I always had the goal to forge my own hooks since before I started turning - so here's my first one!
I didn't get footage of most of the forging and grinding, as it was my first try and I wanted to get it right. You will be able to see how much I've progressed in my turning since the last episode!
For regular updates you can follow me on instragram @littlebear_sloyd
The lathe hooks that I'm comparing my own effort to in this video were made for me by Liam Culbertson, you can find his work on instagram @liam_culbertson
Hope you enjoy the video, leave a comment if you have any questions!

There is something mesmerizing about turning, but your pole-lathe turning is at a whole new level :)

Oi, Buddy... At first glance I thought I saw 1.4 mill subs, I was shocked to see the K. Keep doing what you're doing man, it's high quality gear.

I think maybe the amount of crank you have put in your new tool could be the problem. As you get deeper into the bowl you have more 'lever effect' which tends to turn the tool in to the wood causing a catch. My first tools I made from 16mm tool steel which seems a bit heavy but I like that. I also have a double edge tool which I really like, but it's only 6mm wide which might reduce the catching on the return. The bowl turned out nice, like the big handle.

I ended up reforging that tool into something different since then, and I've had better luck making hooks since. If you watch my newer forging video you'll see! Thanks for the helpful comment anyway ☺️
