I get hands on with a Pierce American Fire Truck

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Hello good people of the Internet,
Today we revisit America, where the super kind firefighters of Station 7 in Asheville, North Carolina, who on hearing that I had my own Fire Engine, asked if I'd like to like to have a look at theirs.
I thought that sounded like quite a bit of fun...
A video featuring:

I'm in an American volunteer fire department, most of our trucks are pretty old, but the funny thing is, our worst truck is our newest one, a 2007 GMC Pumper, we also have a 2000 International Tanker, 2000 Pierce Quantum Engine, and a 1997 Pierce Lance Aerial. I personally love our aerial, though. It makes our department special, seen as there are only 5 ladder trucks in our county. We're Forest Volunteer Fire Department, the others are Bushkill Volunteer Fire Department, Matamoras Volunteer Fire Department, Dingman's Ferry Volunteer Fire Department, and Hemlock Farms Volunteer Fire Department. Everyone in Pike County, PA respects us because we don't have a single paid fire department in the county, only volunteer. When we get a structure fire, it's usually pretty bad and we end up losing the building because it usually takes about 10 minutes to get enough people to the fire house and geared up to get the truck out, and then another 10 to 45 minutes to get to the call. It's a very rural area up here, so we all go there ready to see a fully engulfed house. Seeing the flashing lights of a fire engine, hearing the wail of the siren, and hearing the blast of the horn is the best part of someone's worst day, it shows them that people are coming to try and save all your belongings and memories inside that building, and they are eternally thankful for it.

Lots of firefighters I've spoken to prefer the older trucks. That's pretty amazing to all be volunteers. What an outstanding thing to be part of!

  • @Rebel9668

When I was a child I remember fire engines that would dwarf that one. They were called ladder trucks and had a separate steering wheel in the back as they were articulated. When I grew older we moved to a very rural area and the trucks I saw afterwards were much smaller and older, many dating back the the 30's and 40's. Our local VFD had as it's main pumper truck a Dodge built in the early 40's. Now of course they all modernized somewhat and have trucks similar to that one although in the closest town to me they kept their original pumper truck alongside their more modern counterparts and mostly use it for parades and funerals, etc. now. It's a 1936 Dodge with a hand rung bell and a hand cranked siren on it. It's pretty cool. I say their original pumper because before they bought it, the town still used a horse drawn fire wagon.

Worked on Fire/Rescue trucks in the eastern US for22 years before changing careers about 8 years ago. It’s still a mix of class8 chassis with a fire body on it and those built on a Spartan chassis like that one. The shiny inner door with reflective stripe is for safety. Working an Vehicle accident or using it alongside a narrow road means you need to operate it with the door open and has gotten folks hurt where they’ve hit the door on foot or in another vehicle. Very good overview of the fire engine and equipment!

Surprised it's got steel suspension with helper springs, thought it would be air suspension all round, and steel wheels, thought they d have polished alloys!! Great insite as to how the colonials do it across the pond,or was it an episode of pimp my ride!! Keep them coming, and stay safe.

When I was in the us, I had to wait for bus next to a fire station and started talking to them. We talked trucks and I showed them a picture of our 12,5t Mercedes 1222AF. Which was tiny compared to this Chicago engine. They guy started grinning and asked: "How big of a crew can it fit?" When a told him it's ment to fit nine but we already did 12 his mouth couldn't stay shut. The outward size doesn't really matter. Especially not here in Europe. I know a lot of departments having atvs (with trailers) to be able to get everywhere. Furthermore, I know that many places have troubles getting into forests and so on with their big and heavy engines whilst our old one is unstoppable. And with the "custom chassis" thing. I really don't know. Every methode of doing it has its advantages and the off the shelve chassis is just cheaper and the truck part is probably more refined. Adding up to it, magirus for example receive mist trucks just as chassis and also built them up from there but with similarly stoked Cab. on our mercedes, they just cut of the back wall and out another piece in it - simple dies the trick. However, I also know of places that wanted to order mercedes chassis, but it just couldn't be done because mercedes add blue tank was in a horrible spot and they couldn't fit all their stuff. Furthermore, because here every village has its own volunteer fire department they want to keep the cost of engines down so they buy stuff like VW caddys and put a portable pump and some equipment in the back. Or if your village is a bit bigger, you get one of those tiny Iveco Transit style trucks that carries a crew of four, 450l of water or so, a portable pump etc. They look hideous, but the worst part is: you can't off-road them. A your shed burns. What's that? It's standing on a field. Na mate can't do. Our truck can't get there. I'm not even sure if it's better than what they used to do: they put those portable pumps and trailers and pulled them with tractors. At least they could get everywhere. But enough of that rant. Fire trucks are great as long as they're big, red and unstoppable and I wouldn't trade our old engines for a new one...

I was just happy to have a look over it. Pretty much all firefighters I've spoken to have always much favoured trucks like Dennis which were built to be fire engines rather than conversion jobs. It never occurred to me how useless those things would be off road either..

An IVECO Daily 4x2 is absolutely no offroad vehicle, but the 4x4 is a good one. Fire departments over here in Europe are oftentimes starved by regulations to get funding limiting size and engine power etc, only factory fire brigades paying with their own money can buy real big sized fire engines the small volunteer ones can only dream of. Fire trucks in Europe oftentimes (especially the older ones from Magirus-Deutz for example) work for 30-40 and more years, 10 or 20 years is absolutely nothing in terms of age.

One of the local townships does a "Touch-A-Truck" event, where parents can bring their kids to climb all over firetrucks, plow trucks, police vehicles, etc. It's pretty neat. When I was a kid, they also had a trailer that you could crawl through, that would simulate being in a building that was on fire. You started at the front of the trailer, and "escaped" out of the back :) I'm not sure if they still do that or not.

It would be difficult to do a fully objective comparison between a US and a UK/European fire truck. Each is tailored to suit very different road sizes and building construction. US trucks could be lighter, more compact and nimble but their is no necessity. A real problem that I with the US lack of standardisation and fragmentation of provision. They are very reliant on volunteer fire fighters who often have to use seriously old kit. A state wide fire service is the optimum solution.

The 80 Class that ran on Northern Ireland Railways was decommissioned after use since the 70s back in 2015, used to hear them miles away, and was fortunate to get on one of the last passenger services. kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6B2xrVxkrO6qaw.html - that was one of the last ones, used as a sandite train in its last days (not my video btw). Just thought in terms of engine sounds, it was a bit unique - not really a looker, but definitely sounded cool. 2 were rescued and are being restored at least. The States always does things big, powerful, and and that early design, inspired from the 30s or something, is just awesome! Just a pity the automotive industry dealt such a huge blow to rail in America, I'm sure it would have had such a selection of classics from the 80s etc!
