I do most development by spinning up Linode servers, if I can use Google resources using this tool and not spending money, I would be very interested.

@@RIPenemie I'm looking at it from a sustainability front. If I can buy a system that runs on minimal hardware, but I can throw Linux on it for ten plus years, I'll create less waste. In theory, at least. I'm all for paying a subscription so long as the price is manageable, and I get a great deal of value from it. Even better if my clients cover the cost.

I like creating a docker-compose environment that i can connect to with vs-code. I always end up extending the dockerhub image with specific applications, so the total application is src plus dockerfiles plus compose plus env. If i can't replicate that in a cloud environment then i won't use it
