I Got a Free Subaru Legacy! What Should I Do With It?

Say hello to my new project, a 1998 Subaru Legacy that loves to stall! Apart from some major oil leaks, some suspension issues, a flat tire, and that propensity to stop running in the middle of busy intersections-this old Subaru is actually in decent shape. Ever since I took part in the Gambler 500 Rally in a Legacy wagon, I've wanted another Subaru to transform into a mild off-roading rig. Should this be the one? Let's take a look at this 23 year old Legacy and figure out what I should do with it!

As you've explained, there is nothing special about this car. It's not low mlieage. It's not rare. It's not in god condition to begin with. Feel free to go crazy with it. Take it to the wilderness!

As per the stalling issue. If it is doing it when you come to a stop and you are just idling, then clean out the throttle body/butterfly valve. Carbon buildup on there can cause it to stall.

I'd like to see it restored with a paint job. Even if you add the parts from the last one. I like the body style, plus most of them are wagons but I like the sedans, and I like the color.

I think keep the paint the way it is, but clean it up a little. Put some BF Goodrich KO2s on the factory wheels, do a small suspension lift, and put a rack on the roof. Make it a fun "street off-road cruiser".

Great cars. Being the EJ22 it should run forever. They don't blow head gaskets like the NA EJ25, which is the only Subaru engine that actually has prevalent head gasket issues. It is a bit more common in the 97+ EJ22 though. These are suuuper easy to work on and have relatively few problems. Occasionally need front ball joints, axles, or wheel bearings. Looks like this one would clean up alright and be a good daily for someone TBH. 179K is what we would call broken in here in VT. Being rust free, this is actually worth quite a bit to the right person. I'm actually selling a 99 wagon right now with 245K and it's still fantastic. 😁 The leaks are pretty standard, most are easy fixes. Overall though, like you said, they aren't super rare. Just rare without tons of rust. Do an off road build the right way could be really cool. Idle issue is likely just IAC or something very simple. There are only a few things that can cause that. Engine sounds healthy! Have fun. ☺️ Unfortunately that EJ22 has single exhaust port heads, so bolting on a turbo isn't as easy as the pre 97.

Give the car a detail, change the headlight covers (you might as well change the bulbs while you're there), paint the car, change the wheels (and the tyres, maybe), check for mechanical and electrical issues (especially the head gaskets). There's a lot to do to this car to make it look good. Then modify it whichever way you want and take it rallying.

Definitely would enjoy seeing you off road it and you have some of the stuff already just use it no point in wasting more money besides getting it mechanically sound. Also you should have someone or a fan send you a boat load of stickers to spruce it up once you clean it. Have fun till it blows up then move onto one of your existing cars

The Legacy Sedan did have a lifted variant in that generation which they called the "SUS" (To you Among Us meme makers, this means "Sport Utility Sedan"), so such a custom build isn't so out of the ordinary and it would benefit it's all-season capability.

Man, I used to have one of these! It was a '99 and burgundy, so I named it "Ruby the Suby". And you're right... the 2.2 liter motor was pretty slow but reliable for me. The only problems I had were the valve cover gaskets (that's probably your oil leak, too) , that same window switch, and the wheel bearings. It was my first AWD car and the grip was awesome in wet weather. Man, do I miss that car. 😕

Maybe it's just me, but there are some brands, that don't make any real sense as sedans. You either have to have a station wagon or none at all. Don't get me wrong, Subarus are kinda cool. Never owned one but I've driven some. But a Subaru has to be a station wagon. For me it's the same with Volvos and Audis. I always wonder, why the original owner didn't go for a station wagon? How do you guys feel about that?

If you off-road it, it'll almost certainly die. I'd get a cheap paint job and fix it up a little and just enjoy it for what it is. They said they wanted it to have a good send off. I don't think off-roading it was what they probably had in mind. You could also sell it after you fix it to someone who'll take care of it properly and even make a little money off of it while you are at it.

The fact that you also had a '98 Legacy means an off roader was meant to be! Get a friend with an OBII scanner and get that stalling issue figured out. It could be as simple as a dirty MAF or throttle body as well as possibly a fuel pump

As much as I respect, even love old cars, and root for the oddities - hey I had an Isuzu Stylus, anyone know what that was? (But have respect, it was the XS; suspension by Lotus :) - this one does nothing for me. It's an undistinguished leftover from the jellybean era in its most uninteresting trim - if you can get some use out of it with mods, my vote is go for it. In my world it would become tomorrow's fridge. Right up there with a Tempo (yup had one of those too).

subaru's are over al good and nice cars, turning it into another off road car sounds fun. but is it rear wheel drive or all wheel drive? if its rear wheel drive you should turn it into a drifter car. or make it madmax style, apocalyptic style rat look. and if you do wanna go on with an off road car make it more rally style, wide body mods and hella halogen lights in front and a big spoiler on the back. or make it rally dakar style, with that rack and put a wheel and fuel tank on top and another wheel on the back and a roll cage in it.
