I get to drive this EV school bus today. Bus #44 a 2020 Blue Bird rear motor electric school bus.
My regular ride bus #10 is needed for an out of town field trip. So I get to play with an electric school bus for the afternoon.

I love the quiet the Bluebird Electric School Buses are.

The kids are quieter on the bus too.
I’m a school bus driver but those buses look like if they transport prisoners, instead of students

The prison buses in our county are much nicer than these electric buses. They are MCI 45 coaches. Got to drive them a couple of times way back when. These are great little runners when they are working.

@kal-el698 I like diesels too. I just happen to work for a school district in Southern California that has 18 electric school buses. I drive a CNG bus most of the time. When an E bus driver is doing an out of town trip, we trade buses and I drive an electric for the day.
I'm still waiting on the IC Buses

Can the electric buses go on field trips?

They are limited to about 25 miles one way.
Do you guys have a 43
@jonusle2937

We had a 43 about 1-2 years ago. It was a 1990's model Blue Bird All American RE diesel bus. It was replaced by an electric bus. Here at our district we reuse our bus numbers so one of the future IC electrics may have that number.
If this is an ev, it has no tank, instead what he was showing, was the battery charge level left before the next charge.

True, but these are my words. In my mind it's still a fuel tank gauge. I have been driving buses since 1985, it's a tank gauge to me.
Have you heard of a driver forgetting to Unplug before moving? Or, does the console alert the operator?

The system won't let you move a bus when it is plugged in. There is an alarm that goes off when you turn on the key and tells you the bus is charging. We train our drivers to unplug the bus before starting their pre-trip or entering the bus just in case. I have not heard of a case of a driver moving a bus that's plugged in. Our CNG buses have a sensor on the fuel door. When the door is not closed securely, the bus will not start.
Have you guys got the ic buses yet?

What is better in your experience, electric or diesel buses?

Diesel over electrics any day of the week for me. Unfortunately I work for a district in California that is slowly converting to an all electric fleet. I will retire before they turn 100% electric. My personal buses at home have alway been gas or diesel.
That electric school bus going to be here in Los Angeles before no more diesel/propane bus

I hear LA Unified is getting a bunch of them. It will be interesting times. Unfortunately electric buses have travel limitations and no underfloor storagr..

@@jonusle2937 yes exactly. This year my old bus driver told me about electric school bus more a lot time to check every single thing and check battery level… But in Los Angeles is really big county total is 88 cities, and long trip. I did graduating this year from high school, I had experience 15 years with school bus ride…. Sometime the take me between 1 to 2 hours each way, sometimes my old driver picking more students other school, that tape more time… But in LAUSD and another company going to order a electric buses, but they have many diesel and propane buses in the yard, mostly they going not to fit everything in the yard…. The main boss will figure out how to do it with everything

@@tallr264 with practice it takes less time to checkout an electric bus than a diesel or propane. There are air valves inside the bus that eliminate the need to go outside for part of the air brake test. No oil levels to check, you just look, not touch things under the hood. Checkout the this video I did on bus #49 kzread.info/dash/bejne/ln6l0KSOhZayZJs.htmlsi=jxXo88MrGwKmFGRn

@@jonusle2937 ah I see, almost every day I’m going to college I always see electric bus drive-by… The buzz color is all yellow with white roof top, but green rim on it. That’s very interesting color to me in LA
