I GOT ACCEPTED TO BYU!!

I received an email that Brigham Young University made a decision... I was accepted for the 2019 Fall semester! I am beyond excited to begin this new chapter of my life! I am so thankful for all the help and support I've received to get to this point!
I'll be moving out to Provo, Utah in the fall and until then, I plan on working. It's going to be exciting!

How do you like being in the bottom 10 of the least diverse major universities in the U.S.A.? BYU is a white school ! 2% of the BYU student body is Asian. 6% of the U.S. population is Asian. 82% of the BYU student body is white. 60% of the U.S. population is white. 97% of the BYU faculty is white! There is no ethnic diversity at BYU! The graduation rate of Asians going to BYU is 77%. The graduation rate of Asians going to the top ranked universities in the nation is between 95% to 99%. Just wondering, since you are Asian, and even if you are a Mormon, do you feel kind of out of place there?

Of course it can be tough to not have as many asians around but I make the most of it. It doesn't bother me at all. You create your own experience here, or at any other college.

@@WanchaiChab Are you happy at BYU? Do you feel out of place? Have you ever been given a 2nd look, or felt discriminated at, because you are not white? Are you able to get dates?

@@WanchaiChab Good for you! We had a tour of BYU last year or 2 years ago. After the tour, my daughter told me this: "Everybody is white!" She felt out of place! She later told me that she is not thinking of going to BYU because she thinks she would feel out of place there, even though she is Mormon. We also had a tour of USC (#30), Harvey Mudd College (#23), Caltech (#8), Fort Lewis College (#634), UNM (#567), & NM Tech (#406). All their tours were better than BYU's, and those schools are more ethnically diverse than BYU. I am Navajo, my daughter is half Navajo, half Chinese/Filipino. We are LDS from Shiprock, New Mexico. She is part of the LDS seminary at San Juan College High School (SJCHS) in Farmington, NM. Even at the LDS seminary, she feels out of place. The white LDS boys walk in front as they head to SJCHS from the LDS seminary. The white LDS girls walk together behind the white boys. Then my daughter walks by herself behind the white LDS girls. That's the way it is, if you understand. My daughter has a 4.2 GPA, and hasn't missed a day of school since kindergarten. Really! She wants to be a Biomedical Engineer. She has all straight 'A's except for 1 'C' in 'Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus'. My daughter needs to go to a school where the student body has ethnic diversity. It would be better for her. These are the universities that she is thinking of going to. In order of priority, they are: Stanford (#2), USC (#30), Harvard (#1), Yale (#3), Princeton (#5), Rice (#21), Caltech (#8), MIT (#4), Harvey Mudd (#23), and lastly, the U.S. Naval Academy (#24). As a backup, if she doesn't get into the university that she wants, her last choice would be NM Tech (#406). I want my daughter to be happy. BYU (#95) is a good academic school, that pushes an LDS belief ! White LDS students will see BYU as their Dream school ! White LDS students have no problems in adjusting to BYU. They will fit in. They will melt in. They will go on LDS missions from BYU. They are also rich (mostly)! Others, possibly blacks especially, might feel out of place there, since Mormons did discriminate against blacks from the time of Brigham Young to Spencer W. Kimball. The few Native Americans at BYU probably hang together, trying to make it. The graduation rate of Native Americans at BYU is 41%. I hope you succeed there! But once you graduate from BYU, the real world is not LDS, it's worldly, atheistic in a way, especially if you head for the mega cities, like Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York! About 50% of the Mormons who graduate from BYU become inactive in the LDS Church. God bless you, and your future! Note: I got my college rankings from Forbes college rankings.

@@harrisonlapahie3483 I see you have done some research! That is important when making a decision, especially if you're looking for diversities. Sounds like your daughter is really smart and hard-working! That's great! Here's how I see it. Sure there are times where its hard to feel included. But I can guarantee that it's only a small percentage of students that discriminate. In fact there is a great Native American Dance club here and I know several of the members. Some are 100% Native, some half and some are white. But they are outstanding people and they love sharing the culture with everyone. BYU is actually making some progress to encourage other ethnicities to come here and feel included. It's something I want to be a part of so I do what I can. So yes, it can be difficult at first, but I definitely think one can make an impact on the student body if they have the desire. And it seems to me like your daughter is the go-getter type. So whatever she ends up choosing, she'll do great. She'll make things happen. I hope she's able to make a decision and be happy with it! Yes, that is true. I grew up in California and I know what it's like. That's why I think its great to be surrounded by people with different backgrounds yet adhere to LDS standards. They help me to prepare even more for life after college! Thank you for stopping by and watching! God bless your family and future as well!
