I got a Balmuda Toaster, but I'm not sure I get it.

The Balmuda Toaster Oven does things slightly differently - Is it a revolution in toasting or a case of the Emperor’s New Toaster. I imported one to the UK to find out.

FAQ
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

  • @elektroger

    @elektroger

    3 жыл бұрын

I don't know to much about the barber's profession and it's details (however, my grandmother actually worked most of her life in a saloon), but as far as I know, first you cut the coarse way, then you trim and adjust with the scissors where you missed something. So, he either tried to limit the outlines firs, but then, you need to do that all around, not just in the back, or he wasted some time, pretending to do work, so he could justify the price tag on the manhours, by taking the time with the money. Imagine, if he could get all work done in 5 minutes, maybe throw something fancy to it, like personalize or maybe improving the haircut, maybe some lotion... That may have sweetened the deal. This way, because of COVID-19, it's hard to cover all expenses with less customers, unless you raise the prices, especially, since in most countries, the taxes haven't got lowered and in some places, same with the rents. By the way, nice review of the toaster @Matt. I think, you managed to capture the essence. The thing with the professional reviews is, that not always cover the needs of the common people. Who knows, maybe in the future, they might improve on the design, to make it more affordable, easy to clean... more practical. As you concluded, it's just a fancy, expensive toaster, but it takes more time and not change the taste, not even a bit.

We use the toaster daily (in Tokyo now). This toaster excels with very thick bread (even frozen), also with stuff that does not fit a regular vertical toaster, like frozen pizza. Yes, there is hype in all Balmuda products, mostly due to the looks rather than the real features, the toaster however works. This toaster was made for most fussy customer market,Japan. Here, one white bread slice can fetch 1 usd or more (branded of course) so there you go, that is Balmuda country. Great video by the way!

I have a Sennheizer (had to look at headset side to spell it correctly ^^) and a friend who thought that was bullshit turned hi head when heard a sound on his right. It's not even on the expensive side... Now, if you don't have proper hearing, then that's completely moot. Kind of the same with food and taste. Most people don't have full taste, so, they quickly say that food is bland. In the end, the best is to try out. For toasters, unfortunately it's not really possible. But for audio equipment and some food, some shop allow to test! Then you've products that seems really good, even when you test them. Then later, you discover it's pure shit. Lighting equipment fall in that category. When you learn about CRI, you don't look at lighting with variable color the same way and you understand why some people buy a white light with gels. So, to benefit from prosumer products, you already need to have some understanding or abilities. Note that I can't say anything about the Balmuda Toaster. My point is that you should not brush away specialized products as "gimicky".

@@electrictroy2010 If you have a low signal-to-noise ratio (more noise than data), then throughput decreases a lot and sound can be garbled as a result. So, you may want gold plated if you don't want the connector to act as an antenna, heat, or corrode. (and equally spaced rods are really good to amplify caught signals. Hence why antennas look like rattles!) Also, an antenna can emit too. So, you don't want back channels. (Two equipment communicating when they shouldn't)

Steam (pan of water) is actually great for toaster ovens but apparently not for toast likely because it cooks so quickly it doesn't have time to dry out much but when used to fully cook raw food to completion they tend to function somewhat like dehydrators especially when using convection. Adding steam softens the food, cooks it more evenly, and helps prevent sticking especially without oil or less oil it can dramatically improve results, but it can be finicky as there aren't recipes for it and all machines are different. One thing to try is covering food fresh from the toaster oven to lock in the steam for five to ten minutes to rehydrate and release the food. It's a game changer for oil free you often don't need non stick cookware and I tend to only use stainless and ceramic now.

