My first Toad Suck Daze was in 1983 when it was still out at the river. Since 1998 I’ve lived within walking distance of downtown so parking is not an issue, I can walk off some of the funnel cake calories by walking uptown instead of driving. And I can hear the music from my living room, so there is no need to walk home after dark. 😊🐸

Last time I was camped at McDill Point, I was all alone on a very windy night. As I was sitting by my tent looking back up the trail towards the plane crash site, I saw what looked like a couple of headlamps coming down the trail. I thought, "Great. I will have some company for the night." No one ever showed up, and the lights stopped after a few minutes. The direction I was looking could not have been toward a town, so there is no explanation for it. Lights from civilization are to the west. I was looking north. Also, it was not the right season for fireflies. Very creepy.

At McDill Point, the southern overlook, on days with a breeze, Eagles, Hawks, and Buzzards will circle to use the updrafts. I have had them pass less than 20 feet above my head. There is also a campsite on the western overlook where you can look over the Forest and see the lights of Talladega City and the Talladega NASCAR racetrack if the lights are on. BCM

When I was hiking a section of the AZT, I was so tired but no place to camp so I said "first doable spot I find I'm pitching my tent." It was on a slight slope, not too bad but I thought, "I bet there's a perfect spot not far." Sure enough, the next morning, I passed the best spot 😢 You just never know and when you're that tired you don't want to chance it. I feel your pain!

Great views on that section of trail. And crazy plane crash, too! Yikes! Still, "feels good to be back in the South". Congrats on hitting the 100 mile mark. Beautiful waterfalls. When you're tired just about any campsite will do.

I turned on my Merlin app and it said that weird bird was a Yellow-breasted Chat! The birds at the start of your video were a Red-eyed Vireo and an Ovenbird. Also, there was an Indigo Bunting in with the weird bird call. Happy hiking.

Hey Kelly, that one campsite checked off all the boxes, you could sit there and wonder if anyone survived, it would brek up the monotany of sitting at camp. morbid I know

That plane crash site was from a crash in 1972. People will hike up just to see the wreckage. You can can camp as well it says. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Looks like you missed the best view at McDill. When you walk through the camping area there are two trails that split. The one that goes to the right has a better open view than the one to the left. That was the place of my first overnight hike and stayed in my hammock. The only person out there!

@@kellyhays23 There is also another plane crash about 13 miles or south of there just off the Pinhoti. Happy hiking. Love the videos! Especially cool to see your first several days on the Pinhoti since I’ve hiked most of those areas.
