It’s possible Emily had a biphasic sleep pattern, lots of people do and it used to be a lot more common :) I doubt she set an alarm in the middle of the night, she just woke up naturally and took advantage of the quiet. I do it often.
Emily D would wake with ideas is also a reason she would get up and write at the witching hour Not necessarily waking as planned She would wake with excitement to put down on paper her thoughts

It would be so cool if you did a whole series on other author’s writing routines, like Virginia Woolf or Charles Dickens! Loved this one! ❤

I found out during a victorian writing class that Dickens has insomnia, so he'd go for walks around the city late at night, which gave him inspiration for his works. I wanted to try that but my campus scares me at night lol

I was just listening to an interview with Donna Tartt yesterday where she was talking about her writing routine, and was thinking I should try it myself! I’m so excited to watch this video! I think it’s a great way to become close to an author- working at the same time of day as them, kind of putting yourself in their shoes and daily habits. Even if it doesn’t end up working out as a personal long term habit, it still seems like such a fun way to get to know a writer, and to think of them actually sitting at their desk at 2am and working on the very words that we get to read now!!

I’m always honest when it comes to KZread- but this is sooooooo the best channel on KZread. I binge watch old videos and have a playlist of the book related ones. Ruby is amazing. Such a kind soul, and always happy to give great book recommendations (if you saw my home library, most of them are thanks to Ruby )

last year i did a whole project about dickinson for uni, and yes, she was very reclusive, but emily loved spending her time with ppl very close to her (especially lavinia, her sister)
One of my favourite songs by my favourite artist “David Sylvian” is titled “Emily Dickinson” from the album “Manafon”. Whenever I hear anything about her now, I just think of the song and how beautiful it is. I highly recommend the album to any book lovers or people that enjoy silence as it is so quiet and calm.
i love ruby’s creativity ❤
thank you sm for this video, ruby! ur channel brings so much joy and comfort 🤍
So happy you’ve uploaded a new video! Perfect start of the weekend❤️
This video reminds me of the youtuber Christy Anne Jones, she also makes videos following other authors writing routine and it's really insightful
out of any channel on all of youtube urs brings be the most peace. thank u ruby
Ruby you always put me to shame with your knowledge but encourages me to read more of past writers as I’m so interested in History. Back in school I was never interested (teacher was very boring and his voice bored me) having someone like you to listen to, I would definitely listen. Now I am older I would of loved to of studied literature as I love reading now but back then also was never interested in a book. How growing older changes you. Never too late I suppose. Thank you for your great history lessons x
love this video!! and omg, I've just started a notebook for pressed flowers and leaves from my daily walks! I've picked my first leaf for the notebook a few days ago and pressed it :)
Another engaging video, Ruby; it seems you never exhaust creative ways to encourage people. I’m interested in anything related to Emily Dickinson because, like you, she is my favorite poet. I am almost finished with Villette, and it’s awesome. Charlotte Bronte reaches me through Lucy Snowe-almost as if she knew me-the book progressively gets better and better. I’m a letter writer, too, and if people think email can substitute for a hand-written missive, I say forsooth!
Just loved this video in particular; I´m about to read complete poems of Emily! Thanks, Ruby ; )
Watching Ruby for around two years now and I can say I’m more productive now n I also read more than I used too and I appreciate nature more Thank you Ruby for ur great content ❤️❤️

Hi Ruby, I just wanted to say that I really love your Channel. You make such creative and inspiring videos. Dickinson is one of my favourite poets too and these vlogs in which you dive into her lifestyle, bring me so much joy! I’m currently preparing for my finals and taking a quick break by watching this channel really helps to unwind. Congratulations with getting into Oxford. I’m so happy for you! I wake up at 2:55am every day. Have done for nearly 14 years. My husband needs medication then, so I get up to do that for him(he’s got a tremor so he can’t do it) some days I’d like to hide under my pillow to 5am - that’s much more human an hour to wake 🙂

hi ruby! id love to hear more about your writing process when you make poems. as a beginning writer im looking for some tips, how to get inspiration, etc.
I love writing outside on my notebook. Sometimes I’ll take my laptop or iPad with keyboard too. There is a spot on the back porch that calls to me often when it’s warmer outside. Another great Video!
I love this!!
Great video! Would love a video with some writing/story-planning tips! :)
Lovely video Ruby! Amazing!

Absolutely loved this!! As a 14 year old aspiring writer, I found this video so interesting and enjoyable! Keep up the great work, you're always inspiring me
I miss you and your interesting videos, especially your vlogs
A Bird came down the walk by her is one of my favourites about birds.
I binged watched Dickinson (the apple plus show) during the holidays and it really inspired me to get back to writing. I've had writers block for months on end and it's KILLING me lol. I started doing research on her after I finished the show so I might try this eventually:)

I really enjoy watching your videos. Your framing is great! And also you choose a great filter for videos. I’m really eager to know which filter you choose for your beautiful videos?👌
You are so inspiring!
"Split sleep" was very common before the industrial age. Instead of having a block of 8 hours they would have a nap of about 4 hours wake for musing in the wee hours followed by another 3 to 4 sleep.
Hi Ruby, love your videos, as always thank you for sharing your joys and passions with us! I had a question, what is that pencil you are using to write letters? It is so nice and rich in shade.
Brilliant video, Ruby! You know, I go to bed at 4 am every day, but I'm no Emily Dickinson. Well, at 2 am even some dogs are sleeping. I've just realised how much I like PJs! lol
Thanks Ruby nice Video concept:) I highly recommend the Apple TV+ series „Dickinson“, in my opinion the tone of the series catches Emily Dickinsons spirit very fittingly
Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Why is she your favourite? I really enjoy your videos! Thank you for posting.
I used to love writing when I was younger and I still do like writing, I just never do it. I have not done it in years (only my thoughts, not stories). I really wish I could start writing but I never came up with ideas or I don't know how to start or end a story. I feel like I don't have enough imagination or just feel awkward when writing anything. I'm also a kind of a perfectionist which I guess is not the best when you just starting to write something... It would be great if you could do a video about this subject on how you write your own stories, writing tips, motivation etc. It would be so fun and interesting!
I love when you do these "Day In The Life" videos, walking through their routine and seeing what it's like. When you poured the water out of the window, I half-expected to hear "RUBY!!" as you doused your dad standing underneath. 😄
Dear Ruby, you are a true ins2for my students in English, thank you for sharing! Greetings from Germany :)

