In this week's repair and restoration video, I restore and refinish a corner table I rescued from the trash one evening while on the way home from the hardware store. It is a more modern piece compared to what you usually see on this channel and it isn't the best quality piece but it turned out really nice in the end.
The table was dirty and sticky but overall in okay condition. All it needed was a good cleaning, scraping, sanding, staining, and refinishing with an oil and wax finish.

    I’m so glad to see pieces like this get saved from the landfill. It might not be Fine Furniture, but it’s solid wood, and look how well it cleaned up! I would put that in my house, it looks 10 times better than before and a better look than when it was new.

    The table looks better than it probably did when it was brand new. You gave it depth and warmth that it didn't have before. Proof you can restore newer, cheaper pieces and make them really nice!

    Thanks! It was a ton of scraping for sure. I only showed y'all a little of it. But it is better than using stripper. I hate using stripper. Stripper is the worst. Messy and stinky. Have I mentioned that I do not like using stripper? 🙂✌🏽

    There was a large Bombay Company store in Peabody MA back in the day that stocked mostly fake antiques and repros made in Asia. It was a fun place. I still have two steel and marble ice cream parlor tables which I use as end tables in my bedroom.

    Lighter edges would have looked nice but they had a strange plastic-like trim that didn't stain well and looked fake. I had to sand it off and stain to match the top to blend it in to look natural. Thanks!

  • @Restorology

    @Restorology

    9 ай бұрын

    Thanks! I cannot remember the turning speed of the lathe that I use when simply sanding pieces. I will have to go look it up and get back with you on that. It's a slow speed though. The big thing I have to remember though when using the lathe to sand is to make sure I do not put scratch marks in the wood as it turns. I just turn to get the heavy finish off and then finish sanding with strokes by hand along the wood grain to remove marks from turning.

  • @Restorology

    @Restorology

    I hate using stripper. It's stinky, messy, environmentally unfriendly, and not safe (but mostly because I am bad about using PPE). I try only to use it when scraping or sanding is not enough. I really, really hate using stripper and only use it when nothing else works. I've got a couple of projects in the queue for which I will need stripper so stay tuned! ✌🏽

    I am not sure I'd call it total junk but it definitely won't be a new family heirloom to pass on. I didn't stain the underside because it wasn't stained to begin with...however, I did seal the wood underneath to prevent further damage. Thanks for the honest feedback!! ✌🏽