@@electrictroy2010 The only purpose of gold plating on cables is corrosion resistance. I literally had standard nickel plated cables where the contacts completely corroded away while laying 10yrs in some box, now go plug that into something and rub all that abrasive corroded oxide against the contacts of the equipment, which are almost always gold plated for longevity, now you sentenced that equipment (or atleast that specific port) to certain death in a couple yrs as the previously protecting gold plating is rubbed off, but worse there is no nickel plating, so you exposed bare copper which corrodes super quick. Now I may be an extreme case because we have humidity here regularly in the range of 70-90%, so stuff corrodes super quick here, but still even in dryer places corrosion can happen over time. Gold plating is super cheap, it costs cents for the manufacturer, and if you pay a premium for it, thats on you.

haha, agree with your opinion 100%. I am a Korean chef who works in Australia for over 10 years. My folks(Korean folks) have some difficulties when they cook some of western bread based recipe. They don't have certain bar of making bread. I know I need to care about my tone but it's true. They willing to fix some details about steaming rice (ex, put some more of water or less in rice cooker), but when they hit up some bread, they can't think about adding some water on the side of combi. All my respect, this is not about racial thing! I am also a Korean who just lived in Australia for long time. When Balmuda toaster was popped up in Korean market, I also heard it could be kind of marketer's triumph of Balmuda company. The verbal marketing is huge in Korea nowadays. As a evidence, Balmuda launched a branch in Korea for only Korean consumers. That's not usual thing. Korean market is not big enough to expend branches like Chinese market. Personally speaking, this gadget is overrated and too expensive thing to consider of its own function. Sorry about my English if you are not comfy with my English writing.

Just saying, the best barber that I went to was an older guy, close to retiring, working out of a little room on the side of a pizza place. He wasn't in a rush, but didn't charge what I felt was a high amount. Also friendly. The only downside was that he smoked and you could tell that. The hair cut was spot on, not a single hair out of place. After he was forced out of his little room, I tried another place that was recommended in this area, and the hair cut was no where was good, although still cut, and the price was about the same. There was just something about how that one guy did hair that made it stand out.

Boo to the naysayers, the Techmoan "old man stories" are part of the channels ambience. But to stretch the toast/hair analogy a bit: I have long thick hair (I've not bothered to have it cut since before lockdown) and with my hair it is possible to truly cock it up and I need to go to someone else to get it "repaired (this has happened at least twice). Hair as short at Mat's just needs running over with the clippers and even trying to do something with scissors is kinda pointless. Maybe this is the kind of thing where you need to have like a hand made sourdough to see the difference and supermarket bread will make supermarket toast no matter what you do with it.

However for those it does apply to, I cut my hair with clippers and it saves me a small fortune. In the past I used a local barber who was an Italian and a real professional BUT so much cheaper than a lot of these salon places. Mat was right that there are a lot of suspect 'hair cutters' out there. Note the absence of the word 'barber' as most of them? 👀

The idea seams to be to recreate the backing process used by professional backeries. There, a bowl of water is set in the oven with the bread during the first part of bakeing (modern bakers ovens have a steaming machanism build in for that purpose). This leads to the crust not forming imideately wich is important because otherwise the bread would form a crust whilst still expanding. breaking the crust again wich would make the bread look ugly. Also it helpes with bakeing the bread evenly since this way the outer parts are cooled by the water evaporating again so that you don't get a unbaked in the middle, burned on the outside result I sometimes moisten stale bread before troasting it in a normal toaster - workes well for me.

While I love this channel and really love his stories, I can see where those people are coming from. I've came across so many channels these days that try to dance around the topic and stretch their video for as long as possible for ad revenue, making the video repetitive and boring.

No one is going to buy this space toaster. The reason we are watching is because we love the presenter. I really get a lift just seeing something new is added to the channel. These videos are a respite from the frenetic pace of life and the hyperbolic KZread standards. He's not reviewing Graphics cards or CPU's where all that really matter are the numbers. These videos are like visiting a friend.

Thanx for the honest review. The lst thing I look for when replacing my old toaster oven ( that I've finally figured out how to get the best results w/each setting just before it breaks) is speed. Don't want on - off cooking, just give me really hot for a specific time or medium heat for small rewarming , you know... a toaster oven. Add to that a wee bit of durability & I'm sold. Oh yea, a end timer alarm that doesn't wake the neighbors or sound like a electronic dentist drill is a plus too.