I bet you slept amazing after the 2am writing session though! Thats wild that there is pretty much only 1 photo of her in existence. I didnt know that.
I was just thinking ... Isn't being very tired at 2am a distraction itself? ... Maybe Dickinson went to bed at 8-9pm, so she was okay at 2am.
Instead of finding a notebook I'd love to see you make your own scrapbook, it could be that you use premade binder or cover but there's something about the decisions of paper choice that I think for someone like yourself would find valuable.
13:05 Here lamps are white like snowdrops in the grass; The town is like a churchyard, all so still And grey now night is here; nor will Another torn red sunset come to pass. It's such a beautiful poem.✨
If she woke up at 2 am, what time did she go to bed? I live in Massachusetts and am enjoying the videos from your trip. “Indian” in terms of US historical recipes means corn or cornmeal. So it would have been a rye and cornmeal bread. I’ve bought that at bakeries here and it’s very good. If you don’t want to bake, a dessert that Dickinson certainly would have had is “Indian” pudding, which is cornmeal slow cooked in milk and sweetened with molasses. It ends up like a smoother textured oatmeal. Wonderful on a chilly night.
Ah Emily! Always have been fond of her. p.s. I go to Mount Holyoke College. It is such an ethereal place.
I love the new phrase at the end of the video, but it feels like the end of an era, like when ruby stopped having a forelock
i drink tea all the time ruby. tea is very good. your very amazing :)
Ruby do you remember the video you made when you were in Pompeii? You are wearing this wide-brimmed straw hat. Where did you get it or what brand it is it? I would appreciate it so much; i love that hat!
Women's clothing actually had more pockets in the late 1800s, sorry to burst your bubble but it was NOT 'certainly the case', they did not have the same issues with pockets as we do today- most women made their own clothes (apart from the obscenely wealthy who could afford for other people to make them, and the Americans who never really bothered to learn*) and it was seen as a cardinal sin to not put pockets into your clothing. If you ever get the chance to see an extant garment from any Victorian period you'll find that there's at least one pocket hidden away in a side seam somewhere. In a late Victorian walking skirt pockets were so big you could fit multiple books in them- I have made a reproduction one with a pattern devised from an extant garment and I can fit 2-3 hardback books in there! An interesting line of research if you have a spare hour or two! (*my comment on the Americans not being bothered to learn is taken from the introduction to the book 'Authentic Victorian Dressmaking Techniques', the lack of American knowledge in dressmaking and sewing prompted the book to be written to try and educate women in the USA on how to sew their own clothes as opposed to running to the dressmaker and paying through the nose for someone else to do it for them.)
@Moss-and-Bees

Was about to say that! When she mentioned that Emily's dress had pockets I was like “yeah that's average”
Another great video. Just a note to others though, it is illegal to pick snowdrops unless you either grow them yourself or have permission from the owner. Wild snowdrops are not allowed to be picked x

✨Ruby would you do a video on Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea. Pretty please. And if you do, please make it at least a half hour long! Hugs! ✨
I want to be like you always when I started to watching you.
I know historically people did what is called ‘biphasic’ sleeping, where most people would customarily sleep in two chunks with a waking gap between.
Dear Ruby, you have mentioned lots of significant poets names and I do believe they wrote beautifully too. I wonder what your opinion is regarding Mevlana Jalal Uddin Rumi's work.
It does not depend on when and where whether you can write something wonderful or not. It requires a true passion for something in order to write something worth reading, but not copying anyone If one doesn't really have any true passion for anything, it will be likely that one won't ever be able to write anything great for the entire life It can be said that writing fictional things is one of the easiest things to do because all what you need is a wild imagination, which almost every human has, and a true passion for something, such as the beautiful & the romantic. It is the most boring thing to do to copy someone's style, in all forms of art, including writing poems and novels Dickinson's routine is not very healthy, anyway.
Nobody is one of my favourite poems by Emily Dickinson it resonates when the black dog hits
Hey Ruby, I noticed that you took my advice about the title card. This video had wonderful flow, and great evidence of research. Excellent examples of growth In your video style, keep going 👍👍
when u publish a book can u make sure it gets to canada? I am really interested in your work!:)
You are good in painting
Because I live right above a pub in the city, I sometimes get insomnia from the loud mics and thumping music through the walls till 2 to 3 am. Maybe instead of getting angry and upset, I can try writing poems at that hour to digest those emotions…
Have you ever tried to build and maintain a terrarium?

I think that Emily Dickinson's routine made it easier for her to wake up at 2 am in the night to write. (Because with time she got used to it.)

Is it possible that she was suffering from insomnia and the only thing that she could think of for not wasting time staring at the ceiling, was writing at 2 am? I recently came across an article by I honestly don't remember who, which was saying how many creative souls suffer from insomnia in the past and it was very common to go to bed early. For this reason after a couple of hours, people would wake up and find ways to use their time.
I love you ruby🇹🇷❤
